1944

January 1944
            1 – Went to Plant for 1 hour & to church to sort papers. Wayne's here for dinner. Mrs. Harbert over in evening. Quiet New Years.
            2 – Went to Church. Ate dinner at home. Wayne took us out to Dee's this p.m. Aunt Orah not so well. Went to Church to hear Bill Ishie preach first sermon. Very good. Still warm (30º).
            3 – Heavy frost this morning, but warm in day.
            4 – Another heavy frost. Temp. over 40. Went to class at H.S.
            5 – Raining & snowing today, but warm. Colder tonight. Stayed home.
            7 – Had class at H.S. tonight.
            8 – Nancy's birthday. Went to Harbert's for small party. Gave her sewing kit.
            9 – Went to Church.
            13 – Farrell came home today.
            14 – Had class at H.S. tonight.
            15 – Went out to Mother's. Wayne drove. Donna went too. First time in her new home in Claypool. Found her well & happy. Weather was fine.
            16 – Chris came home. Had nice dinner. Went to Devoy's & Tola's & home late. Dean Fauher married there today. Called to see him at Steeles.
            17 – To Presbyterian Church to leadership training class.
            18 – To leadership training class tonight.
            19 – Mr. Stolte hurt in auto accident in South Chicago. Both cars smashed. Went with Mrs. Stolte to see him. Has broken arm & cuts. Not serious.
            20 – Farrell came home tonight. Donna quit her job at United Air Lines.
            21 – Farrell & Donna went to Crown Point to apply for license. Assisted them thru Mr. Granger.
            22 – Went to office, first Sat. on 44-hr. week. Had to see about flowers, cake, printing, washing car etc.
            23 – Went to Church. The whole Milne family there. To Nancy's for dinner. Donna's last Sunday at home.
            24 – Went to Training Class at Presbyterian Church. Busy week ahead. Donna busy planning wedding.
            25 – Went to Presbyterian Church to Training Class. Donna went to Crown Point to get license.
            26 – Went to Income Class, also to Church for Donna's rehearsal. Bob Webbs & Bake are to be ushers. Temp 62 degrees. Warmest day on record. Like summer.   
            27 – Donna & Farrell married tonight at Church. Nice wedding & lovely bride. Had reception at house. Several here, Aunt Mabel, Cousin Gertie, Etta & families. Donna & Farrell left at 11:30 for Palmer House. Wayne & Nancy took them.



            28 – Donna called from Palmer House. They are leaving for Madison at 6:30.
            29 – Mrs. Fallowes died suddenly this morn on way to hospital. First Sat. of 44 hr. week at office. Took David to first circus at Civic Center. Had fun.
            30 – Went to Church. Kids here for dinner. Went to see Marj & stopped at Fallowes this evening. Warmest January in 60 years. No snow or zero weather.
            31 – Took supper to Fallowes tonight & pie to Marjorie. Went to hear Kathryn Garten review "The Promise" at Church. Went to see Mrs. Fallowes at Burns Chapel.

February 1944
            1 – Mrs. Fallowes buried today. Mother furnished dinner for them. We went to Stolte's tonight.
            2 – Went to Income Tax class.
            3 – Sunday School Board Meeting at Jim Crary's. Good meeting.
            5 – Went to office.
            6 – Went to Aunt Mabel's with Bake & family. Left Hammond at 8:00. Went to church at Evanston. Had nice time & dinner. Weather fine.
            7 – Had birthday party at Wayne's. Eva went to Sunday School Party.
            8 – Was to Wayne's for supper. David & I went over to Stolte's awhile. Eva & Nancy to WSCS meeting [Women's Society of Christian Service].
            9 – Mr. Gulick & I went to lunch with Johnson & Bowman at Woodmar. Went to income tax class tonight.
            10 – Mr. Gulick & I ate lunch at Stolte's. He left for New York. He finished in less than 2 months. Snowed in night nearly 6-8 inches. First real snow of year.
            11 – Snowing hard today, not so cold. Had party on Mary Ellen at Smidts [Phil Smidts restaurant], she is leaving for Waves. 34 present. Took Mr. Stolte. Nice party.
            12 – 1 below this morning. Steam off at office. Had to send folks home. I stayed thru. Donna & Farrell came home today from Madison. Went to see Lassie Come Home & to Wayne's after. Kids there too.
            13 – Below zero this morning. Warming up. Went to Church. Donna & Farrell stayed in bed.
            14 – Farrell went to Chicago to make reservations. Went over to Wayne's in evening. Donna coming down with sore throat.
            15 – Farrell took Donna to Dr., said she had tonsillitis.
