1961

January 1961
            1 – Kids came up about 1 p.m. also Milly's. Had ham dinner for 12. Kids had big time skating. Left about 9 p.m. Temp in 20's.
            2 – Rose Bowl parade. Temp here over 30º. Home alone.
            3 – Temp in 20's. Low 15.
            4 – Low 10 above, high 25º.
            5 – Low 10 º, high 40. Thawing. Got hair cut.
            7 – Started snowing again. Colder.
            8 – Still snowing & roads covered about 1½ inch. Stayed home. Mais here for dinner.
            9 – Temp dropped to 15 above, raised to 20.
            10 – Temp hit 40 & moderating. Saw "Tribute to a Patriot," life of Ike.
            11 – Temp hit 44 today, thawing. Hauled several loads of manure.
            12 – Record of 46º. Bright & thawing fast. Mais down to watch TV.
            13 – High 52. Went shopping. Ate lunch here.
            14 – Still warm & nice.
            15 – Went to Milly's to pick up oranges & fruit from Tola & Marie. Temp near 40.
            16 – Temp in 30's.
            17 – Cloudy & 42º. Getting colder.
            18 – Fair & warmer. Eva, Mildred & Daisy went to Home Ec at Harveys.
            19 – Ike's last day as President. Snowing in Washington. Temp falling.
            20 – Took car for grease & oil change 7269 miles. Reverse gear adjusted. More snow & temp in 20's. Inauguration Day in Washington. Jack Kennedy new President.
            21 – Temp 10 above in morning. High 24º. Dropping in night.
            22 – Zero at 8 a.m., rising to 20º above. More snow, total about 3 inches. Home all day.
            23 – Zero at 8 a.m., high 15º above. Checked on Dryer. Service $5.00. Cold in Florida, in 20's.
            24 – Temp 10 above a.m., high about 15. Dropping again at night. Clear. More snow in night. About 5-6 inches.
            25 – About 7 below at 8 a.m., went up to 15.
            26 – Low 7 above. High 20. Have about 5 inches of snow on level. Got 239 gallons of oil.
            27 – Went shopping. Temp 12 above. High about 22º.
            28 – Temp 15º. Windy. Snowed a little, high near 30.
            29 – Temp about 16, high about 25º. Home all day. 5 or 6 inches snow all over.
            30 – Low 17, high about 24. Spread some manure.
            31 – Low 18º, warming. High 25.
           
February 1961
            1 – Low 15º. Cold wind. High 25º.
            2 – 3 below this morning. High 15º. Cold wind blowing, but clear. Got hair cut.
            3 – Had more snow about 3 inches. Went shopping. Not too cold.
            4 – Temp between 10 & 25.
            5 – Went to Mishawaka. Milly & Eldon took us out to dinner. Temp went over 30.
            6 – 66 years old today. Temp went to 38º. Mais & Neterers surprised me with cake, jello in evening.
            7 – Temp about 20 in morning, went to 40. Snow melting fast.
            8 – Just 20º at 8 a.m. Sun shining. High 40º melting.
            9 – Temp in night hit 12, wind changed & it was 25 by sun up. High over 40.
            10 – Foggy this a.m., temp about 25º. High 42º. Went shopping.
            11 – Temp 20 low, about 38 high.
            12 – Fog this morning. Kids came up, arrived 11:30. Low about 30, high 42. Cloudy.
            13 – Low about 30º, high 52º. Snow running like a river. Daisy had birthday dinner for Mildred.
            14 – Still thawing, low 28, high 42. Got dog & car license today. Helped Frank on trees 1½ hour.
            15 – Low 30, high 42. Clear, windy. Helped Frank ½ hour. Snow all gone.
            16 – Low 25º. Cloudy. High 40º. Went to B.P. at Jones. Cleared. Windy. [Usually B.P means blood pressure.]
            17 – Foggy & rainy. Low 40, high 52. Worked for Frank 1½ hour. First rain since November.
            18 – Foggy & rain. Cleared in p.m. Temp 40 low, high 64º. Worked 2½ hours. Went to Republican Caucus. Record since 1877 [assuming high temp].
            19 – Low 24, high 30. Windy. Home all day.
            20 – Low 18º, high 38 or 40. Clear. Went to Cass with Mais. Had lunch in Cass. Helped Frank 1½ hours.
            21 – Low 28, high 50º. Clear. Helped Frank 1 hour.
            22 – Low 30, high 52. Some rain. Washed car & hauled manure.
            23 – 45 this morning. Raining. High 58. Worked 1½ hours. Ground all clear.
            24 – Low 30º. Foggy. High 40.
            25 – About 5 inches of snow in night (wet & heavy). Still snowing. Temp low 30º. Most snow of year, 6-8 inches with blizzard.
            26 – Clearing. Low 30, high 40º. Melting. Mais here for dinner & evening.
            27 – Low 30, high 43º. Clear. 48º at barn. Snow melting fast. Worked 1½ hours.
            28 – Low 28º, high 40 & above. Clear & thawing. Worked 1½ hours.

