1947

January 1947
            1 – First New Years I didn't have to go to a Plant. Home today. Wayne's here for dinner. Temp. about 25 & snowing. Illinois beat UCLA 45-14 in Rose Bowl. Went to Wayne's in evening.
            4 – Erma & Russell stayed here all night. They went to see Sonya Haines. Temp. dropped to 2 above tonight.
            5 – Went to Church. Was to Donna's for dinner. Still cold. Russell & Erma was at Wayne's for dinner.
            8 – Nancy's Birthday. Mom took most of dinner over for supper. Harbert's there.
            11 – Got hair cut. Snow nearly gone. Went to Wayne's tonight for lunch.
            12 – Went to Church & Sunday School. Donna's here for dinner. Went to see their new house. It is nearly done. Stopped to see Marj. & Bob.
            13 – Dedelow over to see me today. He is not working. Took him to lunch.
            14 – Got 4th Kaiser today. Grey. Warmer. Had NACA Board meeting tonight at Phil Smidts.
            15 – Took Eva to see Dr. Marcus. He found Fibroids in Uterus. Operation needed.
            16 – Went to see Louis Kish, he had gone to hospital in Chicago.
            17 – Got 3rd Frazer today. Lambs wool cream. Jones in to see me today.
            18 – Drove new Frazer home for week end. Got another blue Kaiser today, also a grey Frazer direct from Detroit.
            19 – Eva & I drove to LaGrange this p.m. Saw Lizzie's, Jean's & Tena's. Drove Frazer. Swell day. Temp over 50.
            20 – Men's class had pot luck at Church tonight. Had good time.
            24 – Had meeting of Publishing Committee of Church History tonight.
            25 – Worked until 3 p.m. Helped Farrell move some things. He used Marcus's truck.
            26 – Went to Church. Ate dinner. At 2 o'clock received call that Mother Kesler had stroke. We left immediately & found her fair. All the rest home.
            27 – Mother Kesler doing OK. We came home in p.m. Drove the Dodge Club Coupe.
            28 – Had monthly NACA Meeting. Drove the cream Frazer.
            29 – Snowing, sleeting & ice today & night. Real bad out. Power lines down.
            30 – Received telegram that Mother was worse. Wayne took us out. She is real bad. Eva stayed & Wayne & I came home. Weather better.
            31 – Getting pretty cold.

February 1947
            1 – Wayne, Nancy, kids & I went home. Snowing & getting colder. Grandma about the same.
            2 – Temp. hit zero this morning. Had dinner up home. Mom & Mamie to stay. We came home.
            3 – Ate dinner at Nancy's. Cold. Had appointment with Marvin.
            4 – Temp. about 2 below in early morning. Cold all day. Went to Chicago. Drove '41 DeSoto.
            5 – Supper at Nancy's. Went out to Donna's awhile. Still cold.
            6 – Temp about 2 below again. My Birthday. We went to Donna's for supper. Nancy & me. Had good time. Temp about 10 above.
            8 – Went out home this p.m. Drove Chev. 41, burnt one bearing. Bernard bro't out Dodge & I continued [on to Grandma Kesler's]. Everything about the same. Eva quite tired out.
            9 – Wayne's came out this a.m. All ate at Mother's house. Nancy drove home. Broke an oil line on Dodge. Got home O.K. Temp. about 5 above this morning.
            10 – Eva came to Mishawaka. Marie went to stay with Mom. All supper at Nancy's.
            11 – Had Board Meeting at Smidts. Drove cream job.
            12 – Drove to Mishawaka in cream Frazer to pick up Eva. Came back same day. Weather pretty cold.
            16 – Left for home in 41 Chevrolet. Bob & Marj. Went along. Very icy & hard driving. Ate dinner in Plymouth. Mother about the same. Eva stayed .Roads better coming home.
            17 – Bernard to Ft. Wayne for 2 days. Sold Chev. Club Coupe & Pontiac. Took in Ford & Packard. To Wayne's for supper.
            18 – Stayed over to close deals.
            19 – Had meeting of Publishing Committee at Church. Drove blue Frazer without heater.
            20 – Temp. keeps pretty cold. Ate at Nancy's.
            21 – Ate at Nancy's. Went to see Donna's. Went to show to see Margie. First show in weeks.
            22 – Got heater in Frazer. Drove out home. Mother was moved up home & Eva, Mabel & I sat up tonight. Cold.
            23 – Estus & Chris all there today. Cold & blowing. Brought Eva home with me. Heater worked good. Stopped at Donna's for supper. Wayne's there.
            24 – Stayed home tonight. Mom bothered with lame back.
            25 – Had NACA meeting at Smidts. Good meeting. About 65 present. Getting warmer.
            26 – Took Grandma to Nursing Home in Warsaw.
           
