1959

January 1959
            1 – Went to North Webster to P.B. Smith's funeral. Saw whole family. Driving slick & hazardous. Went to Milly's for dinner & home in time to see Iowa beat Colorado University 38-12.
            2 – Worked tonight. Got barn roof on [pony barn].
            3 – Brought first 5 ponies home today & got them in 4 box stalls. Snowing & getting colder.
            4 – Snowed off & on all day. Wayne's called & couldn't come, neither did Milly & Eldon. Stayed home & fed ponies.
            5 – Temp. about 6 below, coldest for here. Couldn't start Simca so stayed home. Real cold all over, -16º in Hammond.
            6 – Went to work with Frank. Got battery charged. Drove '53 DeSoto home.
            7 – Temp. back up to 20. Car started right off without assistance.
            8 – About 45 today, colder tonight.
            9 – Mrs. N [Neterer? She & Frank were neighbors at Birch Lake] drove DeSoto in this a.m.
            10 – Worked all day (Saturday)
            11 – Cleaned out barn. Stayed home. Milly & Eldon out about 4 p.m., ate lunch with us. Vern North died today, suddenly.
            12 – To Rotary.
            13 – Thawing in high 30's.
            14 – Temp in 40's. Thawing. Snow nearly gone, but leaving ice around cottage.
            15 – Spitting a little snow. Getting colder.
            16 – Left home 6 a.m. to go with Balls to Sales Meeting in Chicago. Went through blizzard. All clear in Chicago. Around South Bend 14 inches  traffic stopped. Saw about 75 cars off highway coming home.
            17 – Snowing more in night, about 5 inches new snow. About 10 above. Didn't try to go to work.
            18 – About 4 above this morning. Warmed up to 15 or 20. Wayne's surprised us by driving up for day. Kids had a big time in snow & we put a ton of hay in mow.
            19 – 5 inches of new snow in night. Stayed home from work. Plow came by at 3:30. No schools.
            20 – Made it to work O.K., but more snow & rain this evening, really bad.
            21 – 2-inch crust of sleet froze on top of all the snow. Temp in 20's but couldn't get car out to highway. Stayed home again.
            22 – Snow plows came by at 3:30 p.m. Stayed home again today.
            23 – Managed to get to work. Still bad driving. My day to work. Closed at 6 p.m. Made Rotary up at Goshen.
            24 – Picked up groceries. Ice melted off trees.
            25 – Picked up paper. Stayed home all day. Let ponies out. Broke through snow crust. Neterers had open house 30th anniversary. Cold & more snow.
            26 – Worked again tonight.
            27 – Picked up feed.
            28 – Rained on top of ice making it real slick.
            29 – Ice & snow everywhere. Worst in many years. Hard to walk without falling.
            30 – Worked again tonight.
            31 – Light snow, making roads hazardous. Had a time on hills. Was late getting home. Delivered Dick Erickson car, bought groceries. Had 12 days of zero or below in January.

February 1959
            1 – Nice day but cold. High 16 above. Let ponies out awhile. Cleaned barn. Got paper. Roads real slick.
            2 – Sold a Plymouth Fury.
            3 – My Floor Day. Cold this morning. About 4 above.
            4 – Temp. remains in and above zero.
            6 – My 64th birthday. One year to go before retirement. Hope I make it.
            7 – Temp over 40 & some thaw. Worked 'til 4.
            8 – Picked up Sunday paper. Colder, in 20's. Let ponies out.
            9 – Still icy & cold. Went to Rotary. Snowed on way home. Wet & sticky, bad driving. Warm.
            10 – Rained in night. Roads slick as glass. Didn't try to go out. Everyone was sliding off road. Wasn't too cold.
            11 – Tried it today. Slid in ditch, was pulled out by tractor & Mr. Hanson. Worked 'til 6 p.m.
            12 – Turned warmer & thawing. Big fog at night. Temp. near 40.
            13 – Still thawing, over 40. Ice most all off of roads. Still a lot around our place.
            14 – Went to Cassopolis, got car license & both our Driver Licenses. Both passed with high score. Went to Elkhart from there. Mom visited with Mrs. Ball. Got word Laura was in hospital. Raining.
            15 – Got paper. Was home all day.
            19 – About zero this morning.
            20 – About 5 below this a.m. Simca wouldn't start. Mrs. N helped with their truck. Went to Pot Luck at Harveys.
            21 – Worked til 1 p.m. Left ponies out & cleaned barn. Started Willys after 2 months.
            22 – Left ponies out. Nice & warm. Fixed back fence. Was home alone all day. Drove Willys in to Union to charge battery.
            23 – Vern let Simca go to St. Joe. Driving a '55 Dodge.
            24 – Warming up some. Still cool at night.
            27 – Worked tonight. Had a couple in on Conv. Temp over 50 today & thawing.
            28 – Sold Plymouth Conv. to couple. Didn't get home until 2:30. Took Major to Porter Hall for shot & license. Farrell called tonight, talked to Donna.
           