March 1961
            1 – Temp 28º, high 48º clear & thawing. Worked 1 hour. Got 187 gallons oil.
            2 – Low 32, high 62º. Clear & windy. Went to Jones. Got set & hair cut. Snow near gone.
            3 – Went to Dr. Blood pressure 168, weight 163. Good. Got prescription filled again. Warm about 60. Finished burning brush. Put in 15 hours.
            4 – Light rain most of day. Temp over 40. Snow all gone. Lake opening up fast.
            5 – Went to Milly's for dinner. Cloudy & about 35º.
            6 – Saw first robins. Low 45º.
            7 – Temp went to 68º. Lake went out, but dropped to 45 by night.
            8 – Temp 30º all day. Otto & I put Pinechrome on cottage. Finished in one day.
            9 – Temp dropped to 25, light snow in night. Wind of 50 miles per hour.
            10 – Temp between 30 & 40.
            11 – Temp about the same. Hi, low 40's. Elkhart lost to Berne 66-62 in Semi Finals. Kokomo beat Berne 73-63.
            12 – Went to Mary's this p.m., temp low 40's, dropped to 20 in night.
            13 – Raining. Around 40º.
            14 – Low in 20's, high 42º. Some rain. Lux came back today. Showed slides at Neterers.
            15 – Bright & sunny. Low 30º. High 40.
            16 – Mild & cool between 20 & 30.
            17 – Cold 15º low, high 32. Windy. Went shopping, also picked up Hormones at Cass $8.00. Helped Frank an hour. Lake froze a little, but melted.
            18 – Low 20º, high 34. Raining. Frank moved shack [might refer to Maple syrup project].
            19 – Some rain. High 42. Eldon & Milly here for dinner. Cleared up in p.m.
            20 – First day of Spring. Temp low 25º. High over 50. Clear & nice. Mrs. Ball raked leaves.
            21 – Low 36, high 48º. Some rain. Stayed inside all day.
            22 – Eva went to Home Ec. Still a little wet, warming. Went to Farm Bureau for feed & seed.
            23 – Vern & Genevieve stopped by, was cloudy. Got stuck in gate.
            24 – Went shopping. High 45, low 30.
            25 – High 55, low about 40. Helped Frank. Dropped 8 trees.
            26 – Warmest day of year since November 14, over 70º. Went to Milly's.
            27 – Low 50, high 71º. Clear & windy.
            28 – Getting cooler. High 53º.
            29 – Windy & cool. Low 30, high 35.
            30 – Low 20º, high 48º. Got hair cut. Sunny, but cool.
            31 – Went shopping. Low 20's, high in low 40's.
           
