1960

January 1960
            1 – Roads clear, snow on ground. Temp in 20's. Went to Milly's. Wayne's came too. Washington beat Wisconsin 44-8.
            2 – Temp about 40. Raining & melting all snow. Worked 'til 4 p.m.
            3 – Stayed home. Fairly warm.
            4 – Went to Dr. Blood pressure 178-104. Go back in 30 days.
            5 – Colder, around 20 above.
            6 – Temp in 40's & thawing. Washed car & bathed Major. Ate at Mais's [not sure with handwriting where they ate…but I think possibly Birch Lake friends Daisy & Otto Mais?]
            7 – Temp about same, about 40.
            8 – About 45 today, colder tonight.
            9 – Cleaned barn. Warm.
            10 – Foggy, damp, but warm in 40's. Wayne's came through fog. Had pick up dinner. They left about 6. Fixed pump.
            11 – Getting warm. Was kind of dizzy all day.
            12 – Raining hard. Had severe headache, so stayed home all day. Rained nearly 2 inches. Temp. hit an all-time high 58 º.
            13 – Temp dropped to near 40 º.
            14 – Windy & colder.
            15 – Started to snow & blow, but stopped suddenly & sun came out.
            16 – Colder, about 25 this a.m. Went over 30 in day time.
            17 – Went to Milly's for dinner. Seems to be getting colder & ready to snow.
            18 – Woke up to about 2 inches of snow. First for some time.
            19 – Snows a little nearly every day. Roads are good.          
            20 – Got first Valiant, a wagon, in today. It looks nice.
            21 – Pretty clear & cold.
            22 – Snowing this morning. Have a depth of about 6 inches.
            23 – Still cold about 9º in a.m.
            24 – Cold & sunny, about 22º - low 10 in morning.
            25 – Temp going up. Cold in Florida, dropped to 21 some spots.
            26 – Nice weather, but foggy.
            27 – No change in temp.
            28 – Fairly mild temp.
            29 – John left for Florida [assuming John Ball]. Still in 40's.
            30 – Worked today 'til 4:30. Warm.
            31 – Mild & some sun. Milly & Eldon up for dinner. Thawed. 40 all day.
           
February 1960
            1 – Cloudy but mild. High about 40º.
            2 – Sunshine & cold about 12 in a.m. Worked tonight.
            3 – Got quart wheat germ oil for ponies $4.50.
            4 – Temp between 30 & 40.
            5 – Worked tonight. Raining & thawing. Snow almost gone. Temp about 40.
            6 – 65 years old today. Never thought I'd make it. Milly & Eldon took us to Mayfair to swell dinner. Came home in blizzard, ending shortly before midnight.
            7 – Quit snowing in night. Roads a little slick. Picked up paper & stayed home all day.
            8 – Worked tonight.
            10 – Rained & froze on top of snow. Limbs broken, power off 9 hours. Stayed home & kept fireplace going, temp in 30's.
            11 – Went to work. Worked tonight.
            12 – More snow & colder.
            13 – Kids came about noon. Left about 8 p.m. Kids skated & slid on hill.
            14 – Bright, sunny & cold. Stayed home.
            15 – Temp in 30's.
            17 – Having colder weather.
            18 – John got home this morning. Was tanned brown.
            19 – More snow in night & snowed most of day, about 5 or 6 inches total on ground.
            20 – Temp over 30 & sunny. About 3 inches of snow melted.
            21 – Snowed in night. Went to Union for papers & stayed home.
            22 – Sold a '58 Plymouth & went to Rotary. Eva went to hairdresser.
            23 – Took Major & Queenie to vet. Got 2 year shot. [I believe Queenie was Neterer's dog – Birch Lake neighbors Frank & Mildred.]
            24 – Winter still hanging on. Temp around 30's. Got 110 gallons oil. Got dog & car license at Cassopolis.
            25 – Snowing & blowing all day. Went home before 4, arrived safe. Quit in night but piled up 5 or 6 inches of snow.
            26 – Roads drifted so I stayed home. Probably could have made it. Temp. went to 40º.
            27 – Went to work, bought groceries on way home. Roads clear.
            28 – Got paper at Jones & stayed home.
            29 – Still snow & cold.
           