            16 – Wayne's & kids here for supper. Had ham. I had to go to Income Tax class.
            17 – Went to meeting at Church. Donna pretty sick.
            18 – Donna feeling rotten. Farrell & I went to Calumet to see "Flight Command."
            19 – Went to office. Donna running a fever. Dr. Row came to see her. Throat still full of sores.
            20 – Went to Church. Had dinner at home. Donna some better this p.m., ate some egg nog & malted milk.
            21 – Eva coming down with grippe & cold. Feels bad.
            22 – Got my own breakfast. Eva still feeling punk. Donna lots better.
            23 – Donna out for first time. They were at Wayne's all day & to his folks for supper. We had Wayne's in for supper.
            24 – Farrell's furlough ended. Left tonight for Tacoma, Washington. Donna feeling better. Farrell's folks took him to station.
            25 – Went out to Bake's this evening. Showed pictures. Wayne's & Donna there.
            26 – Temp. 62, new record. Went to see Hammond High beat Gary Edison (50-43), Washington beat Clark 34-28. Hammond won Sectional from Washington 32-26. Upset. Had car washed.
            27 – Went to Church. Ate at home with Donna.

March 1944
            1 – Eva & Donna went to Mishawaka on bus.
            3 – Went to Wayne's for supper. Snowed tonight. Colder.
            4 – Hammond lost Regional. La Porte beat Mt. Ayr. Emerson beat Hammond High & La Porte beat Emerson at night. I went to Mishawaka on South Shore. Lots of snow there.
            5 – Had nice visit at Chris's. Came home on South Shore. Ruth Marie was on train coming home.
            6 – Went to Church to hear Dr. Smith lecture on The Old National Trail. Helping Wayne get his mangler [Possibly the wringer part of a washing machine].
            7 – Went to see Dr. Johns about headache I have had for 3 weeks. Can't find anything wrong.
            8 – Had Fallowes over for supper. Helped him on Income Tax. We played carroms.
            10 – Fallowes & I went to Stoltes to play Pinochle. Had nice evening. Still got headache.
            11 – Eva & Donna went to Mother's with Marj. Culver defeated Converse in Semi Finals. La Porte beat Frankfort. La Porte won from Culver in evening 24-23. Rousing games. Went to see Dr. Smith about my eye & headache.
            12 – Went to church and Sunday School. Ate dinner at Wayne's. Went to Baptist Church in p.m. & made two calls with Clark. Folks came home early.
            13 – Went to Baptist Church supper. Did not go out. Folks at Wayne's.
            14 – Went to Church supper. Came home with slight headache. Went to Smith for recheck on eyes. Headache some better.
            15 – Had Wayne's over for Birthday Supper. Donna 21, Wayne 27. We must be getting old.
            16 – Went to Chicago to have teeth xrayed. Cost $2.50. They were all ok. See March 25th [don't know what that refers to].
            17 – Eva & I went to Gary to hear E. Stanley Jones for first time [Methodist missionary and theologian, sometimes considered the "Billy Graham of India"]. We was wonderful.
            18 – State finals – Kokomo beat Anderson 30-26. Evansville beat La Porte 41-38. Evansville beat Kokomo 39-35 in close game. Was at Wayne's tonight.
            19 – Went to Church. Had dinner at home. Wayne's & Harberts over for lunch.
            20 – Went to Chicago to xray teeth, bought suit at Richmans & Dobbs, hat at Baskins $12.50. Tan suit $29.50.
            22 – Had 6 skull pictures taken today. Cost $15.00.
            23 – Had Sunday School Board meeting at Church tonight.
            24 – Like spring today, 65º. Xray of skull clear. Can't find cause of headaches. Farrell came out between trains today. Looks good. Was at Wayne's for supper.
            25 – Colder today with a heavy wet snow, almost a blizzard. Was at Wayne's for supper. Got suit from Richmans today $29.50, light tan diagonal.
            26 – Went to Church. Kids here for dinner. Having a regular blizzard with thunderstorm. Temp about 30. Farrell called today.
            27 – Went to see picture, "On Sacred Soil" at Church. Travelogue by Stephen Haboush. Very good.
            30 – Mamie came today on South Shore. First visit to see us alone. Snowed again today. [Mamie was Eva's sister, 2 years older, never married.]
            31 – Went out to Wayne's for supper tonight.

April 1944
            1 – Mother got new hat – Tan $7.98. Went to see Marg. & Bob. Marg. not home.
            2 – Went to Church. Kids all here for dinner. Mamie went home on South Shore. Had vesper service today, baptism & communion.
            6 – Fred Walker from the Church died suddenly today of heart attack.