April 1961
            1 – Temp between 20 & 40. Light snow at night.
            2 – Ground covered with snow, low 25º high 45º. Snow melted. Easter Sunday. Went to Church with Milly's & was there for dinner. Sunny.
            3 – Sunny & windy. Temp 22 low, high 48º. Voted for township & county.
            4 – Temp low 34 high 50º. Clear. Put up Martin bird house.
            5 – Low 35 high 50. Some rain & P.C. [Rex suggested P.C. must mean partly cloudy. This is the 1st it appeared, but is used frequently from this point on.]
            6 – Low 35, high 42º. Cloudy.
            7 – Low 35º, high in 40's. P.C.
            8 – Wayne's opened cottage. Nice day. High 45º. Milly & Eldon here too. Frank plowed garden. Dave put part on dryer.
            9 – Rained & snowed all day. None stayed on ground. Temp about 34º.
            10 – Cloudy & cool. High 42. Made hot box out of windows.
            11 – Clear & warmer, about 62º. Planted tomatoes, cabbage & flower seeds in hot box.
            12 – Rained some.
            13 – Went to beauty parlor. Ate lunch at Mais & drove them to South Bend. Nice day near 60. Ate supper with Milly's. Planted more tomatoes .
            14 – Went shopping. Tilled about 10 ft. of garden. Planted 1st row peas, row of set onion, radishes & lettuce. High 62º, low 35º.
            15 – Pretty good day. Temp 62. Done some tilling also Frank did his. Started to rain.
            16 – Woke up to several inches of snow. Snowed all day & drifted, total about 9 inches. Worst snow of year. Record.
            17 – Snow over. Lots of drifts. Warmed up to 40 & half of snow melted. Sun came out. C.B. [?]
            18 – Warmed up to 60º. Most of snow gone. Sunny & cloudy.
            19 – Real nice day, over 60. Bright. Only patches of snow where it drifted.
            20 – Mild & warm. Temp high 60's. Snow all gone.
            21 – First real spring-like day, 55º in morning. High over 60. Clear (Got 50 lbs. salt). Rained 1¼ inches. Could go in shirt sleeves. C.B.
            22 – Rained ¼ inch. Warm, over 60.
            23 – Nice balmy day, partly sunny. Temp over 70. Some rain at night ¼ inch. Grass growing nice now, first time. C.B.
            24 – Plowed strips in pasture. Big rain & thunderstorm in night. Total rain 1¾ inches. Temp hit 72º.
            25 – Cooler, 45 in a.m., light rain, about .3 inch.
            26 – Bob Brindle came to see us. Plans to go to Colorado. Temp in 50's but nice.

            27 – Honey Bee had male colt last night. Nice colt, solid gray. Low 45º, high 62º. Sunny but cool. Got hair cut.

            28 – Rained all morning. Windy in p.m. Waves high. Temp in 50's.
            29 – Let mare & colt out. He was real frisky. Ponies went nuts. Nice day, near 60.
            30 – Bright & sunny. Temp over 60º. Home alone all day. Pony doing fine.

May 1961
            1 – Clear & windy. Temp around 50º. Sowed alfalfa in field. Planted Heath. Noticed 1st peas coming through, after 2 weeks.
            2 – Cool & windy morning 32º, high 50º. Sun out all day.
            3 – Low 32º, high 60º. Clear. Sprayed trees 2nd time.
            4 – Best day this spring, low 32 high 72º. Clear. Planted 2nd row peas, row of beans, carrots, beets & 2 hills cucumbers.
            5 – Nice day in 60's. First Astronaut Commander Shepard went up 150-300 miles in Space. Big success.
            6 – Real warm in 70's. Big storm {½ inch) at night with hail. Ponies scared frantic.
            7 – Kids surprised us by coming about 12. Milly & Eldon here. Temp. hit 80º. Sugar's colt (male) arrived about 10:30 a.m. I was at birth. Doing fine.

            13 – Temp 85º, low 60. Clear & cooler in 50's, .3 inch rain in night & early morning. Trees gradually getting greener (CB in heat). Clear. Painted.
            14 – Mothers Day. Went to Milly's. Warm in 80's. Donna called in evening. They are fine.
            15 – Fair, windy & cooler. In 70's. Dropped to 40 at night. Rained some. Painted all day. SB
            16 – Cool about 58º. Clear. Cut grass first time, also sprayed blossoms.
            17 – Painted. Temp in 60's.
            18 – Small rain in night. Cool. Fixed Ball's screens. Temp 65º.
            19 – Clear & some warmer in 60's. Went shopping & painted. 2nd peas & beans coming up. Got suit cleaned 1st time. Mom got new dress.
            20 – Light rain. Got hair cut at Cass. Vern Balls out awhile.
            21 – Went to Hammond & back same day. Had Church Mortgage burning. Dr. Martin preached. Saw all old friends & dinner at Teibels. Temp in 60's.
            22 – Planted musk melons, 2nd cucumbers, glads & sunflowers. Also squash. Nice clear day in 60's. Painted some more.
            23 – Clear & warmer. 40 low 65º high. Stirred flower garden.
            24 – Warm 78º. Mom got hair set.
            25 – Painted. Started to rain in p.m., nice easy rain. Planted 2 rows Little Midget corn. Over 70, dropped to 50.
            26 – Went shopping. Painted this p.m. Temp dropped from 80 to 60 in 20 minutes. Light rain. Temp dropping. Cold blast from North.
            27 – Bred Honey Bee. Frost this morning, temp 30º. Froze beans & cucumbers. Replanted beans. Also planted small annual flower seeds.
            28 – Nice day, over 70º. Lots of people out today.
            29 – Windy & clear, temp 70º. Planted dahlias & glads. No paint.
            30 – Quiet Memorial Day, but bright & sunny. Temp 73º. Home alone. Cut grass & set out 12 early tomatoes, 35¢ per dozen.
            31 – Painted 'til it rained about 10:30. Total about ½ inch, first rain in 2 weeks. Temp about 68º.
           
