22 – Mom & I went shopping. Went
to Neterers for ice cream, Otto's Birthday. Dave & Annetta came up.
23 – Wayne's came in p.m. Took in
boats & stored them in port. Started to rain about 6 p.m. Rained all night.
24 – Still raining in showers.
Wayne's left about 2:30.
25 – Still raining. Total 2.75
inches since Friday. Gave Daisy tomatoes. Turning cooler 60º at 5p.m. Had
another ½ inch rain.
26 – Painted all house windows. Otto
helped on 4. Temp low 60s.
27 – Painted barn gates & inside
house doors & casings. Temp dropping. Mrs. Stolte passed away today [former boss's wife].
28 – Temp dropping. Frost predicted.
Had light white frost, temp about 35º.
29 – First light frost. Not much
damage. Cedric got out, was at Montondas all day. Went shopping. Warming up.

October 1961
1 – Ovy Asher's came up in p.m. Left
at 5:30.
2 – Pretty good wash day. In 60's.
Cool at night.
3 – Cedric out again. Over at
Montandans. Kept him in corral at night.
4 – Fair & warm in 60s. Yankees
won 1st game from Cincinnati 2-0. Whitey Ford.
5 – Summer day, 75º. Cincinnati won
6-2, Jay & Terry. Leaves turning slowly.
6 – Went shopping alone. Mom went to
Brunch at Coans. Fine day. Warm.
7 – Wayne's came at 11:30. Beautiful
day in 70s. Cedric got out again. Yanks won 3-2.
8 – Rode ponies & took in pier.
Lovely weather. Yanks won 7-0.
9 – Put away garden machinery. Sowed
some Timothy & Rye grass. Warm. Yanks won series 13-5 – 5 games.
10 - 75º again today. Warm at night.
11 – Slight sprinkle this a.m. Got
20 bushels oats at Mallos, value $14.00. High 75º again. Got word of Mrs.
Stoltes death today.
12 – Washed & polished car. Temp
75º again. Beautiful fall weather.

& temp went up in 50s. Home alone. John Jones dropped in from Elkhart.

farms. Left trailer at Mallos for corn. Nice day.
19 – Rained all morning. Couldn't
pick up corn.

Built fire for Wayne's. They came about 1:30 a.m. after Julie's rehearsal.
21 – Went to wedding with Wayne's.
All 5 grandchildren in Party. Temp about 48º. Got home about 7 p.m.

came out & it was in 50's. Collet's came up. Wayne's closed cottage.
23 – Walter & Helen came up in
time for lunch & stayed 'til 4:30. Walter & I picked up corn, about 20
bushels, value $20.00. Rained late.
24 – Bright & sunny. Over 50º.
25 – Rained again .2 inch.
Thunderstorm in p.m., rained .3 inch. Last of year.
26 – Took Otto to Jones. Picked
squash. No frost yet. Temp to 60s.
27 – First killing frost about 30º
for a few hours. Raised to 48º in day. Leaves about in full color.
28 – Raining, but warm, about 70º.
Went to Milly's for dinner.
29 – Still cloudy. Leaves about in
full color & starting to fall. Temp in 60s.
30 – Planted 2 Maple & 2 Tulip
trees on hill.

November 1961
1 – Neterers & us at Mais for
supper. Raked leaves. Warm in 60s.
2 – Clear & warm 75º high,
probably a record. Leaves falling fast. It was a heat record.
3 – Raining & colder. Temp hit a
new low of near 25. Froze ¼ inch ice on tank. Rained ½ inch.
4 – Warmer, near 50. Parmalees came
up in p.m. Dave & Annetta also. They stayed all night. Leaves nearly all
down.
5 – Dave put on my snow tires. They
left about 12. Clouding & around 40º. Still haven't fed any hay or grain.
6 – Still cold. Mom used dryer.
7 – Temp in low 40s, near 30 at
night. Ate last of muskmelons.
8 – Temp same. Dropped below 30 at
night. Had 1st snow flurries. None stuck.
9 – Started to wean colts. Fed some
hay & grain first time. Ice on tank about 3/8 inch.
10 – Warmer today. In 40s. Went
shopping. Bright.
11 – Warm, over 60s. Picked up bath
tub at Murphys. Frank helped. Purdue beat Michigan State 7-6. Dads Day.
12 – Cloudy but still warm in 50s.
Home alone all day.

more leaves.
14 – Still mild. Rain. Low around
40º. Total rain for week about 1 inch.

day. Started feeding ponies hay twice a day.

