1968-1969

January 1968
            1 – Ate pot luck at Club. Zero & below up North. Indiana got beat by Southern Cal [Rose Bowl].
            2 – Temp in 80s. Zero up North.
            3 – Got Social Security check. Moderating up North.
            4 – Checked prices on 2 stores. Publix has best record.
            5 – Florida still warm. North real cold & snow.
            6 – Setting zero or below in North.
            7 – To Church & Tola's for dinner. -15º in Hammond. Wayne's went to Milly's.
            8 – Jack Milne flew to Portland. Sister Idella died suddently of heart. [Jack & Idella were William Milne's children.]
            9 – Idella's funeral today, 67½ years old.
            11 – Went to Dr. R. at St. Cloud. Eva's blood pressure 185/95, mine 195/110. Changed meds for 2 weeks.
            12 – All nation except Florida & Hawaii in deep freeze.
            13 – Temp in 50s & 60s.
            14 – Both have colds. Missed Church 1st time. Getting colds. To Mary P. for beans & corn bread.
            15 – Marge & Bob called. Cold all way to Florida. Got grapefruit for us & ___.
            16 – One of coldest days, 36º in night. In 50s today.
            17 – Marge & Bob left. Stewey arrived this evening.
            19 – Stewey's left today.
            20 – Oscar's came from Indiana to Glen's.
            21 – Saw Ham's at Church. They are at Abby's We ate at Red Horse on Colonial. 99¢ all we could eat.
            22 – Home & cooler.
            23 – Colder now in South. Warmer up North.
            24 – Cold & windy. Cloudy, rained ½ inch in night.
            25 – Blood pressure 150/95, Eva's 140/85, weight 167 & 144. Much improved. Changed medicine. Much colder, in 40s.
            26 – Sent anniversary card to Donna's.
            28 – Ate at Scotys.
            30 – Weather holding up. Cool night.
            31 – Claude Smith died at 75.

February 1968
            1 – 3 deaths this week in Court [trailer park].
            2 – Went to Orlando & to funeral home to see Mallory & Louie.
            3 – Got new ____ cabinet $90.00. Nice.
            4 – To Scotys for dinner. Donna & Farrell called about Janis's wedding tomorrow.
            5 – Loaded cabinet. Janis married today at Sacramento to Gregg Pylemann.
            6 – Dinner at Mary's. Nancy called. [Lester's birthday]
            7 – Temp 45º. Hobby Show. Eva got perm. Claude Smith died suddenly. 1st of 3.
            8 – Class Party at Church. Cliff Maloney died.
            9 – Cool night. Louis Gotz died today. [He mentioned these 3 deaths a week ago, so I think he's having vision problems and making entries on the wrong dates.]
            10 – Cold at night.
            11 – Toots, M & B & Harry met us & took us to Dutch Park. Got grapefruit.
            12 – Went to Daytona to see HC Brown. Not good. Called on R.J.
            18 – Met R.J. & Marge at House of Beef & had a good dinner & visit. Had good meal.

            21 – About coldest since we have been coming. Went to get paint for roof but too wet to paint.
            22 – Eva got hair set & 2 weeks appt. Went to store & show. Rained over 1 inch.
            23 – Rained all night & day, over 1 inch.
            24 – Still cold, windy & dreary. Rodeo flooded. Stayed away. Julius Bros died.
            25 – Colder morning 33º. John Henry & White boys here.
            27 – Walter arrived 2:30 p.m.
            28 – Cool.
            29 – Leap year.
           
March 1968
            1 – Just drove around.
            2 – Weather still cool.
            3 – Went to Red Horse after Church.
            5 – Nothing exciting.
            10 – Ate Sunday dinner at Tola's.
            11 – Walter left for Cocoa Beach, Miami. Got new mail box, No. 79.
            12 – Got box all up.
            15 – Had 3-way telephone conference on Kids' Birthday. Success.
            17 – Gordie & Kay dropped in on us today. Got them grapefruit.
            19 – Clark's arrived at 2:30. Camper in Court. Ate roast beef tonight here.
            20 – Ate with Clark's at noon.
            21 – Went to Tupperware & Gatorland.
            22 – Went to Abby's.
            23 – Went to Publix & Ekerds. Got Fiesta radio.
            24 – Ate corn bread & beans at Tola's after Church.
            25 – Clark's left this a.m. Got some grapefruit.
            26 – Weather breaking in Nation.
            27 – Warmer. Less storms.
            28 – Wayne called. Is to come & drive us home account of my vision.
            29 – Martin King assassinated. Memphis.
            30 – March ends with little rain.
           
April 1968
            1 – Getting warmer each day.
            3 – Took car to shop & walked home 2 miles.
            4 – Eva to hair dresser & I raked all leaves. Got call from Wayne. He is coming to drive us home. HC Brown died today at Daytona.
            5 – Got car. A good job for $70.00.
            8 – Nice day. Warmest day 88º since Oct. 17, '67 89º. Planted 2 azaleas.
            9 – Collet's drove in today for 2 hours. On way to Sarasota. Still hot.
            10 – Still hot. Started packing.
            12 – Sent Grace a card.
            13 – Wrote Selds, Grace & Wayne. Got 48 cans grapefruit $4.00 at Davenport.
            14 – Easter Dunday. Ate at Tola's. Put car top on today.
            15 – Loading & packing.
            17 – Leaving Court every day. Had first Col. Sanders chicken.
            20 – Getting hot. Had Mary & Glen & Col. Sanders chicken for dinner.
            21 – Hottest day in Nation 96º.
            22 - 96º again. Glen's left.
            23 – Fixed air conditioner, $10.00.
            24 – Cooler today. Picked up grapefruit $3.75.
            25 – Met Wayne at airport 9:30. Went to bed early. Cooler again.
            26 – Left Kissimmee 5:45 27,728. Drove to Monteagle,Tennessee.
            27 – Drove home 1188 miles. Arrived 6:30. Got dinner at Elkhart. Kids all here. Everything is open.
            28 – All at Wayne's for dinner. Milly's too.
            29 – Went to Telephone Co. & Power Co. Went to see Lawrence Reed about eyes.
            30 – Picked up Tribune.
           