June 1961
            1 – Big rain storm, 1 inch. Warmer. Tilled rest of garden ahead of rain.
            2 – Went shopping. Nice day.
            3 – Went to David's wedding. Nice day. Nice wedding. Stayed all night with Bake's.

            5 – Went to East Chicago Rotary Club. Stopped to see Bernard. Arrived home at 4:30. Warm about 86º. Major & ponies O.K.
            6 – Got everything ready to plant tomatoes. Set out 65 plants & 35 cabbage. Also planted row of peas, onions, carrots & more melons, & 2 rows (3rd planting) corn. Hot 90º high. David & Annetta over to see us.
            7 – Cleaned up stable. Rained ½ inch in night. Cooler.
            8 – More rain about ½ inch, in 70's. Set out 10 pepper plants.
            9 – Went shopping. Went to see Prowitt & Mallow.
            10 – Julie brought 4 kids from Hammond. Rained in a.m. .2 inch. Clear p.m., painted Ball's pier. Major & I went in Lake. Water 65º.
            11 – High in 80's. Wayne's came also Milly & Eldon. Ate here.
            12 – Warmest day, near 90 here. Warm at night. Cultivated & voted [or roted? for roto-tilled?]. Helped Wayne. Went swimming.
            13 – Temp still high, but big storm nearly 1 inch & temp dropped below 70. Set out broccoli & eggplant. Planted 2 rows 4th planting corn, "Tendertouch."
            14 – Cool in 60's. Helped Wayne & painted roof at Ball's.
            15 – Got hair cut & painted Ball chairs. Still cool in 60's.
            16 – Below 50 this morning. Went shopping. James went along. Needed fire. Had bean dinner & wieners at night at Wayne's.
            17 – Still cool, in 60's. Had fire. Warming up, near 80. Went to Milly's for wiener roast. Balls out, first time all night.
            18 – Real nice day. About 80º.
            19 – Cedric got out. Went to Montadin's. Fixed fence. Warm, over 80. Rained this evening, nice rain .8 inch.
            20 – Cool, set out plants. About 64º.
            21 – Went to see about hay. Cleaned up basement. Warmer in 70's.
            22 – Dropped to 52º. Rained .4 inch in evening. Planted 5th 3 rows of corn Iochief.
            23 – Cool, about 50º. Sprinkling. Went shopping.
            24 – Finished Ball's small pier. Small rain. Wayne's family came, except James. Cool in 60's. Doris Harvey killed. Picked 4 boxes of strawberries.
            25 – Had ponies hoofs clipped $5.00. Had 1st mess of peas. Warmer, 68º.
            26 – Went to funeral parlor. Warmed up to 80º. Cultivated garden.
            27 – Went over entire garden with cultivator. Nice day about 80º. Got Vit. Excelon.
            28 – Temp about 84º. Warm. Marj. brought Hester & Julius to see us. Sold Sundance in grain exchange.
            29 – High about 85º here, 89 in South Bend. Real warm. Lake 68º.
            30 – Went shopping alone. Still warm. Balls came out to stay week end.
           