March 1947
            1 – Drove blue Frazer to Mishawaka. Mamie's birthday. Had nice supper. Heavy snow in night. Washington beat Hammond 42-37 to win Sectional.
            2 – Took Chris & Mamie to see Mother at Warsaw. Roads snowy & ice. Came home via Mishawaka. Mother doing OK.
            8 – At office today. Washington beat Emerson to win Regional.
            9 – Went to Church. First time since January 26th on account of Mother Kesler's illness. Wayne drove. Had '41 Plymouth. Ate dinner at Plymouth.
            12 – Annual Stay of NACA at Lake Hills. Took Bernard. Had nice party.
            15 – Another Birthday. Went to Donna's in evening & ate supper at Wayne's. Couldn't get together on account of chicken pox. Washington won Semi Finals. Beat Logansport 52 -28. Beat South Bend 42-37.
            16 – Went to Church & drove to Warsaw this p.m. Nancy, Wayne & kids went along. Ate dinner at Valpo. Grandma some better. Chris's there. Drove cream Frazer.
            17 – Took Eva to Franklin Blvd. Hospital [Chicago] this p.m. Dr. Marcus to operate Wednesday or Friday. Bought Hollywood bed at Nelson Bros. $113.50.
            18 – Wayne gave pint of blood for Mom. Weather getting nice. I came up to hospital.
            19 – Wayne & I came to see Mom at Hospital. She had blood transfusion today.
            20 – Came to hospital tonight. Eva feeling fine & ready for tomorrow's ordeal. Fritz started on kitchen today.
            21 – Eva operated on at 8 a.m. On table 2 hours, 10 minutes. Operation success so far. First day of spring, snowing & melting fast.
            22 – Worked 'til noon. Wayne & Nancy went to hospital this evening. Eva getting on OK. Took several steps today. New technique.
            23 – Went to Church. Ate dinner at Nancy's & lunch at Donna's. They went with me to see Mom. She is having bad pains & cough.
            24 – Raining all day, turned in to bad blizzard at 4 o'clock, worst of year. Traffic tied up. Couldn't go to hospital. Power & heat off in most all Hammond. Went to show at Calumet.
            25 – Went to hospital this p.m. Took Marge along. Eva has walked every day. Weather cleared up some. Had NACA meeting at Phil Smidts. Wayne's went to hospital tonight.
            26 – Went to hospital. Eva doing nicely. Still bothered with cough.
            27 – To hospital again tonight.
            28 – Still going to hospital. Eva getting along well. Eating good.
            29 – Wayne & Nancy went to hospital again tonight with me. Mom doing fine.
            30 – Palm Sunday. Went to Church & to Wayne's for dinner. Went back to communion today & to hospital tonight.
            31 – Eva released today at 1:30. Got home about 3:30. Was glad to get home. Kids all over this evening. Temp went to 55º.