May 1968
            1 – Got another test.
            2 – Got paper and groceries.
            5 – Home alone. Dean's up.
            6 – Cold wind. Low 40. Planted peas.
            7 – Coldest day of record, 24 in South Bend, 34 here. Planted beans.
            8 – Warmed up to 70.
            9 – Clyde has appt. with Cassidy 6/7 at 9 a.m. Tilled low patch.
            10 – Went to see Watner. No ___. Told about my appt.
            11 – Went home with Wayne's.
            12 – Went to First Church Hammond. Beautiful.

            13 – Saw Hawes girls. Wayne took us out.
            14 - ___ Annie of Lyonsville Church.
            15 – Nancy came for us in storm.
            16 – Dinner at Walter's.
            17 – Bake's for dinner.
            18 – All kids here. Planted 3 rows corn. Peas shooting.
            19 – Had 16 at Wayne's.
            20 – Got hair cut & groceries.
            21 – Planted onions, squash, cucumbers & ½ tomatoes.
            22 – Planted lettuce.
            23 – Cool weather all of May.
            25 – Kids came in rain.
            26 – Planted 3 rows corn & Kentucky wonder beans, 24 tomato plants.
            29 – Went to Milly's & to cemetery.
            30 – At Milly's all day.
            31 – Got home this a.m. Corn up.

June 1968
            1 – Raining some & getting warmer. Kids came.
            2 – Hottest day since home, about 78-80.
            3 – Hot & humid.
            4 – Starting on hottest week. Near 90.
            5 – Still warm. Replanted cucumbers, squash, corn & beans. Kennedy slain [Robert F. Bobby  Kennedy].
            6 – Kennedy died.
            7 – Went shopping in Elkhart. Kids came late.
            8 – Bobby's Funeral – Largest.
            10 – Hot. Planted 4 rows corn.
            11 – Got hair cut. Rained.
            12 – Hooked up softener today. 1st time in year. Rained.
            15 – Went to Reunion at Cora Lake. Over 40 there. Stayed overnight.
            16 – Came home 4 p.m. Bill Milne came. Went to Mishawaka overnight.
            17 – Milly took me to Dr. Can't operate yet.
            18 – Came home.
            21 – Went to Dr. Warner. Got 20/25 on left eye.
            22 – Got call from Carol at Janesville.
            23 – Carol, Bill & Lori came at 2 a.m. David's here.
            24 – Judge acquitted me on lane violation. Planted last 3 rows of corn.
            25 – Rained all day, nearly 4 inches. 13 walls caved in. Milly's for supper.
            26 – Rained again.
            27 – Carol's left for home & Hammond.
            29 – Wayne's home & up here.
           
July 1968
            3 – Fireworks tonight.
            6 – Got new lens. 26/25. Are OK.
            7 – Wayne's all here. Mary won 3rd place.
            8 – Walter went home.
            9 – Warm.
            14 – Big Regatta, Juniors, 35 boats in. All here but Diane & John.

            20 – Walter came.
            21 – Nice day, 2 races.
            22 – Covered tomatoes with grass.
            23 – Rained through evening & next morning, 1½ inches.
            24 – Went to Cass.
            25 – Ideal summer weather, in low 80s. [Same entry as prior year, but definitely 2 separate entries.]

August 1968
            3 – Quiet, no races, no wind.
            4 – Kids here except two oldest. Had 1st corn & Kentucky wonders.
            5 – Convention opened. Hot.
            7 – Nixon won on 1st ballot, 680 votes.
            8 – Agnew nominated V.P. Had over 1 inch rain.
           
October 1968
            27 – Left home for Hammond.

When Lester's vision became worse from cataracts, Wayne started driving them to Florida in Lester's car then flying home. This photo was taken at Wayne's in Hammond the day before they left for Florida in October 1968. Left to right: Eva, Wayne, Nancy, Mary, Laura & Amy











            31 – Left Hammond at 7 a.m., drove to Lebanon, Tennessee.

November 1968
            1 – Landed at Cal., Georgia about 5. Found Jan & Greg. Left & drove to Dawson, Georgia.
            2 – Arrived here [Kissimmee] about noon 1260 miles.
            13 – Entered hospital today for eye surgery.
            14 – Had 1st surgery today. Otto Mais died.
            18 – Left hospital for home.
           
December 1968
            17 – Diane's baby born cesarian OK.

1969

January 1969
            22 – Went to hospital.
            23 – 2nd eye surgery.
            27 – Left hospital for home. All done.


[And this is the end of known diary entries. Lester died in Indiana on March 10, 1975 and
Eva died at their home at Birch Lake on August 5, 1975.]