July 1961
            1 – Wayne's came at 10 a.m. Still warm. Lake 72º.
            2 – Dean & Leana came. Rented Paulson cottage for 7/16. All ate at Wayne's. Cool & windy. Got fishing license & went fishing with Dean. Caught about 18.
            3 – All picked strawberries. Dean left about 8 p.m. Wayne worked & came back.
            4 – Real nice day, about 70º. Cool at night. Had Community Fireworks Display. Wayne's left at 10:15 p.m.
            5 – Light rain only. Very dry. Cool in 60's.
            6 – Rode Cedric today. Gave Neterers & Mais mess of peas.
            7 – Went shopping. Nice day, in 70's. Went to dump. Went to Milly's for supper. Cool.
            8 – Kids came late. Milly & Eldon here for supper. Ate here. Picked last box strawberries.
            9 – Nice day but cool wind blew. Around 70º. Jacksons & Malones here. Annetta's folks came with David to Wayne's.
            10 – Temp 82º high. Cultivated & set up grass cutter. Cut weeds.
            11 – Cut more grass. Warm in 80's. No rain. Watched All-Star Game. Nats. won 5-4 in 10th at San Francisco.
            12 – Temp in low 80's. Breeze. Uncle Clyde's & Don's came over. Don rode Cedric. Got my load of 150 bales hay. Had last mess of peas.
            13 – Nice weather, but no rain. Temp near 80. Sprinkled garden. Barn pump quit, waterlogged.
            14 – Went shopping. Good rain in Elkhart, only about .1" here. Wayne's came about 7:30 p.m.
            15 – Picked 2 boxes black & 2 red raspberries this morning. First of season.
            16 – Rained first real shower since June 22nd, about .2 inches. Dean's came for 1 week in Paulson's. Mabel came too.
            17 – Nice day, all went cherry picking, got good red cherries & last of black (small) ones. 1 week too late.
            18 – Pot luck at Mais. A good big thundershower in p.m., about 1 inch. Long needed.. Temp dropped 15º.
            19 – Cloudy in a.m. We had fish fry at Dean's over 100 fish. Temp 78º.
            20 – Temp around 80, low 60. Wayne came & took Nancy & James back. Had septic tank pumped, $40.00. First time.
            21 – Went shopping. Clyde's came with Leah. Rained about .7 inch. Mabel left for Alex's by bus at Dowagiac.
            22 – Wayne's came at 1:30. Had dance at Yacht Club. Dean's all at Wayne's for supper.
            23 – Rained off & on all day, about .2 inch. Dean's left for Bass Lake. Wayne's went home. Warm.
            24 – More rain about .4 inch. About 78º.
            25 – Went to Joe Kucera's funeral at Lockport, trip 330 miles. Stopped at Milly's for supper. Nice day, in 70's.
            26 – Picked beans. Milly's & Mary came up this evening.
            27 – Beautiful day, low 80's. Went to Jones.
            28 – Penny had a spotted filly in night, about 331 days. Rained .2 inch.
            29 – Very warm today in 80's. Wayne's came about 11:30. Rained in night.
            30 – Showered all day, about .2 inch. Wayne's left early. Warm & humid. Rained .1 inch in night. Picked 3 cucumbers, first of year.
            31 – Warm & humid. Painted south end.

August 1961
            1 – More rain, about .4 inch. Went to Cass & cleaned gutters. Cut weeds. In 70's.
            2 – Painted. Cooler.
            3 – Painted gutters & more house. Verda & Ernie dropped in for lunch.
            4 – Rained in a.m. Painted in p.m. Dave & Annetta came up this evening.
            5 – Painted in morning. Started to rain & rained 1.2 inches before stopping. Wayne's came at 2:30. Went to Yacht Club Pot Luck.
            6 – Cool & clear. No rain. Had Boat Parade at 4 p.m. Won 2nd Humorous. Bred P.

            7 – Painted. Mild & warm.
            8 – Painted trim & some of 2nd coat. Had 1st sweet corn.
            9 – Painted on 2nd coat. Warm.
            10 – Got hair cut & finished front 2nd. Had Mais & Neterers in for ice cream, Daisy's Birthday. Rained .2 inch.
            11 – Went shopping & had more rain, 1½ in. Had corn & cabbage. Temp 70s.
            12 – Painted steps & porches. Wayne's came for 3 weeks. Milly & Eldon here.
            13 – 3 boat races today. Beautiful day. Rained in evening about .2 inch.
            14 – Helen & Bill Hines here for lunch. We were also surprised when Chas. & Marian Burke came. Nice day.
            15 – Wayne & I started to build boat port. Warm & nice.
            16 – Went to Vandalia for material. Another gorgeous day. Temp 80º.
            17 – Having lots of corn & tomatoes.
            18 – Went shopping alone.
            19 – Whitesell's came today.
            20 – Collet's came today to Paulson cottage. Lake temp 74º.
            21 – Nice day.
            22 – Still nice day in 70's.
            23 – Rained nearly all day over 1 inch. Honey Bee came in heat.
            24 – Rained about .4 inch. Got word Marie had passed away. Funeral Saturday. Went to Mary's & Clyde's.
            25 – Diane & Mary went to Elkhart with me.
            26 – Dave & Annette came. Had Watermelon Festival at Yacht Club. Marie buried at 2 p.m. at Ft. Pierce.
            27 – Nancy had Wheelers, Pritchetts, Alts, Brushes & Loshes up for pot luck. Nice day & big time.
            28 – Finished Boat Port today. Warm, about 83º.
            29 – Jim & Pansy stopped on way to Florida. They look real good. We had cook out with Wayne's. In low 80's. Wayne & I worked on corral.
            30 – Jim's left at 7:30. We took them to route 15 at Bristol. Warmer. Finished corral.
            31 – Wayne's & us went to see Deer Forest. Took lunch. Warm.