March 1960
            1 – Temp 2 below at 6, 6 above at 8. First zero of winter. Whole country snowed in, even South.
            2 – About 9 above. Our hardest winter in later February & now March.
            3 – More snow in night. Roads covered & some drifts. Bob Smith's baby dead in bed.
            4 – My day to work. Again about 2 below at 6 a.m. Warmed up to 20's.
            5 – About 10 above at 6 a.m. Stayed home. More snow.
            6 – Milly & Eldon here for dinner. Nice day. Still cold.
            7 – Sunny, but cold. Temp dropped below 10 at night. Warms to 30º day. Ordered new Valiant wagon for us.
            8 – Snow melting slow.
            9 – Temp. still low at night & early morning. Coldest weather of winter.
            10 – All of South & East covered with deep snow. We are real lucky. Mrs. Ball & Mom went to see Hazel Harvey.
            12 – Still cold, but sunny. Worked today 'til 4. Elkhart lost in Regionals to Ft. Wayne. Ft. Wayne won in final.
            13 – Went to Milly's for dinner. Partly cloudy. Temp up to 30. Was 8 above this a.m.
            14 – Still cold in a.m. Thawed late in day. Sunny.
            15 – Bright & sunny 6. A lot of snow melted. Took Stude to Elkhart.
            16 – A new snow storm, about 5 inches. Mom had Home Ec. But few came.
            17 – Cleaned up. Stude $1200. Man is interested in it.
            18 – Snow melting. Up near 40.
            19 – East Chicago Washington won 1st State Champ. Beat Muncie 75-59. Upset. Clear & warm, over 40.
            20 – Snowing & sun shining. Temp early 16 above. Went to about 30. We went over to Mary & Jack's. Ate dinner at Union.
            21 – Our new car came in today.
            22 – Temp. still between 10-30.
            23 – Temp. about 12 above low, 32 high.
            24 – Snowing & cold. Worked tonight. About as bad a day to drive as we have had.
            25 – Drove home in new Valiant wagon $2465 list $2895. Still cold.
            26 – Got 3 inches more snow in night. Hill slick, stayed home. Sun came out & temp went to 45, melted a lot of snow.
            27 – Went to Milly's for dinner. Temp in 50's. Thawing fast.
            28 – Temp 44 at 7 a.m. Fog. Went up to 56. Lots of thaw.
            29 – Warmest day of year, near 75. Thawed a lot. Snow about gone. Quickest return to Spring, about 3 days.
            30 – Some rain. Temp in 60's. Grass beginning to show green. Frost leaving ground.
            31 – Overcast & foggy. Temp 32º at 7:30 a.m.
           