April 1947
            1 – Mabel & Chris came up on South Shore to stay with Eva. She has to stay in bed 4 days.
            2 – Nancy's over tonight awhile. Farrell bought a new used Studebaker.
            3 – Dr. & Mrs. Smith called. Also Bob & Marj.
            4 – Good Friday. Went to Church from 12 to 3. Donna's over this evening. Getting warmer.
            22 – Big day in NACA luncheon in Gary with National Secretary. Meeting at Phil Smidts in evening.
            23 – Lulu & Devoy here for supper on returning from South-west. Look good. Warm today. About 73.
            24 – Big Supper at Church in connection with Anniversary. Eva didn't go.
            27 – Went to Church & out to see Grandma. Ate at Valpo. Sunny but cool. Drove '46 Nash. Saw Loyd also. Mother doing about same. [Not positive, but I believe this Loyd was the son of Linnie (Fish) & Milton Kesler. Linnie was Mary (Fish) Kesler's sister. Eva had a brother named Loyd Russell Kesler, but he lived in California while Eva's cousin Loyd lived in Kosciusko County, which includes Warsaw.]
           
May 1947
            3 – Nice day but cool. Went to locker.
            4 – Went to Church & Nancy's for dinner. Cool. Unusual Spring. Haven't had but one or two warm days. Helped preside at Church.
            5 – Bought Eva new tan coat ($46.00) & wheatstraw hat. Also lace table cloth for Wayne & Nancy's anniversary. Went to Dr. Marcus. Eva doing O.K.
            6 – Dan & Tena here all night. Leaving soon for Montana. Raining & cold. Went to Donnas & Wayne's.
            7 – Dan & Tena left this morning to visit folks in Indiana.
            8  Temp. dropped to 30.9º in night. Coldest May 8th of record. Went to luncheon at Indiana Hotel.
            9 – Still cold. High 44, low 33.
            10 – Got Eva blouse & black slip also brown shoes at Lynn's.
            11 – Mothers Day. Drove to Warsaw this a.m. Virgene went with us. Ate dinner at Gerald's & saw Mother, also Loyd. Mother about the same. Nice day. Temp about 75.
            12 – Hottest day of year (85º) & hottest May 12th since 1897. Eva & I washed clothes for first time tonight.
            13 – Cherry blossoms popped out and are very late.
            17 – Big rain storm again today.
            18 – Went to Church. Ate home & went to Donna's in p.m. Took pictures. Warm & clear.
            19 – Eva & I washed tonight.
            20 – Worked in yard. Took Bernard to Chicago to get car. Eva went along. Went to Home Show tonight.
            21 – Finished digging flower beds tonight. Raining nearly every day. Dedelow over & had lunch with me today.
            22 – Planted Dahlias & glads. Late spring.
            23 – Acted as installing officer at Baraca Philathea class [church]. Ate at Ultra Modern Tea Room. Wayne installed as President.
            24 – Raining hard again. Was baby sitters at Donna's tonight. Stolte stopped in to see me.
            25 – Went to Church & took Donna's & went to see Grandma. Drove Ford. Went to see Tola too. Nice day.
            26 – Helped wash & went to meeting at the Church.
            27 – My last meeting as President of NACA. Good year. Enjoyed it. Ed Frangesh elected as President.
            28 – Clarke's Petersons & us at Ingram's for supper. Had good dinner. Raining again.
            29 – Eva & I drove in Frazer to Chris's tonight. Drove in 1½ hour. Pretty cool.
            30 – Coldest Memorial Day in years. Clear & sunny. Temp in 40's. Wayne's went camping at Pokagan. We were at Birch Lake.
            31 – Chris & I running around about cottage, material & labor.