September 1961
            1 – Rained ¾ inch. Went shopping. Had cook-out tonight with Neterers & McCrearys. Warm in 80s.
            2 – Went to Jones Dinner with Frank's. Warm.
            3 – Bake's, Bev's, Milly's & Dean's here. We got our dinner caught in a downpour about ¾ inch. George & Doris came.
            4 – Labor Day. Real warm day. Humid. Everyone swimming & skiing. Lake 72º.
            5 – Bev & Tony left today. Still hot & sticky. Just over 80.
            6 – Warm & humid. Canned 10 quarts tomato juice.
            7 – Went to Jones for haircut & set. Warm & humid, low 80s. Caulked windows. Went to see Mary & Jack.
            8 – Had check up. Blood pressure 155-90, weight 158 lbs. Warm & humid, about 80º. Lake temp 74.
            9 – Went to Mary's for supper. Very warm & humid. Canned 16 quarts juice.
            10 – Home all day alone. Warm in 80s. Humidity high. Water 75º.
            11 – Still warm & close. Thunder storm late p.m. ½ inch. Turned cooler.
            12 – Hot & humid.
            13 – Canned 12 quarts whole tomatoes. Big rain & storm in night.
            14 – Still drizzling, total of 1 inch. Cooler. Went to Milly's for supper. Went swimming.
            15 – Mais went shopping with us. Cut all grass. Cooler.
            16 – Wayne's couldn't come up. Nice day, sunny & 65º high.
            17 – Still sunny, high 70º. No one here today. Had fried perch.
            18 – Still clear. Temp 75º. Started finishing 2nd coat. Went to Mais for supper. Went swimming.
            19 – Clear & 70º. Finished painting balance of house, total 8 gallons, 2 coats. Have ½ gallon left.
            20 – Painted deck & concrete steps. Still warm & nice.
            21 – Went to hairdresser. Got car greased & oil changed at Jones. Mais went with us to Centerville Fair. Saw harness races & evening Stage Show. Warm & nice all day.
            22 – Mom & I went shopping. Went to Neterers for ice cream, Otto's Birthday. Dave & Annetta came up.
            23 – Wayne's came in p.m. Took in boats & stored them in port. Started to rain about 6 p.m. Rained all night.
            24 – Still raining in showers. Wayne's left about 2:30.
            25 – Still raining. Total 2.75 inches since Friday. Gave Daisy tomatoes. Turning cooler 60º at 5p.m. Had another ½ inch rain.
            26 – Painted all house windows. Otto helped on 4. Temp low 60s.
            27 – Painted barn gates & inside house doors & casings. Temp dropping. Mrs. Stolte passed away today [former boss's wife].
            28 – Temp dropping. Frost predicted. Had light white frost, temp about 35º.
            29 – First light frost. Not much damage. Cedric got out, was at Montondas all day. Went shopping. Warming up.
            30 – Fairly nice day. Rained in night about ¾ inch.
           