April 1960
            1 – Temp between 20 & 40. Light snow at night.
            2 – Kids came in p.m. Opened cottage. Warm in 60's. Worked 'til 4 p.m.
            3 – Kids here today. Milly & Eldon here for dinner. Cool & windy all day. Bred Sugar today, 2nd time.
            4 – Overcast & cool, in 30's.
            5 – Overcast & cool, in 30's.
            6 – Still on cool side, but Lake nearly open.
            7 – Bred Honey Bee, 1st time this year. Got haircut.
            8 – Got 1st Social Security check, 2 months $333.20. Windy & cool.
            9 – Stayed home. Fresh snow about an inch with flurries all morning. Snow gone by noon. Lank helped me sow seed & nitrates. Paid him $8.00, $54.80 for seed & nitrate. Cool in 30's. $5.00 for seeder rental.
            10 – Picked up papers & took cans to dump. Home all day. Took walk & visited several people. Real nice day.
            12 – Worked for Smitty tonight.
            13 – Temp above 75º. 78 in Chicago. Had Stallion checked, just fair. Examined Penny. She is to foal soon.
            14 – Eva got permanent $10.00. Temp in 70's. Warm rain about .6 inch in night. Sugar took Stud today.
            15 – Good Friday. Foggy. Rained .6 inch rain in night. Thunder storm.
            16 – Wayne's came up for day. Cool & rained. About 1.2 inch in night. Sold Mom's '56 Stude St $875 & '51 Chevrolet.
            17 – Easter Sunday. Went to Church at Mishawaka & went to Howard Johnsons with Eldon's. Temp hit 65º, some rain. Dropped to 40 by evening.
            18 – Vern's went to Kentucky. Cool this morning.
            19 – Plowed 10 ft. garden. Brought home iron gates.
            20 – Temp 70º. Came home early. Tilled & planted 1st row peas, onions & radishes. Sowed 10 lb. rye grass.
            21 – Getting warm. About 75º. Chicago Tribune started in mail today. Wrens came today. Early.
            22 – Warmest April 22nd of record, & hottest day since Sept. 25th. About 85. Rained 1¼ inch in night.
            23 – Warm 85º. Plowed strip for corn. Cleaned up around place. Went to Dr. Billings. Blood pressure 200-90. Sprayed trees.
            24 – Milly & Eldon here for dinner. Warm in 80's.
            25 – Planted 4 hills cucumbers.
            26 – Steele looked at washer. Pump wore out. Service $5.00.
            27 – Came home early. Plowed in melon patch. Got pump part for washer. $2.35. Works good.
            28 – My last relief night.
            29 – Drizzled about .2 inch. Last day on Official Duty, worked 'til 8:45 p.m.
            30 – Rained nearly all day, about .6 inch. First day of Retirement. Cool.
           
May 1960
            1 – Cool 38º in morning, high 55º. Sprayed trees, bought 5 bushels oats $3.50. Zubers dropped in.
            2 – Transferred license plates to Valiant. Got trailer plates $3.55. Took Mom to hairdresser & I went through Elkhart Clinic. Blood pressure 180. Fees $40.00.
            3 – Tilled land & planted 3 rows early corn. Temp 70º. Washed car.
            4 – Penny had male colt in night – Strong & cute.  Bay with one spot. Possibly 344 days. Fixed melon fence & planted 3 rows Honey Rock. Temp in 70's.
            5 – Mom scrubbed & waxed floor. Burnt brush by barn & set out deck furniture. Warm & sunny, over 70.
            6 – Went shopping in Elkhart. Ate lunch at Wilt's. Rained .2 inches. Planted row beans & Hearts of Gold. Temp in 70's.
            7 – Rained last night 1.2 inches. Wayne's came about 3:30. Dave not along. Ate supper here. Cool around 40º.
            8 – Still cool in low 40's. Mothers Day. Harbert's came up. Rained late p.m. Cut grass.
            9 – Rained in night .4 inch total. We went to Kriders, got dahlias, glads & pfitzer $11.75 total. Cool in 40's.
            10 – Still drizzling. Temp still around 40º. Too cool to plant. Went to barber at Jones $1.00 hair cut.
            11 – Still cool, in 40's. Cloudy. Grubbed some & planted dahlias.
            12 – Still cool in 40's.
            13 – Getting warmer. Sunshine. Went Elkhart shopping. Got head gasket for tractor. Planted row of glads.
            14 – Couldn't start tractor. Got fishing license. Mr. Hughs from Goshen came to fish. Frank got tractor running. Plowed most of garden. About 70º.
            15 – Went to Milly's for dinner. Nice day in low 80's. Stopped at Mary's on way home. Bred Penny today, 1st time.
            16 – Finished plowing melon patch. Rained in p.m. & all night. Total .8".
            17 – Went to Detroit with Balls. Big dinner & Silver Jubilee. Drew $20 in silver. Home at 12:15 a.m.
            18 – Painted 3 windows. Warm & sunny.
            19 – Tilled melon patch & finished plowing garden. Raining & cool. Went to Cass for Hormones. Rained ¾". Picked up Hormones. [Hormones probably for the stallion, Sir Cedric]
            20 – Went to Elkhart. Got mower fixed. Rained again. Planted row of peas.
            21 – Nice morning. Planted 3 rows corn & more Glads. Hollisters from LaGrange stopped to see us. Wayne's came at noon. Rained nearly all day .8". Dave & Diane went home.
            22 – Cloudy, fair & a little warmer. Wayne's ate dinner here. We cut grass & put in one section of pier. First corn just peeping through, after 19 days. Rained .1" in night. All 3 ponies apparently settled.
            23 – Planted 2 rows ___, 1 row watermelons, 1 row squash. Cloudy & warmer. 40 low 65 high. Stirred flower garden.
            24 – Replanted 3 rows Honey Rock, 1 row Heart of Gold, ½ row cucumbers. Warm in 70's. First corn just coming up – 3 weeks.
            25 – Got Nancy's dirt. Warm & sunny. Washed car.
            26 – Rained .35". Worked around place all day.
            27 – Went shopping in Elkhart. Put block wall on hill.
            28 – Went down to cemetery with Milly & Eldon. Ate lunch there & they came up here & stayed all night. Kids came at 3:30.
            29 – Put in pier & put up electric fence. We grilled steak & ate out. Water 60º.
            30 – Cut lawn & ate out. Wayne's left about 7 p.m.
            31 – Bright, sunny & 70. Set out about 80 tomato plants, 1 dozen Early Hybrids, 1 Glamor, 3 crackproof, 3 dozen cabbage. Got at Lank's, $2.95.