June 1947
            1 – Rained hard all day at Lake. Came in to South Bend & stayed alnight at Chris's.
            2 – Left Mishawaka at 5:30 a.m. arrived home at 7 a.m. in time for Breakfast. Drove cream Frazer.
            6 – Milly called to tell us Fred Paris has a log cabin to sell.
            7 – Wayne & us drove to see Grandma & went on to Birch Lake to see a log cabin. Wanted too much for it. Stayed all night at cottage.
            8 – Drove home in time for Children's Day. Went to Hyde Park Baraca Philathea Rally in p.m.
            9 – Getting warmer, over 80. Unusually cold spring.
            10 – Highest for year today, 91 & high wind. Went to NACA Board Meeting at Smidts. Frangesh new President.
            11 – Chicago Tribune celebrated 100th anniversary with big celebration.
            14 – Went to Past Masters night at Temple. Dr. Shaerer & Mallett received 50-year awards. Grand Lodge all there.
            15 – Went to Church, helped preside. Ate out & left for NACA reception & registration at Palmer House. Chas. Zeller along.
            16 – Went to President's reception tonight & Ball. Big party.
            17 – Went to Officers Conference Luncheon. Rained all day. Bought new summer tan suit $29.75 at Hub. Went to Kaiser Frazer meeting with Bernard.
            18 – Went to National Banquet of NACA at Palmer House. Grand time. Mason Smith elected President.
            19 – Drove new Manhattan for first time. Took Wayne's for a ride.
            20 – Ate at Sorrento's with Wayne's. Nancy & Mom went to Violet's recital.
            21 – Clear & warm today. Temp about 80. Drove convertible Ford.
            22 – Went to Church & went to Warsaw in a.m. Drove Ford '46 convertible. Ate at Plymouth. Mother about the same.
            23 – Got up early & washed clothes. Eva got 2 new dresses & hat at Minas. I bought a new blue tropical at $45.00.
            24 – Went to NACA Board Meeting at Smidts.
            28 – Went to Rotary Annual Dinner at South Shore Country Club. Hottest day of year (96º). Dr. Smith went with us and gave address. Really a miserable day.
            29 – Eva & I went to Birch Lake, got there in time for dinner & went to Uncle Clyde's with Chris's in p.m. Open house for Connie & Chilly. Had good time. Drove Manhattan. [I believe Chilly was George R. Fish (wife Emily) who lived in Ardmore, Oklahoma. He was Mary (Fish) Kesler's (Eva's mother) brother. Mary Kesler also had a sister named Constance, could be Connie?]
            30 – Russell's left this evening for Indiana.

July 1947
            4 – Eva & I went to Claypool early. Stopped to see Mom & went back in p.m. Russell's arrived from California about 7 p.m., drove in 4 days & 1 night. They were all fine. Drove Manhattan.
            5 – Went to see Mother & Loyd. Ate lunch in Warsaw & supper at Mother's. We stayed there with Russell's.
            6 – Had open house at Mother's for Russell's. Cool day & lots of people there.
            7 – We drove home from Claypool this morning on account of traffic. Ruth had baby boy, name Eric.
            8 – Got up early & washed. Nice day. Cool & sunny.
            9 – Cut lawn. Cool all this week.
            10 – Wayne & Nancy over awhile this evening.
            11 –Wayne's left tonight for Harbert's cottage.
            12 – Eva & I went to Birch Lake arrived about 5. Temp near 90, very hot driving. Russell's arrived soon after. Went swimming, first time. Russell's slept at Estus's.
            13 – Not so hot today. We boys all went fishing at 4 a.m. Caught about 22. All at Estus's for dinner & fish fry at night. We stayed at Chris's all night. Wayne's came up.
            14 – We came home from Birch Lake this morning & Russell's came about noon. Hot day about 88º. Kids all here for supper. Had a good rain & visit with all. Bob & Marj. over.
            15 – Russell's left this morning at 8:15 for home. Cool day in 70's. They went by way of Uncle George's.
            20 – Went to Church & Sunday School. Wayne's went with us to Warsaw. Mother Kesler not so bad. Stopped at Tola's, not home. Drove green Frazer.
            21 – Cool here, in low 50's.
            22 – Temp. dropped to 49, lowest July day in 100 years. Went to NACA meeting.
            24 – Gave Ernie Peterson plans & go ahead sign on new Home.
            25 – We got 268 lbs. beef for locker. Net 54 cents per pound. Wayne got half too (262 pounds).
            26 – Warm today. Wayne got Frazer today, 5000 miles, $2200. Less 900 for '41 Studebaker. They went to Harbert's.
            27 – Went to Church. Presided with Dr. Smith. Went with Wayne's to Crown Point picnic.
            28 – Mrs. Howell on vacation. Have to keep busy.
            29 – Temp rising. About 94 today.
            30 – Hottest day of year, 96.7. Real humid. First night it was warm to sleep. Cooled off toward morning.
            31 – Real cool today. Temp. about 70 all day, with wind off lake.
           