March 1959
            1 – Nice bright day. Over 40. Put ponies out all day Wayne's surprised us about 10:30 by coming up. All of them rode the ponies.
            2 – About 9 above. Our coldest winter in later February & now March.
            3 – My day to work.
            6 – More snow again today. Came home in storm. Reported 77 ½ inches this year in South Bend. I suppose we had near that much.
            7 – Altogether we had about 6 inches snow but temp. went over 40 & sun shown bright & melted. Had hard time on hill this morning. Eldon & Milly came to stay all night.
            8 – Snowed again, but cleared & melted. Temp 46. Milly & Eldon here all day. Brought a small turkey for dinner. Ponies were out.
            9 – Friday's snow all gone, but still some of original snow left.
            11 – Eva got permanent today, $5.00.
            13 – Temp in 40's. Gradually thawing. Sunday 60. Went to Milly's for dinner. Partly cloudy. Temp up to 30. Was 8 above this a.m.
            14 – Worked 'til noon. Got 2 bushels corn at Pine Creek. Rained & thawed in night. Snow & ice nearly gone.
            15 – Kids' Birthday. Started out windy & ended in blizzard. We stayed home. A lot of snow fell.
            16 – More snow. Temp about 12 above.
            17 – Big snow & icy roads, but sun will take most of it. Winter's last gasp.
            18 – Went to Cararama at South Bend [car-o-rama?]. Went to Lions musical at Elkhart. Warm, near 60.
            19 – Warm in 60's. Snow all gone. First time since Thanksgiving. Longest & coldest winter in years.
            20 – Mom went to Dentist, had tooth filled. Cold wind, around 20.
            21 – Temp hit 10 above this morning. Sunny & windy. Warmed up to over 30º. Took garbage to dump. Got stuck. Wooleys stopped in.
            22 – Temp went to 25 in night, enough to allow us to pick up car. About last freeze.
            23 – Temp in 70's.
            25 – Took another Simca – light green.
            27 – Our last snow of year hit this morning, about ½ inch, but was gone by 9 a.m. Wayne's came up. Opened cottage.
            28 – Came home at noon. Kids cleaned out whole barn. Got trailer weighed & got 10 bales of straw & 2 bushels corn. Kids left about 5:30.
            29 – Easter Sunday. Left early for Hammond. Got to Wayne's at 7:50 their time. They were just getting up. We went to 9 o'clock Church. Met a lot of old friends. Had good dinner. Went over to see Nora & Bake & left for home early. Got home about 6 p.m. Fairly warm day. Drove Ron Siberol's DeSoto.
           
April 1959
            4 – My Saturday to work. Ponies got out of back fence, started to mend it tonight.
            5 – Went to Church in Elkhart. Ate at home & fixed fences in p.m. Temp over 50, but windy. Rained some. Margaret Harvey buried today.         
            8 – My day to work.

            11 – Went to Sale at Walkerton, bought sorrel stud $150.00 [Sir Cedric]. Gave man $15.00 to deliver him. Kids came up. Cleaned barn & hauled manure. [Yep, that's me on the swing in the photo below.]