June 1960
            1 – Went for first swim, water 65º.
            2 – Got some iris from Foote's patch. Tilled most of garden.
            3 – Went shopping. Nice day. Came home for lunch.
            4 – Wayne's came at noon. We ate off grill. Mary called at midnight. Earl bad. She & Russell to fly down. Rained .6 inch. Planted annual flower seeds.
            5 – Nice day. Loafed around. In 70's. Wayne's left early. We drove in to Milly's, to tell them about Earl.
            6 – Nice day, in 60's. Set out some iris & 1 dozen peppers.
            7 – Went fishing in p.m. Cool around 65º.
            8 – Cool in 60's. Set out 1 dozen peppers. Planted row of onions, radishes & peas.
            9 – Still cool. Mary & Russell came home. Earl better. Started cutting grass. Broke belt.
            10 – Went shopping. Getting warmer. Replanted melons & squash. Set out petunias.
            11 – Put new belt on power mower. Finished cutting grass. Wayne's came about 4:30. David came later in his '53 Dodge. Rained all night about 1 inch. Annetta came too. Warm, turning cooler. Water temp 68º.
            12 – Colder most of day. Launched boat. Ate at Wayne's. Went to Mary & Jack's in evening. Earl better.
            13 – Rained all night. Easy rain, about 1½ in. Cool in 60's. Rained all day.
            14 – Still raining. Another .9 inch. Was holed up for 2 days.
            15 – Went to Barber & Beauty Shop. Sunny today. Planted ½ row cucumbers, more glads. Sunny morning. Cloudy & rain in p.m.
            16 – Big rain & windstorm tonight, about .8" rain. Over 4 inches rain this week.
            17 – Furnace on today in 50 & 60's. Went shopping. Man put up new T.V. Antenna $54.66, plus tubes etc.
            18 – Kids didn't come up. Picked 2 quarts strawberries at Hillrings, 25¢ each.
            19 – Sunny & warmer. Milly & Eldon came in p.m. Stayed for lunch.
            20 – Clear & sunny. Went fishing twice. No luck.
            21 – Cultivated whole garden. Rained .1 inch.
            22 – Rained again. About .1 inch. Planted 2 rows 4th planting of corn & a full row of beans. Candy 1 year old [pony].
            23 – Painted all north windows frames. Relaxed in p.m. Temp in 70's. Very nice. Man took our T.V. set.
            24 – Went shopping.
            25 – Kids came about 10 a.m., brought sail boat. Went home early. We went to Milly's for supper. Ate outside. Beautiful day.
            26 – Picked 3 boxes strawberries. Nice day. Milly & Eldon here for dinner.
            27 – Weather warming up good. Need rain. Balls came out to stay for 1st time. We were there for evening. Went for check up. Blood pressure 162 & 165, lowest for long time.
            28 – Real nice weather. Not too warm. Had mess of peas. Gave Balls some.
            29 – Mom waxing floors.
            30 – Rained .8 inch afternoon & evening.
           