August 1947
            2 – Big rain this morning. We went to Birch Lake this p.m. Arrived about 5 o'clock. Warm driving. Cool at Lake. Drove Manhattan.
            3 – Left after dinner to see Mother at Warsaw. Went to see Loyd, who was very low. Stopped at Don's on way. Had lunch. Cooler driving home.
            4 – Hottest day of year so far, 100.1º.
            5 – Temp 99.7, recorded as 100. Hot all over nation.
            6 – Another record day of 101.1. Really hot.
            7 – Cooled off at 4 a.m. with thunder storm & big rain. Went to Loyd's funeral. Agnes went too. Warm there, cooled considerably on way home.
            8 – Still cool today. Went to Donna's in evening.
            9 – Went to Dave Griffith's wedding. Fairly warm.
            10 – Went to Church. Ate in basement. Getting warm again. Walter called tonight after trip to Round Lake Reunion.
            11 – Still warm in 90's.
            12 – Brother Walter passed away after sudden heart attack. I got there before death. Violet & Virginia came too. Temp. high. Had to make arrangements.
            13 – Temp still in late 90's. Busy all day on funeral arrangements. Walter looks real nice. Everything working smooth.
            14 – Funeral today. Seven of family here. Buried at Lyons. Temp. dropped in p.m. Alex & Jim came from Michigan.
            15 – Cooler today. No rain yet. Went to Virginia's to sort Walter's stuff. Wayne's packing for trip.
            16 – Getting hot again. Jim came this evening with John. Leaving in morning. Wayne's left early for California. Took out 2-tone Manhattan today.
            17 – Bernard left on vacation. Went to Church. Temp 98º. Stayed in basement all day.
            18 – Temp near 100. Had busy day at office. Open at night.
            19 – Another near 100 º temp. Busy.
            20 – 3rd day in row of 100 or over temp.
            21 – Temp still around 98. No rain or break in sight.
            22 – Still warm. Longest & hottest spell in several years.
            23 – Rainstorm at noon today. Went to Birch Lake late this p.m. They were expecting us. Went swimming.
            24 – Had big storm there at noon. Temp dropped to 74. Went to see Mother, was in and out of rain all day. Wayne's in L.A.
            25 – Somewhat cooler. More rain.
            26 – Have hours at sales room every evening. Sales going good. Went to NACA meeting at Smidts.
            27 – Kids are heading for Yellowstone.
            30 – Left early p.m. for Birch Lake. Warmer. Went swimming. Had fish Bernard sent.
            31 – Fred Paris came over to see about digging basement at Lake. Had big time. Wayne's in Yellowstone. Eva went with Estus to see Mother.
           