            12 – Cut road through woods. Kids all love ponies. Ate dinner at Wayne's. Nice weather on cool side. David plowed garden.
            13 – Went to Rotary Conference at South Bend for noon luncheon. Sat with Charles Bounds. Bred Penny to new stud.
            14 – Cool mornings, but warm day.
            15 – Planted row of peas & set onions. Temp over 70 º.
            16 – My Floor Day. Over 70º & sunny.
            17 – Temp in 70's.
            18 – Worked around yard & barn. Cooler today.
            19 – Cool today, in 40's. Milly & Eldon here for dinner. Vern & Genevieve dropped in [Balls who owned the car dealership where Lester worked: Vernon M. Ball Plymouth]. Looked at ponies. Lawrence put up rail fence at barn. Looks good. Rained.
            21 – Frank plowed garden with Lank's tractor. Took 2 hours.
            22 – Mom had dental appointment. Needed no work.
            25 – Real warm today, over 70. Turned cool in evening. Was at Balls for supper. Sprayed trees, 1st time. Paid Lank $10.00 for plowing.
            26 – Kids surprised us about 10 a.m. David & Diane didn't come. Wayne & I painted half the barn in 3 hours. Bred Honey Bee first time.
            27 – Started to rain this evening, rained most all night.
            28 – Rained hard all day, over crock. Mom got hair done. Got oil today 211 gallons, filled tank.
            29 – Went to see man to cut brush.
            30 – Rained again this morning.
           
May 1959
            1 – Worked for Smitty tonight. Men cut brush, cost $30.00.
            2 – Mom & I painted East side of barn. Kids came about 4, we fenced in garden. Temp a high of 90º.
            3 – Fixed tractor, sprayed trees, planted row of peas, radishes, carrots & beans. Temp 88, warm.
            4 – Planted 2 rows honey rock melons. Still in high 80's.
            5 – Planted 3 rows early corn. Warm 88.
            6 – Temp dropped in night to 50's. Planted 2 rows Pride of Wisconsin melons. Honey Bee settled.
            7 – Finished painting stable.
            8 – Temp. at 40 this a.m. Planted row of Early Bird watermelons.
            9 – Worked today all day. Wayne called this evening.
            10 – Mothers Day. Rained some. Went to Tola's. Turned out nice. Had nice visit. Donna called.
            11 – Jim & Pansy stopped on way from Florida. First time here. They liked our plan. We had a good visit. Fairly warm. Had about 1" rain.
            12 – Jim's left this morning. Worked tonight. P.B. today, second time.
            13 – Getting cooler. Stirred up garden.
            14 – Cool & sunny. Temp 40 at 8 a.m.
            15 – Worked. Milly & Eldon brought melon seeds in. Planted 2 rows corn.
            16 – Planted nutmeg melons & set out melon plants & cucumbers. Milly & Eldon here for supper. Set out row of glads.
            17 – We went to Milly's for dinner. Stopped at Mary's going in. Cool but warmed to about 65. Bred Honey Bee second time.
            18 – Worked tonight.
            19 – Rained this morning, about ½ inch. Planted dozen phlox, 5 mums & sweet Williams.
            20 – Planted row of squash. Started raining. Rained about 1 inch. Got saddle today from Sears. Warm in 70's.
            21 – Warm, near 80. Worked tonight.
            22 – Planted 2 dozen dahlias.
            23 – Worked 'til noon. Wayne & boys came in p.m.
            24 – Had dinner here. Cut lawn first time, used Ball's mower. Planted small flower seeds in garden.
            25 – Got new Quietflite mower, but no good on hill.
            27 – Worked 'til 6 p.m. Weather ideal in 70's.
            28 – Exchanged mower for self-propelled. $134.50 - $15.00 = $119.50. Warmer, but cool & pleasant.
            29 – Mom went with Eldon's to Cemetery. Wayne's came in about 9 p.m., all but Diane.
            31 – Planted 2 rows corn, row of beans & peas.
           