            7 – Good Friday. Office closed at noon. Went to 2-hr. service. Eva was fitted for glasses. Bifocal - $25.00. Went to see Walker.
            8 – Went to Walkers funeral at Church. Went to Wayne's this evening.
            9 – Easter Sunday. Went to Sunrise services. Dr. Lewis preached. Went to our regular service. Raining all day. Home alone for dinner.
            10 – Went to Wayne's tonight. Got Duo Kodak 120 $65.00 with accessories. Second hand. Rained all night.
            11 – Had Gas Incinerator installed today $69.50. Still cold & windy, also raining.
            13 – Farrell arrived about 4:30 a.m. from Camp Knox, on a 10-day furlough.
            15 – Went shopping this a.m., got zipper fixed on grip. Ate lunch in town & left for Mother's about 1:00. First trip in DeSoto since rationing. Mother surprised & ok.
            16 – Tola, Chris & Devoy's at Mother's for dinner. Nice dinner. Cool weather.
            17 – Nice day. Went to Tola's for supper. Cleaned chromium on car & washed it.
            18 – Cloudy. Waxed car today. Cool. To Tola's again for supper. Had home cured ham.
            19 – First warm day. Went to Webster Lake to see Dr. Smith & family. He was fishing & feeling good. At Tola's again for supper. Devoy's there also. Showed pictures.
            20 – Stayed home today. Rained again.
            21 – Tola's in for dinner & Earl & I went to Auction sale. Went to Devoy's for supper.
            22 – Devoy got cinders for his lane. We went to Mishawaka, took Tola & Mother. Rained all the way. Every one ok.
            23 – Wayne's, Donna & Farrell came out from Hammond. Had good dinner & every one enjoyed day. Folks all liked Farrell. We got back to Earl's about 7:00.
            24 – Rained again. Devoy hauled cinders.
            25 – Tola & Earl in for dinner. We left for home about 1:00. Stopped to see Doris' new baby. She is cute. Arrived home about 4 o'clock.
            26 – Went back to work after 10-day leave. Feeling some better. Farrell left tonight for Sacramento.
            28 – Uncle Walt called this evening. Eva not feeling well.
            30 – Went to Church. Ate fried chicken at home.

May 1944
            2 – Planted first garden, 2 rows peas & row of onions, radishes & lettuce.
            4 – Went out to Wayne's.
            5 – Coldest May 5th of record, Temp. 34. Wayne & Nancy went to Marine Dining Room. I went to Foreman's Dinner at Woodmar.
            6 – Washed basement hallway. Bought new 6 "stepladder" $4.50. Went to see Bob Leas' baby.
            7 – Still cool. Went to church & to Wayne's for dinner. Had ad in paper to sell sax & camera. [This reminds me of my dad telling about Lester playing "It's 3 o'clock in the Morning" on the saxophone and keeping him awake trying to hit the high note.]
            8 – Wrens arrived today. Had two new nests up.
            10 – Went to Bowling & AAA Dinner at Lundgrens.
            11 – First real warm day. Temp. 84º.
            12 – Still warmer. 86º. Donna went to Chicago for reservation. Went to Wayne's for supper.
            13 – Donna left this a.m. for Sacramento on N.W. to see Farrell. Forest Layman passed away at 3 a.m., blood clot.
            14 – Mothers Day, went to Church. Over to Harbert's for dinner. Sold Mercury camera to Sailor for $25.00. Was to Leas' to see Bob, also went to funeral parlor & to Church service.
            15 – Went to Layman's services today. Warm again, about 88.
            16 – Planted 1 lb. onion sets, more radishes, carrots, 1 row onion seeds, 1 row beets, spinach & chard, 1 row green beans. Eva went to shower on Mary Porter. Donna arrived safe at Sacramento.
            18 – Went to Chicago to Officers Club. Cool today.
            19 – Cut lawn. Cool today.
            20 – Washed car & planted 2 rows of Hybrid sweet corn. Warmer today.
            21 – Went to church, and to Teibels for chicken dinner. Rained off & on all day. Stayed home in evening.
            22 – Stayed home in evening. Rained. Fixed box to send Donna.
            23 – Still raining. Wayne & I planted 13 John Bar & 7 Battimaons tomatoes & 23 cabbage plants. We were at Wayne's for supper. Mom cleaned living room today.
            24 – Rained again today so I stayed home from garden & helped Mom scrub & wax floors. She cleaned dining room today.
            25 – Had a real heavy rain today almost a cloud-burst. Lots of basements were flooded. Had Sunday School Board meeting tonight.
            26 – Gordon & Kay came today for supper & stayed all night. Warm 89. Third hottest day since Aug. 31st. Wayne's here also. Had good time. Gordon looks good.