September 1947
            1 – Very nice. Stayed over at Lake. Weather cooler.
            2 – Drove in this morning. Bernard back. Raised my salary $75.00 per month after only 10 months.
            3 – Mom & I ate lunch at Donna's. Kids are swell. Had Publication Committee meeting tonight.
            4 – Sold Manhattan to Stawicki today.
            5 – Bought melons on 41, may sell a Manhattan. Wayne's got home tonight. Drove 6500 miles (3 weeks).
            6 – Sold Manhattan to Zandstra today.
            7 – Presided at Church. Had meeting after. Ate at Tuscana's. Went to Donna's. To Wayne's in evening.
            8 – Regular summer temperatures now, in early 90's.
            9 – 32nd Anniversary. Was at Bake's for supper. Had good meal & good time. Sold Manhattan to Helen Vjodva.
            10 – Still warm & humid.
            13 – Drove to Birch Lake this p.m., arrived early.
            14 – Went to see Mother after dinner. She seemed about the same. Arrived home early.
            15 – Roshashanna. Jewish New Years. [Rosh Hashanah.] Bernard away for two days.
            16 – Went to Board Meeting at Phil Smidts.
            19 – David's Birthday. Got him corduroys, socks & T Shirt.
            20 – Hot today, about 90. Went shopping. Eva got hat, dress (red).
            21 – Went to Church. Rained hard & windstorm. Was to Wayne's & Donna's.
            22 – Temp. dropped to about 50. Summer about gone. Took Wayne & Nancy to Spa. Had good dinner.
            23 – Yom Kippur started at sundown. Went to see Donna's.
            24 – Yom Kippur. Bernard off all day. Left at 7 p.m. for Starved Rock. Arrived at 9 p.m. Have room 108, rate $14.00 per day. Cool. Drove Manhattan. Have 1500 miles on.
            25 – Went to LaSalle. Saw K.F. Dealer [Kaiser Frazer]. Weather a little cool, but not uncomfortable. Bright & sunny. Was in most all day. Went to Utica in p.m. Temp 58.
            26 – Went shopping at LaSalle. Got kids gifts. Had Indian show. Same family. Girl now past 4, boy 11. Temp about 60.
            27 – Went to Matthieson State Park. Beautiful canyons. Went to see deer, too. Had a Magician show. Temp about 68.
            28 – Daylight saving ends. Left after dinner & band. Bill was $54.63, 4 days. Stopped at Hammond, saw kids & come on to Birch Lake, arrived at 6:30. Cool., about 68.
            29 – Cool & windy today. Went to see Dal.
            30 – Cold today. Went in to Mishawaka tonight. Stayed all night.

October 1947
            1 – Chris's & us went to see Grandma on her birthday. She was about the same. We ate in Warsaw. Went to Tola's & came back to Lake.
            2 – Dal started man digging basement today. Went fishing this p.m. No luck. Warmer today.
            3 – Dick was still digging. Left about 7:30 a.m. for home. Arrived at 9:30. Went to office about noon.
            4 – Weather nice.
            5 – Went to Church today.
            6 – Temp in 80's. Ideal weather.
            10 – Took load to South Bend to District Meeting. Nice day. Visited Chris. They can't get cement. Sunday School board meeting tonight.
            12 – Went to Church & after dinner went to LaGrange. Saw Lizzie's & Jean's. Came home early.
            13 – October nicest month of year. Almost ideal. No rain & cold weather.
            14 – Went to Detroit with Chicago Kaiser-Frazer dealers on NYC in Pullman. 65 dealers & 112 aboard.
            15 – Arrived Detroit 7 a.m. Went through Willow Run. Had fine lunch & drove away a Kaiser Custom at 2 p.m. Arrived home at 8:30. Stopped at Birch Lake. Beautiful day and trip.
            18 – Went to Birch Lake this p.m. Fall coloring just beautiful. We arrived at 5 p.m. Warm & clear. Dal has footing in for cottage.
            19 – Dal came over. Changed plans some. Had fried chicken. Came home early. Kids at Harbert's cottage.
            20 – Weather still nice. Reached a high of 88.
            21 – Went to NACA at Phil Smidts. Good meeting.
            23 – Went to Baraca Philathea Rally. Was elected Treasurer.
            24 – Went to see The Jolson Story at Calumet. Second show this year. Weather some cooler.
            25 – Kids went to Purdue. They beat Illinois 14-7. Diane stayed with us.
            26 – Went to Church & to see Mother this p.m. Ate in Valpo. She was the same. Are to move the patients to hospital.
            27 – Nancy's grandmother buried today [Elizabeth Josephine O'Hara Harbert]. Rain. Kids stayed here.
            31 – No trick or treat tonight. October warmth over average. Hit high of 84 & 86.