July 1960
            1 – Went shopping. Got TV back, put on a new converter.
            2 – Planted last 2 rows corn. Kids came at noon. Big rain storm tonight about 2½ inches rain. Lake temp. 73º.
            3 – Stopped raining & cleared. Windy & cool, about 65. A windy sailboat race.
            4 – Two races today. Nice day on cool side.
            5 – Kids went in to Hammond. Still cool.
            6 – Harbert's came this morning for lunch. Wayne's came about 4:30. Cool but nice. Diane in Lions Parade in Chicago.
            7 – Harbert's here all day. Had 1st mess of green beans.
            8 – Harbert's left. We went shopping in Elkhart. Wayne making boat sling. Getting warmer.
            9 – Cultivated & weeded garden. Aunt Mabel came at 4 p.m. Warm about 84º.
            10 – Nice day. Dave came with 3 boys.        
            11 – Democratic Convention opened in L.A.
            12 – Went cherry picking at Bristol.
            13 – Took Mabel to see Hazel at South Bend. Stopped at Milly's & Mary's. Nice day.
            14 – Loafed around all day.
            15 – Put Mabel on 1:15 Grand Trunk. She went to Alex's.
            16 – Went shopping alone, back by 10:30.
            17 – Big Day at Lake. Lots of people. Collets dropped in in evening. Light rain in night.
            18 – Hot in town. Cool here. Cracked head on tractor.
            19 – Got car greased & oil changed at 3465 miles. Nice breeze at Lake 75.
            20 – Started to get hot in town, in 80's. Still in 70's here.
            21 – Need rain, getting dry. Went to Milly's. Had barbecued chicken.
            22 – Dave came in this morning at 3 a.m. Had a good rain & thundershower at night, totaled 1.3 inches. First since July 2nd. Hottest day of year so far, 86 here about 93 in Chicago.
            23 – Kids had car wash at park for Yacht Club benefit. Picked 3 quarts raspberries. First cucumbers.
            24 – Kids vacation ended. Milly & Eldon here for dinner.
            25 – Republican Convention opened today.
            26 – Raining, about ½ inch. Ike in Chicago. Big Parade.
            27 – Nixon nominated on first ballot. Had first sweet corn today.
            28 – Lodge nominated as Vice President. Warm & humid about 87º.
            29 – Went shopping. Warmest day at Lake, just under 90.
            30 – Kids came about noon We all went to Mary's for supper & watched Regatta.
            31 – Had corn tonight. Kids left at 8 p.m. Lake temp 77º. Cool outdoors.