            27 – Wayne & I planted 2 rows Honeyrocks, 1 row Mr. Cox seed, 1 row watermelon, 2 rows two kinds of cucumbers & 6 Rutger & 12 Marlok tomatoes. Worked & hoed entire garden. Went to Pauline F. wedding. Ate supper at Brakos.
            28 – Went to church. Ate warmed over dinner at home. Went to see Lin Griffith & to Mary Porter's wedding. It was real nice. Warm today, about 80. Had first green onions.
            29 – Went out home today. Got gas from Devoy & Virgene. She & Lewie Jr. were with us. Arrived there about 10 p.m. Got Grandma out of bed.
            30 – Decoration Day. Ate good dinner at Devoy's. Saw Chas. & Bertha Brooks. Warm. Got home about 6 p.m. Rained on the way home.
            31 – Big rain storm again today. Cut lawn & spaded flower bed.

June 1944
            1 – Temp. about 90. Rained hard today. Water came in Wayne's basement. Drove out to Griffith, saw Kistlers.
            2 – Warm about 92. Went to garden, planted 2 rows of Lima Golden Bantam, also row of Lima & wax beans. Bro't home first radishes.
            3 – Warm today about 93. Set out 50 Nancy Hall Sweet Potatoes & 2 Beefsteak tomatoes. Cultivated some in evening. Moved to basement, first time.
            4 – Went to church. Warm. Ate dinner in basement. Went to Harbert's. Picked up Wallace Anderson at Johnson's. He is at Great Lakes.
            5 – Mother went to Gary to Muriel's graduation. I spaded flower garden & planted dahlias, glads & seeds.
            6 – D-Day. Allies landed on shore of Normandy, France. Successful so far. Went to see "Memphis Belle."
            7 – Farrell's Birthday (23). Sent him $5.00. Went to Wayne's. Replanted muskmelons & planted row of turnips & cabbage, also beets & carrots. Temp. dropped.
            8 – Cut lawn tonight. Cooler. Mom finished scrubbing rugs in basement. Winds up housecleaning.
            9 – Rained again today. We went to Calumet to see "Destination Tokyo." (4 hour show)
            10 – Still cool (65). Had gas on about 2 hours. Set out 1 dozen Ponderosa tomatoes & ½ dozen peppers. Planted acorn & suceby squash. At Wayne's for supper.
            11 – Student Day at church. Ate at home. Tena & Dan dropped in on us. Donna wired that she was leaving Sacramento at 11:35 p.m.
            12 – Raining again. Went out to Agnes to see Uncle Dock & Aunt Orah. They are not so good. Nancy & Wayne went with us. Temp 88 again.
            13 – Wayne's here for supper. Went to see Wes Dyer in evening. Warm.
            14 – Warm & rained again. Donna due home this morning. Train never came in. Still in Nebraska on account of floods. Nancy & kids here for supper. Donna wired, from Elm Creek, Nebraska.
            15 – Donna still on way. We went to Quarterly Conference supper and to Baptist Church to organ recital by Marj. Conaway. Very warm evening.
            16 – Went to Chicago at 3:30 a.m. to meet Donna. Train came in at 8:50, 48 hours late. She was tired & hungry. Still warm. Went to Wayne's for supper & worked some in garden. Had icicle radishes.
            17 – Warm again. Had rain storm in morning. Temp. reached 93 in day. We ate up town in evening & went to show. Donna too, saw "Bridge of San Luis Ray." Home at 12 o'clock. Still warm.
            18 – Went to church. Ate in our basement. Very warm. About 94 or more. Fathers day, so stayed at home all day. Cooled off in basement. Big storm tonight.
            19 – Turned cool. Rained a little. Cut lawn. Went to Wayne's for supper.
            20 – Still cool. Trimmed around walks & flower beds, and trees.
            21 – Went to garden. Planted 2 rows of corn also pole beans. Cultivated small garden stuff & fertilized tomatoes.
            22 – Warmer again. Donna & I went shopping & sorted Sunday School papers.
            23 – Diane's 1st Birthday. Was there in evening. Folks went to Violet's recital. I planted porch boxes & petunias. Set out last 6 or 8 tomatoes & stopped at Bake's awhile. Temp. dropped tonight.
            24 – Went to Wayne's for lunch. Saw Milly & Eldon this morning on way home from his folks. Fixed front screen door. Nice cool summer day.
            25 – Went to church. Ate dinner at home. Went to dog show in p.m. Getting very warm.
            26 – Republican Convention on today at Chicago. Getting very warm about 96. Mr. Fristoe came today. Cut lawn tonight. Gov. Warren gave keynote address.
