– Mom had a premature Birthday dinner for me tonight for the two of us. She

Bake's. Still cool. Went to meeting at Roby Inn. [Bake had a lot in Griffith where he had a large garden.]

– Planted 1 row cucumbers, 2 rows corn & row beans on Bake's. Also 2 dozen
cabbage. Farrell helped. Went to see Bernard Marcus about job. Encouraging.

– Woodmar Lot plowed. Planted 4 hills pumpkins, 3 hills muskmelon, 1 row
onions.

– Farrell & I planted row cucumbers & row of beans in Woodmar. Temp.
81, getting hotter.

– Farrell's birthday. Gave him pair of pajamas & $2.00. We went out to
ice-cream & cake. Very warm. 84 high. Have been without bread for 2 days.

– Wayne & I planted 3 rows catarodin Potatoes, row of onions, a few cabbage
& peppers on Bake's. Also 2 dozen tomatoes & 2 dozen cabbage on Lot.

& Al celebrating 30th Anniversary. Kids all went too. Cool about

– Went to Harbert's Cottage. Wayne's there too. Took pot roast. Nice day. Not
too warm.

– Took day off. Took Donna's, drove to Birch Lake. Everyone there. Lake was
fine. Getting warmer. Diane had tonsils out.

– Nice day & warm. Went swimming twice. Milly's & kids went to town.
I don't know the date
of this photo, but have to include Milly & Eldon Crackel as they were so
close to Lester & Eva. I think after Milly's parents died, Lester & Eva
became surrogate parents. As you can tell from Lester's diary entries, the
Crackel's were an integral part of their
lives. The Milne kids remember Thanksgiving and Christmas meals shared with the
Crackels and enjoyed Milly's mincemeat pies and suet pudding, as well as summer
barbecues. I think all the Milne girls have the handiest little metal spatulas
that Milly provided, and even some fine antiques.

got home about 10:00. Real nice week end.

light shower tonight. First real rain in 34 days. Temp 92. Rained hard in
Woodmar.

– Went to Church. Ate dinner at home & went with Donna's to see garden.
Rain soaked thru at Woodmar. Chas. & Minnie at Bake's. Chas. Birthday. Had
lunch there.

– Coldest Sept. 3rd in 51 years. In low 40's. Frost in places, but
not here. Picked corn & pickles. Eva canned 12½ quarts juice from Mother's
tomatoes.

– Was to Donna's for supper. Getting warmer. Put up 6 quarts kosher dills from
garden.

Marcus. Eagle was disappointed.

– Cardinals won pennant by taking 2nd game of play-off from
Brooklyn.

– First Frazer car came in. I opened up show room & locked up on account of
Yom Kippur. Temp. 84 today.

– Picked last of corn & cucumbers, most of green & ripe tomatoes.
Canned today. Grape juice, $1.50 per basket. Warm today. Temp over 80.

– Went to Church. Donna came home from hospital about 2:00. We canned other
basket of grape juice. Baby o.k. Warm. About 84.

– Went to LaSalle shopping. Rained afternoon & evening but temp mild.
Movies at Lodge.

– Beautiful day, temp about 72. Went on Nature Hike with Party. Stayed in Lodge
in p.m. Indians entertained at night. Boy 10, girl 3½, same family as before.

– Another fine day. We checked out at 1 o'clock & drove to Claypool, 185
miles. Called kids from Dyer. Mother was surprised. Bill at Starved Rock
$37.07, 3 days.

– Devoy's & Tola's at Mom's for dinner. We came home early. Another nice
day, about 76º. Wayne
finished overhauling his car.

– Went to East Chicago Methodist Church to hear of Pension plan. Elmer Jones
present. Temp about 80 today.

– Went to Donna's for a few minutes. Still warm & sunny.

– Led Study group at East Chicago tonight. Raining. Subject Special Material
Problems.

– Went with Nancy & Wayne & the kids to "Trick or Treat."
They had a big time. Last day officially at Plant after 30 years & 3 months.
Over half a life time. Leave with no regrets.

– Started on a new career with Marcus Motors, as General Manager. Dealer in
Kaiser-Frazer cars. Hope my luck holds out. Have prospered so far in a modest
way.

– Wayne & Nancy went to Homecoming at Purdue. Wisconsin won 24-20. David
& Diane stayed with us. Rained all night. Worked until 1 o'clock at Marcus.
3
– Went to Sunday School & Church & to Wayne's for dinner. Rained most
all day. Temp. in 50's.