October 1961
            1 – Ovy Asher's came up in p.m. Left at 5:30.
            2 – Pretty good wash day. In 60's. Cool at night.
            3 – Cedric out again. Over at Montandans. Kept him in corral at night.
            4 – Fair & warm in 60s. Yankees won 1st game from Cincinnati 2-0. Whitey Ford.
            5 – Summer day, 75º. Cincinnati won 6-2, Jay & Terry. Leaves turning slowly.
            6 – Went shopping alone. Mom went to Brunch at Coans. Fine day. Warm.
            7 – Wayne's came at 11:30. Beautiful day in 70s. Cedric got out again. Yanks won 3-2.
            8 – Rode ponies & took in pier. Lovely weather. Yanks won 7-0.
            9 – Put away garden machinery. Sowed some Timothy & Rye grass. Warm. Yanks won series 13-5 – 5 games.
            10 - 75º again today. Warm at night.
            11 – Slight sprinkle this a.m. Got 20 bushels oats at Mallos, value $14.00. High 75º again. Got word of Mrs. Stoltes death today.
            12 – Washed & polished car. Temp 75º again. Beautiful fall weather.
            13 – Raining all morning, about .8 inch. Wind rage at night, colder.
            14 – Cool & windy in night 40s. Pasture still good.
            15 – Still cool, but wind changed & temp went up in 50s. Home alone. John Jones dropped in from Elkhart.
            16 – Clear & warmer in 60s. Raked some leaves. Still eating melons.
            17 – Beautiful day, temps in low 70s.
            18 – Went to Farm Bureau trip, 3 farms. Left trailer at Mallos for corn. Nice day.
            19 – Rained all morning. Couldn't pick up corn.
            20 – Cooler today. Went shopping. Built fire for Wayne's. They came about 1:30 a.m. after Julie's rehearsal.
            21 – Went to wedding with Wayne's. All 5 grandchildren in Party. Temp about 48º. Got home about 7 p.m.
            22 – Cloudy 'til about noon. Sun came out & it was in 50's. Collet's came up. Wayne's closed cottage.
            23 – Walter & Helen came up in time for lunch & stayed 'til 4:30. Walter & I picked up corn, about 20 bushels, value $20.00. Rained late.
            24 – Bright & sunny. Over 50º.
            25 – Rained again .2 inch. Thunderstorm in p.m., rained .3 inch. Last of year.
            26 – Took Otto to Jones. Picked squash. No frost yet. Temp to 60s.
            27 – First killing frost about 30º for a few hours. Raised to 48º in day. Leaves about in full color.
            28 – Raining, but warm, about 70º. Went to Milly's for dinner.
            29 – Still cloudy. Leaves about in full color & starting to fall. Temp in 60s.
            30 – Planted 2 Maple & 2 Tulip trees on hill.
            31 – Sun came out bright & warm in 60s. Took several pictures. Raked leaves. Had 13 callers [Halloween trick-or-treaters].

November 1961
            1 – Neterers & us at Mais for supper. Raked leaves. Warm in 60s.
            2 – Clear & warm 75º high, probably a record. Leaves falling fast. It was a heat record.
            3 – Raining & colder. Temp hit a new low of near 25. Froze ¼ inch ice on tank. Rained ½ inch.
            4 – Warmer, near 50. Parmalees came up in p.m. Dave & Annetta also. They stayed all night. Leaves nearly all down.
            5 – Dave put on my snow tires. They left about 12. Clouding & around 40º. Still haven't fed any hay or grain.
            6 – Still cold. Mom used dryer.
            7 – Temp in low 40s, near 30 at night. Ate last of muskmelons.
            8 – Temp same. Dropped below 30 at night. Had 1st snow flurries. None stuck.
            9 – Started to wean colts. Fed some hay & grain first time. Ice on tank about 3/8 inch.
            10 – Warmer today. In 40s. Went shopping. Bright.
            11 – Warm, over 60s. Picked up bath tub at Murphys. Frank helped. Purdue beat Michigan State 7-6. Dads Day.
            12 – Cloudy but still warm in 50s. Home alone all day.
            13 – Partly cloudy. About 50º. Raked more leaves.
            14 – Still mild. Rain. Low around 40º. Total rain for week about 1 inch.
            15 – Cloudy & dull. Temp around 50º. Low in 40s.
            16 – Went to Jones. Got carbon took out of No. 6 plug, 75 cents. Mild.
            17 – Went shopping. Around 40 all day. Started feeding ponies hay twice a day.
            18 – Ground covered with snow, melted by 10 a.m. Temp in 40s. Helped John Ball on leaves.
            19 – Spitting snow all day. None stayed. Wayne's came about 10:30 in a new '62 Plymouth. Dave & Annetta came along. Left about 5 p.m. Had good visit. Temp over 40º.
            20 – A little ice in tank. Cloudy, in high 30s all day.
            21 – Cleaned gutters. Picked up 2 bushels corn in Manning's field. Temp in 40s.
            22 – Drippy rain about all day. About 40º. Mom baking pies.
            23 – Thanksgiving. Cloudy, misty & mild. Temp in 40s. Went to Milly's for dinner. Mary & Jack there too.
            24 – Went shopping. Still warm. Sun shining bright. Picked up more corn & raked more leaves.
            25 – Warmer, high 56º. Clear. Vern & Genevieve stopped in. Ohio won over Michigan 50-20. Purdue won.
            26 – Jack & Evelyn stopped by with brother Alex on way from Illinois. Only stayed an hour & half. He is failing a lot. Was a real warm over 50 day.
            27 – Real windy & cooler about 35º. Picked up some corn & more leaves.
            28 – Colder 28º, raised to 32º. Picked up more corn & leaves.
            29 – Warmer, high about 40º. Clear. Picked up more corn & leaves.
            30 – Eva got permanent $10.00. Picked up corn. Warm in 40s. Clear. Eva went to Tupperware party.
           