            27 – Hottest day of year, 100º at 5 p.m. A scorcher at convention. Hoover & Clare Luce gave nice addresses.
            28 – Gov. Dewey nominated 1056 [votes]. Temp 98.3º, but cooler in evening. Went to garden. Heard Dewey's acceptance speech.
            29 – Cooler today. Dropped to about 60. Nice to sleep. Chris's came this morning. Eldon too. Wayne's here for supper also.
            30 – Folks left today. Still cool. High 73, low 59. Mr. Knowles came today. Went to Isenagle's this evening.

July 1944
            1 – Still nice. Temp. about 80. Went shopping. Mother got new corset at Goldblatts $12.50. Went to Wayne's.
            2 – Cool. Went to church. Ate at home. Wayne's came over for evening lunch.
            3 – Still cool. Went to garden in evening. Picked first peas & string beans. Still day, no rain in sight. Eva's back still sore. Got news of Farrell from Brazil.
            4 – Cleaned garden & car inside & washed it. Getting warmer. Had fried chicken at home. Rested all p.m.
            5 – Was at Wayne's tonight. Donna got gifts from Brazil. Getting warmer.
            6 – Temp. back up to 93, no rain. Stayed home in evening.
            7 – Still warm about 94. Rain promised. Went to see Cover Girls with Rita Hayworth. Farrell in W. Africa. Probably landed about 29th.
            8 – Temp. 95.6 at 4 o'clock. Got faucets fixed & new head lamp. Picked 2nd mess of peas & beans. Good rain storm at 7 o'clock, first since June 18. Hester & Marj. over this evening. Wayne's went to cottage.
            9 – Went to Church. Dr. Smith new Grandpa. Phil has girl born yesterday. Ate dinner at home. Getting warmer again.
            10 – Went to garden. Set out 60 cabbage plants. Picked 3rd batch of peas & beans. Another big rain in night, but not much at garden.
            11 – Wayne & Nancy here for supper. Temp about 93 again. Went to garden. Planted last 2 rows Earligold corn, also row of green beans, 3rd planting of radishes & beets. Farrell in India. Big rain again tonight.
            12 – Took Donna to Wayne's & went to see Jane Eyre at Orpheum. Cool.
            13 – Still cool today.
            14 – Bought second hand Kodak Bantam ($7.50) with case & 3 filters.
            15 – Went to Church. Ate dinner at home. Went to Wayne's in p.m. Took some color pictures.
            16 – Went to garden in evening. Picked some beans & first beets.
            18 – Went to garden. Picked 8 ears corn, first time. Weidenier went along. Got 2 heads cabbage also.
            19 – Dedelow & I went to New York on 20th Century 3:30 p.m. Rained going in. Good reservations.
            20 – Arrived in New York at 9:30 a.m. and to office at 10 a.m. Saw Mr. Shea & Eisenger. Worked on Zinc Oxide cost sheets. Ate dinner at Toffennettis & went to Roxy Theatres. Hotel at Belmont Plaza.
            21 – Finished up at office. Called on Sowerwine, Dickson, Glass, Roney, Bennett & Daly. Went to Glass Hat for dinner, saw good floor show.
            22 – Went to Statue of Liberty & Radio Center and to Polo Grounds to see Giants & Cubs play. Left on Century at 5:30. Weather fine.
            23 – Came in 20 minutes ahead of schedule. Arrived in Chicago at 9:15 a.m. Home about 10:45. Wayne's here for dinner. Missed Church. Had sweet corn for dinner. Had car worked on when in New York. Tuned motor, etc. (32265 miles)
            24 – Picked more corn. Total of 48 ears since beginning. Real good. Got 6 cucumbers, first picking.        
            25 – Cut lawn tonight. Looks like rain. Rain tonight, nice easy rain, most all night.
            26 – Went to garden. Planted radishes, beets, lettuce, spinach & carrots.
            27 – Eva & Donna went with Wayne's out to Mother's. Wayne on vacation. Rained again tonight.
            28 – Planted head lettuce tonight. Picked corn, cucumbers & beans. Ate supper at Burke's & went to see Song of Russia.
            29 – Went to South Bend on South Shore. Wayne met me & we all went to Birch Lake. Cool, but went swimming. Grandma came up also.
            30 – Nice day at Birch Lake. Took pictures & went swimming. Saw Estus's. Came home with Wayne's. Eva & Donna came too.
            31 – Went to Phil Smidt's, 20 year club. Harry B. out, Monty Smith in. Took Les. C. with me.

August 1944
            1 – Getting warmer, about 88. Went to garden & picked corn, beets, carrots & cucumbers. First ripe tomatoes.