August 1960
            1 – Painted balcony floor.
            2 – Warm, high 80's.
            3 – Big wind & rain storm at 2 a.m., about .4 inches. More rain & high winds at 11 a.m. another .4 inches. Picked up engine head at Goshen, $4.32.
            4 – Cooler today, low 70's.
            5 – Went shopping.
            6 – Rained .4 inch. Kids came about 3 p.m. Went to Paw Paw with Balls. Ate at Cass.
            7 – Kids left about 8 p.m. Nice day. Had first tomatoes. Lots of corn, cucumbers & beans.
            8 – Clear & warmer, but nice. Cutting weeds in field.
            9 – Mowed & picked beans.
            10 – Still mowing. Cool in 60's. Rained about .8 inch.
            12 – Went shopping. Kids came out tonight. Brought Diane to Elkhart.
            13 – Nancy to Baton Contest at Elkhart. Diane placed 4th. Had corn roast at Yacht Club new building.
            14 – Nice day. Kids went home at 8 p.m.
            15 – Went to Hammond to attend Lucy's wedding at Church. Stayed all night. Half of Cub team at wedding. [This was on a Monday – probably had to pick wedding date that didn't interfere with Cubs baseball schedule.]
            16 – Went to Elmer Jones funeral before coming home. James came with us.
            18 – Omar & Bee Hager came for day, 1st time here. Penny has bad diarrhea. Very sick. Got medicine from Vet.
            19 – Nancy, kids, Dave & Annetta came about 1 p.m. Went shopping late at Elkhart.
            20 – Clyde & Alwin Beach came to see Wayne's. Wayne came at 1 p.m. We went to Yacht Club dinner. Rained about .4 inches in night.
            21 – Clyde's stayed all night. Was a nice Sunday. Penny OK again. Saw Echo go over sky about 8:26 [Echo 1 was NASA's first passive communications satellite - a 100-ft. diameter balloon which functioned as a reflector rather than a transceiver. A signal would be sent to it, reflected off its surface, and then returned to Earth. I remember standing on the sidewalk in Hammond at night with all the neighbors to watch it pass over in the night sky.]
            22 – Got load of stone & raked around front. Wrote to Donna.
            23 – Vern & I drove to Niles.
            24 – Picked up 15 bushels oats at Mallos. Cost $9.00.
            25 – Got a load of stone for front of house.
            26 – Nancy, Dave & kids came about 1 p.m. Wayne came in night.
            27 – Bake's came about 2 p.m. Stayed at Wayne's.
            28 – Gordon & Dean DeCoudres came to spend day. Real nice day & real good time.
            29 – Lulu & Devoy came from Gerald's. We visited all day. Took boat ride. Real nice weather. Penny in again & bred. Week overdo. Had small rain.
            30 – Took Devoy's to see Mary & also stopped at Uncle Clyde's. They were fine. Clyde 82 years old.
            31 – Lulu & Devoy left this morning. We had a real good time & visit. Temp about 87º. Over 90 in Chicago.

September 1960
            1 – Had Dr. appointment, blood pressure both near normal. Got groceries. Picked up 7 more bushel oats. Wayne came in time for supper. Has extra day off. Temp near 95º. Dave came in night with Annetta.
            2 – Got eggs today. Warm. Need rain. Cut limb off Tulip tree. Loafed around. Warm.
            3 – Hot & humid. Temp. over 90º in Chicago. Penny bred today & I think she settled. Went to Dowagiac to see Judge Mosie today on Public beach.
            4 – Collet's went home tonight.
            5 – Labor Day. Skippered sailboat for Dad's race, with Wayne, finished 7th. Also rode on Flexaboard.  Kids all left at 8 p.m. Really a warm Labor Day, about 85º.
            6 – Warm in 90's at Chicago.
            7 – Warm here, temp 89º, 100 in Chicago.
            8 – Mom went through Elkhart Clinic. Got groceries & came home. Temp. hit 90 for first time this summer. Rain in evening & night, total .8".
            9 – Turned cooler, about 75º. We canned 20 quarts tomato juice. Donna called for our 45th anniversary.
            10 – Dave came with 5 boys. Wayne came about 2 p.m. Went to see Judge again. Temp. in 60's. Milly & Eldon up for supper.
            11 – Nice day. Harbert's came for day. Had 16 to eat.
            12 – Cool, cloudy & windy. Cut weeds. Tried to fish. Sprinkled.
            13 – Canned 10 quarts tomato juice.
            14 – Painted east side windows.
            15 – Mild & cool. Rained .2 inch rain. Painted garage & basement.
            16 – Went shopping. Mrs. Mais went with us. Warming up some.
            17 – Storing boats in yacht club. Kids came about 2:30.
            18 – Nice day. Kids left about 5 p.m.
            19 – Rained all night 1.4". Temp high 60's. Put 500 lbs. stone in front.
            20 – Brother George is 86 today. Oldest Milne of record. Hester came up with Marge, Badelia & Gloria. Had nice visit.
            21 – Having lovely weather.
            22 – Went shopping today. Mom stayed home.
            23 – Went to Centerville Fair at 2 p.m. Saw about 15 Trotter Heats. Ate supper & came home.
            24 – Picked up 2 bushels Macintosh at Cantrells. Kids didn't come up.
            25 – Went to Milly's to fish fry. She had about 30 mostly blue gills. Went out to Bill Miller's new place. Rained some.
            26 – Trimmed up some trees cut down. Mr. Mais reset basement door.
            27 – Went to Garners. No one home.
            28 – Went back to Garners. She wants $400.00 for Stallion.
            29 – Cut more trees. Rained about .3" in night.
            30 – Mais' went to Elkhart with us. Trimmed more trees.