June 1959
            1 – Got word that Flora passed away this a.m.
            2 – Worked today.
            3 – Left at 6:30, arrived at 11:30. Had lunch there, funeral at 2 p.m. 60 their kin. Left at 4 for home, arrived 9:15. Grand day.
            4 – Nice day. About 80.
            5 – Worked tonight.
            6 – Wayne's came in a.m. Whole family. Re-set 1½ tomatoes. Milly & Eldon up for supper. Ate outside.
            7 – Man trimmed ponie's hoofs 4 - $5.00 cost. Hoed in garden & sprinkled. Getting warm, about 89 in town.
            8 – Worked tonight. Hottest day of year, 94 in Elkhart. About 84 at Lake.
            9 – Still hot. Rained in night. Slow easy rain about 1 inch. Balls started staying at Lake.
            10 – Rained again today. Much needed.
            11 – Worked today til 8 p.m.
            12 – Getting cooler, nice week end predicted.
            13 – Hester, Marge & Mabel Peterson came up. Wayne's arrived about 3 p.m. just ahead of me. Cut grass.
            14 – Hung back gate. Frank helped. Planted 2 rows (4th planting) of corn & some Wonder beans. Had 1st mess of peas. Harbert's were up. Cool.
            15 – Cool in 70's around 50 at night. Cultivated melon patch.
            16 – Started riding with Vern. Hoed melons & tomatoes.
            17 – Painted fence & lower barn. Tola & Earl came to Mary's. Sold out all their Indiana properties.
            18 – Tola & Earl came to see Mom. Stayed for dinner. Stopped at Balls to see me. Had 3rd mess of peas.
            19 – Things growing good, but need rain.
            20 – Worked all day. Wayne's came up about 7:30 p.m. Tola & Earl left for Florida to live. Sold out in Claypool.
            21 – Bake & Nora stayed all night with us on way to Canada. Had mess of peas.
            22 – Sugar had a colt this morning. A filly, spotted. One week past due. Not too many signs ahead. Our first born. Bake & Nora left also. Wayne bought a new boat & motor. Sugar's time 341 days.
            23 – Diane 16 today. Filly named Candy. Doing fine, is real friskie. Wayne painting cottage. Rained in night, probably ½ inch. Worked tonight.
            24 – Wayne's still painting. Went to South Bend Rotary.
            26 – Worked tonight. Sold car to Perry.
            27 – Home early. Hottest day of year so far 92. Cooler at Lake. Milly & Eldon up for supper.
            28 – Planted 2 more rows corn in garden (GCB). Hot & humid about 93. Noticed heat in house more than usual. Wayne's left about 7 p.m.
            29 – Still warm, but temps dropped about 30º in an hour. Rained in night about 6 inches. Soaked away good. Planted 2 rows early corn in M patch. Bred Sugar, 1st time since foaling.
            30 – Worked today and night.

July 1959
            1 – Thunderstorm this morning rained .5 inch & another .1 later. Went to South Bend Rotary.
            2 – Worked tonight.
            3 – Took Major to Kennell. Left early for Hammond to go with Wayne's to Colorado.
            4 – Left Wayne's at 4:30, drove 570 miles to Shenandoah, Iowa. Camped all night.
            5 – Left about 5:30 drove to Rocky Mountain National Park, total 1191 miles. Donna's were there ahead of us by 4 hours, same miles exactly. We arrived at 8:30.
            6 – All Isenagles fine & happy to see us. Had a nice camp site. Fed 15 every meal.


7 – Kids went up Emerald Mountain. Went to see Bear Lake. Attended camp program every night.

            8 – Went up Trail Ridge Road & Grande Lake 100 mile trip. Beautiful sight. Was in snow.
            9 – Went to Estes Park. Rode on Tramway & went swimming in Estes Lake.
            10 – Broke camp this morning & left about 11:30. Donna's followed us to Greeley where we ate lunch together & said Goodbye. We drove 425 miles to Kearing, Nebraska.
            11 – Started about 5:45 & drove steady all day, arriving at Wayne's about 11:30 p.m. 735 miles or 1150 total. Had a good night's rest.
            12 – We left Wayne's at 10 a.m., arrived home at 12 p.m. They followed by 2 hours. Bake & Nora were here. George & Doris came up.
            13 – Back to work. Sold car first thing. Wayne's are on last week vacation. They had ½ inch rain when we were gone. Picked up Major.
            14 – Ponies were all right while we were gone. Came home with Vern.
            15 – Rode with Vern. Went swimming at 9:30. Hot in town.
            16 – Vern came home early.
            17 – Vern stayed in. Tired out.
            18 – Rained .3 inch a.m. & .3 inch p.m. Elkhart had a lot more. Milly & Eldon up & Collet's came. Cooler. Had first sweet corn. 2 inches rain in Elkhart.
            19 – Rained today .25 inch. Collet's left for up North. Wayne's went home. We went to Mary's in evening.
            20 – Had to work. Smitty on vacation.
            21 – Tried Sugar back, no go. Balls here for supper. Had beans & corn from garden.
            22 – Eva had hair set with Mrs. Ball. Got hair cut.
            23 – Rained in night & off & on during day, total 1.1 inch. Nice rain. Worked today & night.
            24 – Was on duty on Sidewalk days until 9 p.m.
            25 – Wayne's came, except Dave, this p.m. Mary & Jack over.
            26 – Loafed all day. Wayne's went home about 8 p.m. Mary & Jack over. Eggleston cut door in barn.
            27 – Wayne locked up at Standard Oil strike. Moved crane in to dig garage site.
            28 – Had ½ inch rain today. Worked tonight. Moved Mt. Ash tree.
            29 – Had a big rain storm, over 1 inch rain. Eva saw South Pacific with Genevieve.
            31 – Getting ripe tomatoes. Lots of corn & cucumbers.
           