            2 – Warm & sticky. Over 90º. Getting dry. Developed first roll of 828 tonight. Cucumbers all dried up. Only got 1 pailful (8 quarts).
            3 – Temp. reached 98.6 today. Very warm.
            4 – Still over 90.
            5 – Wayne's came home last night. Were over tonight. Getting cooler. Pulled up first corn & planted cucumbers.
            6 – Went to Church. Smith in Alabama. Stanley Ralston preached. Wayne's here for dinner. Cool.
            7 – Still cool.
            8 – Eva went out home with Marj. Ralph & Hester up from Florida. Went to garden to spray melons. They are drying too. Picked tomatoes.
            9 – Sprayed melons again & watered them. Went to wrestling match, women wrestlers. Big crowd and warm.
            10 – Mom came home early today. No rain in sight. Wayne over a while. Temp 99º.
            11 – Went out to Wayne's. Lulu & Virgene there. Showed pictures. Temp. only reached 96, overcast sky.
            12 – Temp. dropping in 80's. Brought home first muskmelon & golden bantam corn from 2nd planting. Very good, but garden drying up.
            13 – Started out cool, but turned warm. Temp about 96. Stayed home, except for going to church. Wayne's here for supper or lunch.
            14 – Temp 99 today. Record breaking heat. No rain.
            15 – Ate chicken dinner at Mess Hall, Bond Committee. First rain tonight in nearly 3 weeks. Rained again in night. Temp up to 98. Picked more corn & 2 melons.
            16 – Cooler. Had 13 days in August over 90º & 33 this summer as against 11 last year. Rain did garden good, but a lot of it gone. Cut lawn & trimmed edges.
            17 – Cool today. Covered up with comfort[er].
            18 – Cool today. Temp. below 60, 72 high. Wayne's over tonight. Cleaned car. Packed to go on vacation.
            19 – Didn't get to office. Left for Mishawaka about 11 a.m. Went to Lake in p.m. with Chris's. Weather nice, but cool.
            20 – Had good Sunday dinner. Fried chicken, etc. Went swimming. Showed pictures at Estus's in evening. Chris's went home early.
            21 – Wrote letters, etc. I went swimming alone. Went to Estus's in evening.
            22 – Real cool today & windy. Went to Tubby's to buy groceries. Went to Maud's. Showed pictures. Waxed car today. [Maud is Eva's aunt, sister to Mary (Fish) Kesler. I don't think Maud ever married.]
            23 – Good rain this morning, turned cooler. Eva & I went swimming alone. Ate supper at Estus's.
            24 – Cleaned car cushions. Went fishing this evening. No catch. Had fire in stove in morning, but warmed up in day.
            25 – Went swimming at Estus's in p.m., went fishing in evening. No bites. Still cool, but not uncomfortable.
            26 – Red & I caught a lot of crickets. Still cool. Killed & cleaned 31 frogs. Eva & I ate 6 for lunch. Chris came in p.m. Gave Milly $15.00 for cottage.
            27 – Had usual fried chicken dinner & went to Miller's Mill. Got sorghum & pear butter. Rained all afternoon & most of way home. Arrived home about 6:30. Virgene had baby girl, Janet Jean.
            28 – Went to Wayne's & garden. Picked melons & tomatoes. Almost needed fire today, temp in 60's and 50's at night.
            29 – Mother & I went to see "Back Home in Indiana." Good picture. Still cool, below 70.
            30 – Went to Walter Wirls to order Sunday School material.
            31 – Went to see Virgene & new baby. Real cute. Lula here with her.

September 1944
            1 – Went to garden, picked a few tomatoes & some melons. Went to see Bake's also. Donna went along. Getting warmer. Temp near 80. Nights cool.
            2 – Warm today, about 88. Got bedroom radio fixed, $5.55. Took hum out of it. Went to see Story of Dr. Wassell.
            3 – Went to church today.
            4 – Labor Day. Took a basket lunch & ate in Forest Preserve, with kids. Went to LaGrange. Saw every one, also Tena & Dan.
            8 – Had our Anniversary dinner tonight. Bake was sick & couldn't come, so we had Harbert's & the kids. Good dinner. Gave Mother runner for dining room & table mats.
            9 – Our 29th anniversary. 20 year club went to Hines Cottage for outing. Five stayed all night. Eva & Donna went to Mishawaka. Turned gas on, but needed no fire.
            10 – Had 15 for Breakfast & 18 for dinner at cottage. A grand day & a fine time.
            11 – Went to see Barbara Hutton at Chicago Theater in person. Warm.
            12 – Eva & Donna came home tonight. It rained.
            14 – Had first Board Meeting. Pot luck at church.