October 1960
            1 – Temp about 40º this morning, but no frost here. Some in Elkhart. Kids came this p.m.
            2 – Nancy's folks all up for day. Beautiful day, a cool wind blowing. Kids had a big day.
            3 – Still nice weather.
            4 – Warm days, cool nights. Dry.
            5 – First game of World Series won by Pirates 6-4 – Law won.
            6 – Yanks won 16-3. Turley won.
            7 – Went shopping. October so far is a gorgeous month. Men cut down big elm tree, $50.00.
            8 – Frank cut up limbs for $7.50. Kids came at 11 a.m. Frank cut down 4 trees & we sawed them with power saw. Yanks won 10-0 – Whitey Ford.
            9 – Took in piers, boats, piled wood & burnt brush. Bucs won 3-2, Vernon Law. Lovely day again.
            10 – Temp clear & in 70's. Washed car. Buc's went ahead 3-2, score 5-3 with Haddix.
            11 – Polished car first time. Lovely day again. In 70's.

            24 – Strong north wind all day. Temp high of 40. Temp dropped to low of 28 in night. Killing frost, first time.

            28 – Went shopping. Got car greased & oil changed 5400 miles. Adjusted tappets [also called hydraulic valve lifter]. Helped Otto with cement curb.

            30 – Stayed all night at Wayne's. Went to Church. Temp in 60's. Home about 6 p.m. Ponies O.K.
            31 – Raining & colder, in 40's. Cleaned up barn & straightened this end. Rained .4 inch.