November 1947
            2 – Went to Church. Ate dinner at home. Put up all storm windows. Nice day. Donna & Farrell over for supper & evening.
            3 – Had 1st Quarterly Conference at Church. Good dinner. Went to see Dr. Marcus in Chicago. Had ECG. Blood pressure 160/100.
            4 – Hammond went Republican by 658. First time in 13 years. East Chicago Democrat by 600. Gary by 1600. Whiting by 750.
            6 – Had Persons, Clarks & Ingrams here for supper. Had good dinner & fine time. Showed movies.
            8 – Temp dropped to around 30. Snow in Northwest. Went to see The Egg & I.
            9 – First killing frost last night. Temp below 30. Went to church & to Donna's for dinner. Spent p.m. & lunch. Kiddies were cute.
            16 – Helped preside at Church. Left to see Mother. Wayne's went along. She is about the same.
            17 – Mrs. Estelle Erwin started at office today. Seems she will be O.K.
            18 – Donna went to hospital a little in advance I guess. Nothing happened.

            19 – Donna had 3rd baby girl at 12:38 a.m., weight 7 lb. 11 oz. Name Janis Lorine. Getting along O.K. Fifth grandchild.

            22 – Took up dahlia bulbs today. Getting colder.
            23 – Went to Church & Sunday School. Ate at home. Donna came home from hospital. We took supper out and ate with them.
            24 – Mom & I went to Donna's for breakfast. She stayed all day. First real snow (6 inches) of season. Went to Kaiser-Frazer sales meeting.
            25 – Went to NACA at Smidts. Also attended meeting of Service Club Council at Hammond. Picked Mom up at Donna's.
            26 – Eva at Donna's all day. Picked her up at night.
            27 – Thanksgiving Day. Snowing & about 35 º. Ate turkey at Wayne's with Harbert's & Doris & Dal. Good dinner. Turkey cost about $7.00.
            28 – We went to Donna's again today. Pretty cold, about 8 above.
            29 – Went to work & to locker. Getting colder. Low tonight. Wayne bought a 1941 Dodge $1095.00 in Chicago.
            30 – Temp. hit .6 º this morning. Lowest November 30th since 1874. Went to Church & to Wayne's for dinner. Donna's in p.m. Addressed Forum at Harbor Baptist Church tonight.

December 1947
            1 – Getting warmer. Eva at Donna's for last day. Had supper there. Starting to thaw.
            2 – Temp. went over 40. Snow all gone.
            4 – Went to second meeting of Service Club Council. Set our plans for Christmas Party for Orphanage.
            7 – Went to Church & Sunday School. Dr. Smith's 7th Anniversary.
            9 – Went shopping in Chicago. Got Bernard's bowling bag, etc. Got radio, furs & pressure cookers.
            11 – Had meeting of Service Council. Got a donation of a lot of toys from Whiting Lions.
            12 – Eva's birthday. She was at Wayne's, but I had to go to Chicago Kaiser-Frazer meeting with employees. Quite cold. Gave Mom new pair Florsheim's [shoes].
            14 – Went to Church & Sunday School.
            15 – NACA meeting at Smidts & Trustee Meeting at Church. Met jointly with Hyde Park.
            16 – Sunny day. Took notion to go see Mother. Snow & ice from Valpo on. Mother not so good. Saw Tola & Earl.
            18 – Had our last meeting of Orphan's Party group. Hanging of greens in Church.
            20 – Had Sunday School program at Church. Nice program. Taught college class today.
            22 – Had big Orphans Party given by Service Club Council. It was a big success. 125 there. Gifts & treats for all.
            23 – Went to Bake's with gifts as they were leaving early for Knox.
            24 – Had party at Office. Marcus gave me $1700 bonus check. Went the rounds delivering gifts & to bed early.
            25 – Got up at 6:30. Had Christmas here. Started snowing at 8 a.m. until about 2 inches fell. Temp 30 º. Went the rounds to Wayne's & Donna's & to Doris M. for turkey dinner. Home at 5:30. Had a nice Christmas & big day.
            26 – Day after Christmas. All is calm.
            27 – Went to Betty Fischer's wedding at Church. Donna went along. Mild temp.
            28 – Went to Church & had all kids home for Sunday dinner. All were fine.
            29 – Temp in 30's.