            16 – Eva & I went to see "Going My Way." An excellent picture.
            17 – Went to church. Ate at home. Went to Wayne's in p.m. Lovely day & warm.
            18 – Donna got 10 letters & pictures from Farrell. He is still in China.
            19 – David's 3rd birthday. We went out for cake & ice cream. Temp in 80's. Having a real fall. Donna got 6 more letters today.
            20 – Uncle Frank Drudge here for supper. He is serving on Grand Jury. We took him out to Stewey's to see Aunt Orah. Still warm.
            21 – I went to Office Managers Dinner tonight. Warm. About 88.
            22 – Went to store to get groceries & basket of tomatoes.
            23 – Mother put up bushel of tomatoes. Pd. $1.00, nice. Canned 16 ½ quarts juice. Got basket of grapes for $1.25. Donna stayed with kids tonight. Near frost tonight. Had first furnace fire.
            24 – Went to Church. Promotion Day. Mother & I alone for dinner. Went to see Virgene & to Badelia's with Oscar & Mabel. Cool in 60's.
            30 – Went to Spa with Wisiah, Dwyer & Thornton. Took them in to Palmer House also. Eight in party.

October 1944
            1 – Rally Day. Had song program in Sunday School. At Lydia's for dinner. Went to office to help on Storeroom inventory.
            4 – Printed 3 rolls of pictures. Went around in shirt sleeves in evening.
            5 – Fine weather.
            6 – Very warm. Temp. over 70. Was out to Wayne's awhile. Also went to G.O.P. meeting.
            7 – Picked tomatoes.
            8 – Wendell Willkie died at 52 of heart attack [Republican who ran against FDR in 1940]. Went to Church. Drove to LaPorte to Big Crusade. Heard Bishop Brashares. Rained some. Took Mrs. Otto, Lucille, Bill & Mary Jean.
            9 – Turning cooler today. Frost predicted. Dahlias still blooming. Cardinals won World Series from Browns 3-1, 4 out of 6 games. Wilk & Lanier pitched for Cards.
            10 – Cool today, about 40, no frost, cloudy. Toney & I went to WPB today. Went out to see kiddies.
            11 – Mr. Stoltes left today for New York.
            14 – Went shopping, etc. Went to show.
            15 – Went to Church. Have scaffolding up for Decorating. Marj. & Bob over this evening. Stayed for lunch.
            16 – Had first frost tonight, but killed only dahlias and tender plants.
            17 – Went to Forest Preserve to have hamburger supper. Nice evening. Wayne's & Harbert's went too. Finished pictures at Hennebakers.
            20 – Had First Quarter Conference at Church tonight. Was at Wayne's for supper.
            21 – Went out home today for a few days vacation. Virgene & babies went too, also Donna. Chris home also. Every one fine. Weather ideal.
            22 – Sunday at Mother's for dinner. Went to Horse Show. Good entertainment.
            23 – Was at Earl's for supper. Weather still warm.
            24 – Was at Devoy's for dinner & supper. Beautiful day. Gov. Dewey in Minneapolis tonight.
            25 – Was at Tola's for chicken dinner & left for home about 2:30. Arrived at 5 o'clock. Gov. Dewey in Chicago. Big crowd. Good speech. Gaining on FDR.
            26 – Still warm. Went back to work. Have 2 days vacation left. Heard Gates candidate for Governor speak at Chamber of Commerce.
            27 – Went out to Wayne's. Took David a pumpkin face.
            28 – Washed storm windows & put them up in living room. Weather still fine.
            29 – Went to church. Home for dinner. Donna over to Isenagle's.
            30 – Weather fine. Wayne's were here for supper.
            31 – All time high record of 78º. Fine weather month of October. Finest fall weather for several years. Was at Wayne's for Halloween.

November 1944
            1 – Another record day of around 78. Cooler weather predicted.
            2 – First cloudy day for about a month.
            3 – Had some rain in night.
            4 – Went to Lizzie's to pick up ½ beef, 212# - 72.34#, net 140#. Bob had another heart spell. Cooler today, about 40. Put meat in locker.
            5 – Went to Church. Wayne's at Church. Here for dinner. Temp about 40º. Gertie & family stopped for awhile today.
            6 – Was at Wayne's tonight. Got hair cut. Last campaign speeches tonight.
            7 – Election Day. Big turn out. Donna worked at polls, earned $21.00. We were at Wayne's to hear returns.
            8 – Roosevelt re-elected 4th time, 24 million to 21 million votes, 432 – 99 electoral votes. Dewey ran a good race. War defeated him.
            12 – Went to Church. Home for dinner. Went to Badelia's. Eva went out to Mother's with Devoy's. Stopped to see Uncle Dock. Went to Church this evening.