December 1961
            1 – Went shopping. Clear day in 40s. Picked up corn.
            2 – Real warm & clear. Over 50º. Watched Army-Navy game.
            3 – Went to Milly's for dinner. Cloudy, but around 50.
            4 – Rained most all day, but temp set a new high 64º Chicago, about 58 here.
            5 – Colder, about 35º. Sunny. Went to Cass for lunch & shopped.
            6 – Picked up corn. Still nice weather. Supposed to be colder.
            7 – Trying to snow. Picked up load of corn. Temp in high 20s. Snow coming down hard tonight. First real snow of year. Below 20 at night.
            8 – Had first snow about 1 inch. Went shopping & to Dr. Blood pressure 155/90, weight 161. Higher. Roads pretty clear. Dropped below 20 again.
            9 – Haven pumped our dry well 1st time in 13 years. Relieved sink immediately. Temp in high 20s.
            10 – Snowing some. Milly & Eldon here for dinner. Temp about 30º. Donna called about 7 for Mom's Birthday.
            11 – Still cold under 30 high.
            12 – Neterers had us & Mais for supper. Temp dropping & snowing. Shut ponies in 1st time.
            13 – Sunny, but temp dropped to about 11 above in a.m. Went up just over 20º. First real cold snap.
            14 – High 32, low 11º. Clear. Warmer.
            15 – Temp 29. Lake started to freeze over, 1st time. Out about 100 ft. Sunny & clear.
            16 – Temp 34-16. Sunny. Watched football.
            17 – Slow drizzly freezing rain. Pavement slick. Didn't go to get papers. Temp right at 30-31 all day. Major left today. Did not return. Can't understand it. Lake partly frozen, theory is that he went in.
            18 – Temp still at 30. Can't find Major nowhere. We miss him a lot.
            19 – More snow, still ice under. We took Mais to South Bend. Otto's sister died. We went by way of 119-112. Got stuck on hill coming home. Bing help me out.
            20 – Temp still holding around 28-30.
            21 – Some snow today. Temp 35-25. Hauled 24 loads manure out of barn 1st time.
            22 – Still 32-24. Went shopping. Roads clear.
            23 – Snowed in night & all morning. About 4 inches. Plowed in p.m. Temp between 25-30. Neterers & us at Mais for supper. Cleared.
            24 – Temp 20 this morning. Bright & sunny 20-25. Left at 10 a.m. Went to Milly's. Ate lunch & rode with them to Wayne's. Arrived about 4:30. Roads clear. Hammond had over 10 inches. We had 4 or 5, South Bend about 3.
            25 – Temp in Hammond 5 above at 8. Went up to 30. Had big dinner & Christmas. Came home about 4. Arrived here at 7:30. No more snow.
            26 – Clear, temp 20-40. Thawed some.
            27 – Snowed some, temp dropped in night to 11 above.
            28 – Temp. 11 low. High about 15. Clear.
            29 – Temp 0º at 8 p.m., raised to 10 in night. High about 12º. Did not go shopping. Visited Mais in p.m.
            30 – Wayne's came up about 2:30 for 3 hours. Ate lunch in their cottage. John & Diane came along. Don fixed our T.V. Took 4 tubes & $16.00. Temp 8º - 15º. Lake freezing again.
            31 – Went to Jones. Got a few groceries. Snow about 4 to 5 inches. Temp 12 – 15.