November 1960

            6 – First snow, about 3 inches. All melted by night. Temp 38. Went to Milly's for dinner.
            7 – Temp dropped to 21 in night. High 40 today. Bright & sunny. Campaign ends tonight. Took up bulbs.
            8 – Election day. Big turn out of voters, near 70 million. Went to Balls for supper & to watch disappointing returns.
            9 – Nixon lost presidency by narrowest of margins, less than 123,000 popular vote.
            11 – Went shopping. Picked up carpet at Sears, cost of $44.50. Nice day.
            12 – Cut some wood in pasture. Frank's saw froze up. Wayne's here about 3 hours to close cottage. Warm in 50's.
            13 – Real nice day, about 60º. Home alone all day.
            14 – Real warm & sunny 65º. Picked up wood & saw about corn. Bought bushel Northern Spy apples $1.75.
            15 – High 70º. Ate potato pancakes at Mais. Real good.
            16 – In 60's with thunder shower. Planted cork tree & transplanted Mountain Ash.
            17 – Cooler, in 40's. 32º in morning. Clear.
            18 – Went shopping. Nice day. Temp in 40's.
            19 – Milly called, asked us in for dinner & Thanksgiving.
            20 – Went to Church with Milly & Eldon & had dinner there. Lovely day.
            21 – Burned brush & covered roses with manure.
            22 – Mom went to beauty parlor. Royce & Lilah Milne came up with Bob Bielby. Hadn't seen him since 1934. Washed car. Rained a little.
            23 – Temp in 40's. Cool at night, low of 25.
            24 – Thanksgiving Day. Temp around 50 & sunny. Went to Milly's. Had lovely turkey dinner. Mary & Jack there. Took Mais to South Bend.
            25 – Beautiful day - 50º. Went shopping.
            26 – High 63º in Chicago. Record since 1927. Sunny & bright.
            27 – Warm & cloudy. High 50's. Home alone all day.
            28 – Temp high 68º a record. Was in shirt sleeves.
            29 – Temp. dropped to 25º today & brought snow & wind. Mais here for supper. Shut ponies up 1st time.
            30 – Got up to 6-8 inches of snow. Temp under 30. Flurries all day. Weaning Sundance.

December 1960
            1 – Snow melting some. Cold at night, about 21.
            2 – Went shopping and to Dr. Billings. Blood pressure ok, he says. Went up about 156.
            3 – Warming & thawing, high 30's.
            4 – Went to Milly's. Temp 50º, snow all gone. Brought back bed & dresser for Wayne's.
            5 – Real nice day, cloudy but over 50º.
            6 – Raked leaves, picked up corn. Temp about 40, but dropping.
            7 – Temp 25º this morning, still cloudy.
            9 – Went shopping. Nice day. Temp 13º low, 25 high. Big blizzard & sub-zero in Valpo.
            11 – Milly & Eldon took us to dinner at South Bend Airport for Eva's birthday. About 32º.
            12 – Windy & colder today, below 20. Donna called tonight, Mom's Birthday. Talked to all, about 20 minutes.
            13 – Temp. below 20º.
            14 – Was awakened at 2:30 by a big fire at Lake. Hulls & Meringas cottages burnt to ground. Mullens & Machallecks saved only by 5 fire engines. "Cold."
            15 – Warmer, over 30º. Picked up 19 bushels corn $15.00 at Mallos. Raining & snowing tonight.
            16 – Went shopping. Mais didn't go. Bought gifts. Roads slick. Temp low 20's.
            17 – Temp in 20's, some snow on ground. Balls out to see Fire damage.
            18 – Had Mais down for dinner. Had pot roast. Watched Pro Football. Lake all open again.
            19 – Started snowing again. Temp same, in 20's.
            20 – A lot more snow fell, 2 or 3 inches. Temp about same. Lake starting to freeze again.
            21 – Temp hit 4 above at 7 a.m., rose to 24 in day. Snow ended, except for a few flurries. Below normal temp.
            22 – Mom got hair set at Jones. Temp. hit zero first time this winter. Went to Mais for supper.
            23 – Went shopping. Temp hit a new low of 10 below here, high about 10 above. Clear skies.
            24 – Cleaned out stable good. Temp between 10 & 20 above. Warming.
            25 – 10 above when we left at 8:15 for Mishawaka. Went with them to Hammond. Had big dinner & nice Christmas at Wayne's, arrived there about 11 a.m. Stayed all night. Thawed.
            26 – Temp went to 46 in Chicago. About 42 in Elkhart, but dropping. Was 24 about 6:30. We got home about 5. Had some snow flurries on Toll Road. Ate lunch at Milly's. Otto took care of ponies & Major. Snow about gone.
            27 – Temp. in 20's. Pump at barn broke. Shut off.
            28 – Haines fixed pump, cost $8.00. New shut-off. Temp about 25.
            29 – Temp up to 30º. Fair.
            30 – Temp. over 30º. Went shopping.

            31 – Temp still the same.