19 – Spitting snow all day. None
stayed. Wayne's came about 10:30 in a new '62 Plymouth. Dave & Annetta came
along. Left about 5 p.m. Had good visit. Temp over 40º.
20 – A little ice in tank. Cloudy,
in high 30s all day.
21 – Cleaned gutters. Picked up 2
bushels corn in Manning's field. Temp in 40s.
22 – Drippy rain about all day.
About 40º. Mom baking pies.
23 – Thanksgiving. Cloudy, misty
& mild. Temp in 40s. Went to Milly's for dinner. Mary & Jack there too.
24 – Went shopping. Still warm. Sun
shining bright. Picked up more corn & raked more leaves.
25 – Warmer, high 56º. Clear. Vern
& Genevieve stopped in. Ohio won over Michigan 50-20. Purdue won.
26 – Jack & Evelyn stopped by
with brother Alex on way from Illinois. Only stayed an hour & half. He is
failing a lot. Was a real warm over 50 day.
27 – Real windy & cooler about
35º. Picked up some corn & more leaves.
28 – Colder 28º, raised to 32º.

December 1961
1 – Went shopping. Clear day in 40s.

2 – Real warm & clear. Over 50º.
Watched Army-Navy game.
3 – Went to Milly's for dinner.

4 – Rained most all day, but temp
set a new high 64º Chicago, about 58 here.
5 – Colder, about 35º. Sunny. Went
to Cass for lunch & shopped.
6 – Picked up corn. Still nice
weather. Supposed to be colder.
7 – Trying to snow. Picked up load
of corn. Temp in high 20s. Snow coming down hard tonight. First real snow of
year. Below 20 at night.
8 – Had first snow about 1 inch.
Went shopping & to Dr. Blood pressure 155/90, weight 161. Higher. Roads
pretty clear. Dropped below 20 again.
9 – Haven pumped our dry well 1st
time in 13 years. Relieved sink immediately. Temp in high 20s.
10 – Snowing some. Milly & Eldon
here for dinner. Temp about 30º. Donna called about 7 for Mom's Birthday.
11 – Still cold under 30 high.
12 – Neterers had us & Mais for
supper. Temp dropping & snowing. Shut ponies in 1st time.
13 – Sunny, but temp dropped to
about 11 above in a.m. Went up just over 20º. First real cold snap.
14 – High 32, low 11º. Clear.
Warmer.
15 – Temp 29. Lake started to freeze
over, 1st time. Out about 100 ft. Sunny & clear.
16 – Temp 34-16. Sunny. Watched
football.
17 – Slow drizzly freezing rain.
Pavement slick. Didn't go to get papers. Temp right at 30-31 all day. Major
left today. Did not return. Can't understand it. Lake partly frozen, theory is
that he went in.
18 – Temp still at 30. Can't find
Major nowhere. We miss him a lot.
19 – More snow, still ice under. We
took Mais to South Bend. Otto's sister died. We went by way of 119-112. Got
stuck on hill coming home. Bing help me out.
20 – Temp still holding around
28-30.
21 – Some snow today. Temp 35-25.
Hauled 24 loads manure out of barn 1st time.
22 – Still 32-24. Went shopping.
Roads clear.
23 – Snowed in night & all
morning. About 4 inches. Plowed in p.m. Temp between 25-30. Neterers & us
at Mais for supper. Cleared.
24 – Temp 20 this morning. Bright
& sunny 20-25. Left at 10 a.m. Went to Milly's. Ate lunch & rode with
them to Wayne's. Arrived about 4:30. Roads clear. Hammond had over 10 inches.
We had 4 or 5, South Bend about 3.
25 – Temp in Hammond 5 above at 8.
Went up to 30. Had big dinner & Christmas. Came home about 4. Arrived here
at 7:30. No more snow.
26 – Clear, temp 20-40. Thawed some.
27 – Snowed some, temp dropped in
night to 11 above.
28 – Temp. 11 low. High about 15.
Clear.
29 – Temp 0º at 8 p.m., raised to 10
in night. High about 12º. Did not go shopping. Visited Mais in p.m.
30 – Wayne's came up about 2:30 for
3 hours. Ate lunch in their cottage. John & Diane came along. Don fixed our
T.V. Took 4 tubes & $16.00. Temp 8º - 15º. Lake freezing again.
31 – Went to Jones. Got a few
groceries. Snow about 4 to 5 inches. Temp 12 – 15.