– Had picture in paper announcing association with Marcus.
5
– Election Day. Republican Landslide. Now have control of House & Senate,
by over 50 & ___. Even Cook County went Republican, but Lake didn't.

– Devoy's had Sale today. Sold everything, at good prices. Went to Past Masters
Dinner. Good dinner.

– First Quarterly Conference tonight presided over by Dr. Martin. Had Trustees
Dinner at Indiana Hotel. Had to give Sunday School Report, John absent.

– Got 2 new retreads. Have 4 new ones all around now.

– Went to Sunday School & Church. Kids all here for dinner. Warm day.

– Got out first set of reports for Marcus. Haven't closed Ledgers yet. Went to
Sunday School Board Meeting tonight. Malone presided.

– Had first real killing freeze. Temp. below 30 at night.

– Got first pay check from Marcus. Went to David's school to carnival. Warm day
& evening, over 50.

– Got hair cut. Raining today. Went to Chicago with Bernard to drive his car back.
Temp. dropped tonight to 20 above. Coldest day so far.

– Went to Sunday School & Church. Had dinner at home. Dug carrots. Got
nearly a bushel of nice ones. Dug up Dahlias & bulbs. Put anti freeze in
car.

– Devoy & Lulu visiting in Hammond. Stayed all night with us. Still cold.

– Went to dinner at Knox with Dr. & Mrs. Smith at Church. Saw Chas. &
Minnie, also Mary & Mrs. Craigmile. She is 88 years old. Quite cold.

– Cold again this morning, about 20 above. Henry Huth came in to see me today.
Had Pinochle Party at Stoltes. 8 Boys there.

– Thanksgiving Day. Went out to Mother's with Wayne. Nancy & David couldn't
go. Had fine dinner. Chris's, Tola's & Russell's were there. Uncle Milt's
over.

– Mr. Marcus went to Detroit to drive back 1st Kaiser Special.

– A truck left 2 more Kaisers off today. Making 3 at one time.

– Went to Church & Sunday School. Ate dinner at home. Went to Marian
Christensen's wedding at Church.

– Had picture in paper with Marcus & Kaiser car. Cars advanced today
Kaisers $94.00 Frazers $124.00.

– Was over to Wayne's this evening. Weather warm. High 59.

– John L. Lewis called off coal strike today until March 31st. Temp.
over 60 today. Went shopping. Pearl Harbor Anniversary.

– Mom did not go to Church today. Still warm, about 61.

– Reached a new high of 63 today.

– Eva's birthday. Was all to Wayne's for supper.

– Had first real snow. About 1½ inch. Thawed before night.

– Went shopping. Got hair cut. Getting colder.

– Went to Church. Ate lunch and had big meal at night. Wayne's here.

– Started to clean up DeSoto to sell. Temp went to a low of 5 above.

– Drove Kaiser in to Chicago first time. Also home this evening. Went to help
Louis Kish on Income Tax.

– Got new blue overcoat from Ed Flin, size 36, cost $50.00. First coat since
1937. Was out to Donna's. Got new Health Shoe $9.50, size 6 ½ C.

– Drove Kaiser home tonight. Went to Church to trim tree & hang greens.
Temp up to 30 again.

– Sold DeSoto, drove it 6 years, 51,000 miles. Bought it in 1940, cost
$1,308.00. Sold it for $1,450.00 cash.

– Bought tree, my choice for $1.25. Trimmed it tonight. Raining & snowing
some.

– Went to Church. Had kids all here for dinner. Went to Sunday School play at 4
o'clock. They surprised me by presenting me with a Tripod & Head and Titler
[for camera].

– Finished wrapping packages tonight.

– Bought last gifts today, Donna's slippers. Came home at 5 o'clock. Took gifts
to Virgene. Temp. mild.

– Got up before 6. Had our Christmas here & went to Wayne's for theirs
& for dinner. Had 20# turkey. Walter there, also Harberts. Clear, dry day,
temp in 30's. Donna's came over in evening. Kids had great time.

– Nancy sick today. Mom went over to keep kiddies. Ate supper there.

– Temp up over 50 today. Raining some.

– Started snowing in night, also rained. Drove new Frazer home for the week
end.

– Brother Alex surprised us by coming in this morning on M.C. [Michigan Central Railroad]. He went to
Church with I & Walter. Took him to see Wayne's, Donna's & Bake's.
Snowed more & colder. He stayed all night. We all had a good time.

– Took Alex to South Shore train. He went to LaGrange & Verda's. Temp.
dropped below 10 above.

– Still cold & icy. Stayed home this evening. Never heard whistles at
midnight. Temp rising. Temps for year averaged above 3 degrees for year.