            13 – Went over to see Lewie Lotz a minute. He was home on first furlough.
            14 – Had Sunday School Board meeting tonight.
            15 – Went to see Andy Hardy in Blonde Troubles. Donna stayed with David & Diane. We went there for supper.
            16 – Went to Office Managers Club tonight.
            17 – Went to see "I Love a Soldier." Stopped to visit with Walter.
            18 – Went shopping. Fixed bad lamp. Weather still warm, but cloudy skies.
            19 – Went to Church. Wayne's for dinner. Church meeting in p.m. Took pictures of kids & went to church again at night. Walter, Dan, Tena & Marj. stopped at Wayne's.
            20 – Developed 2 films. Wayne's here for supper. Donna had chili. Donna & Nancy got gifts for Bud & Dyers.
            21 – Printed pictures tonight until late. Wayne's here a minute.
            22 – Bud McMillen married today. Wayne went to wedding. Donna, Virgene & I went out home. Eva still at her mother's.
            23 – Thanksgiving Day. Tola's & us were at Devoy's for dinner. They all gave me gas [I think he's referring to gasoline as they were farmers and weren't under the gas rationing?]. First snow of season, but it soon melted. Temp about 35. Came home tonight.
            25 – Went shopping. Took Diane. She stayed here when kids went to Purdue [for football game]. Indiana won 14-6. Nell McQuiston died tonight
            26 – Went to Church. Kids here for dinner. Went to Church at night. Tena & Dan dropped in.
            27 – Went to Chapel to see Nell McQuiston.
            28 – Put 10 chickens in the locker $1.50 each. About 3 lbs.
            29 – Went to Foreman's Meeting at Vogels. Temp dropped about 15º to near 20.

December 1944
            1 – Nora's Birthday. They, Wayne's & Walter here for supper. Had nice supper. Rump roast. Cold.
            2 – Went shopping. Had car greased 34875 & oil changed. Went to see Marj. & Bob's new home. First below freezing weather this fall.
            3 – Went to church. David stayed for Sunday School. They were here for dinner. Had fried & roast chicken. Went to Reception for new members.
            4 – Auditors Gulick & Ordillas arrived today. Lowest temp about 14 above.
            5 – Wayne & I printed pictures.
            6 – Wayne's over for a minute to get pictures. Temp. up to 30 & over again.
            7 – Went to show. Saw 7th Cross. 3rd anniversary of Pearl Harbor. B-29s bombed Tokyo. Earthquake also rocked Japan. Very ironical.
            8 – Stayed home. Temp. about 40. Uncle Dock reported in a coma. Hester on way. Uncle Dock passed away at 8:30 tonight.
            9 – Hester arrived today. First cold spell.
            10 – Went out home. Took Hester. Chris's there. Uncle Dock at Claypool. Snowed heavy today. First real snow of year. Traffic being slowed down. Not too cold.
            11 – Bad day. Snow deeper. Everyone getting stuck. Funeral at Talma, also John L. Kesler. Wayne & I pall bearers. Wayne drove home with us. Not so bad coming home.
            12 – Folks at Wayne's for Mom's birthday. I had to go to Plant dinner at Lundgrens.
            14 – Went to Plunkets Dinner. Lots to eat.
            15 – Coldest day so far, about 2 below in night. Still printing pictures.
            16 – Finished pictures for Wayne's cards.

            17 – Went to Church. Kids went to Chicago with Harberts.
            20 – Had Christmas Party at plant in Mess Hall. 60 people there. Had good time.
            22 – Temp. dropped to 2 below, first below zero temp.
            23 – Took Mr. & Mrs. Stolte to South Shore. Played Santa at plant to various people. Finished shopping & trimmed tree (cost $1.50).
            24 – Went to Church. Had Sunday School Christmas Play. Kids here for dinner. We went to Vesper Communion at 4. Fresh snow today. Delivered parcels to Marj., Virgene. Went to Toneys with Chas. Baker. Not so cold.
            25 – Had our tree at home, then went to Wayne's. Kids were so excited. Went to Harbert's for dinner, all the Griffith clan there. Temp. between 20 & 30.
            26 – Went to see Virginia Lindeman. Ate out with Wayne's. Temp 7 below in a.m., raising to about 8 above.
            27 – Snowing today. Temp about 14 above raising to 20 at night. Donna went with Betty to party at Bennetts.
            30 – Got patch put on seat cushions. Went to locker. Cold.
            31 – Went to Church. Home for dinner. Stayed home all day. Temp. about 30 all day. Went to bed early. Donna went to Betty's. December generally cold & lots of snow & ice.