August 1959
            1 – Harbert's brought Nancy & kids up. Wayne still shut up at Standard. We had mess of beans & sweet corn.
            2 – Home all day. A beautiful week end. Pleasant & cool.
            3 – Wayne came up this evening.
            4 – Wayne & Nancy went home. Dave & James stayed. Finished digging for garage site.
            5 – Rained about ½ inch. Saw man about hay.
            6 – Leveled off garage site with bulldozer. Rained another ½ inch.
            7 – Diane came to South Bend on South Shore. Man gelded 2 ponies $14.00, Jim Mallo brought 125 bales of hay in small rain, $31.75 total cost about 3 tons.
            8 – Nancy came up this morning. Marie called on phone about Troy.
            9 – Cut weeds & got sick & threw up. Went to Mary's, but couldn't eat. We went to see Marie at Painter Lake. Troy is suing for kids.
            10 – Rotary Assembly & Governor Visit. Nancy & kids went home.
            11 – No news.
            12 – Got sick at work & threw up several times. Smitty brought me home about 4 p.m. Feel weak & lousy.
            13 – Didn't feel like going in today. Warm & sunny. Need rain.
            14 – Laid slab for garage today. Wayne got out of Standard Oil & came up this evening.
            15 – Went to Yacht Club dinner with Balls. Wayne's went too.
            16 – Ate here today. Had storm at noon, about .4 inch. Wayne's left. Had Kentucky Wonder beans.
            17 – Brought blocks & mortar for garage. Marie came today.
            18 – Eva & Marie visited around Lake.
            19 – Took Marie to Doris's & had supper there. Warm & humid, 90º.
            20 – Still warm & humid in 90's. Got 500 letter heads.

            21 – Wayne's came this evening. Hot & humid. Cooler at Lake.
            22 – Mary & Jack over.
            23 – Wayne's went home. Had a nice week end, warm. Lake temp 83º.
            24 – Marie got to take kids back to Florida. Men laid all blocks today on garage.
            27 – No rain yet, very dry. Hot & humid, over 90 every day. Cool at night.
            28 – I bought Sky Hawk ('56) at $1050, 21,700 miles from Valley Pontiac. Still warm.
            29 – Collet's came to visit Wayne's. Bill Milne & family stopped by.
            30 – Heat wave ended with 11 consecutive days over 90. Bob Brindles were up. Lake temp 84º.
            31 – Real nice day in 80's. Nancy & kids stayed this week.

Maybe I was the one taking the picture (I think I was the only one who wasn't fond of the ponies). Laura was only 3 at the time or she would have been in the photo as well, I'm certain.

September 1959
            1 – Still cool in 80's.
            2 – Worked for Mark.
            3 – Rode home with Vern.
            4 – Wayne's came up tonight about 6:30. Got 2 bushels corn $2.15.
            5 – Worked today 'til 4 p.m. Getting warmer.
            6 – Hot in high 80's. Milly & Eldon were up. Whitesells went home. Kids got 1st in Parade. School Daze. [boat parade]
            7 – Labor Day. Temp 89º. Water 79º. Hottest Labor Day in years. Everyone leaving for home. Real dry. No rain in weeks.
            8 – Still hot, over 90 º.
            9 – Last day of over 90 º. Was 95 in Chicago, a record. Rained .1 inch. Hardly wet ground. Took Eva out to dinner at Cass [their anniversary].
            10 – Temp dropped over 20 º.
            11 – Clear & cool about 72, low in 40's. Eva got permanent & drove to see Mary.
            12 – We went to Milly's for supper. They have nice kitchen. Wayne's here when we got home. Miss Mead of Mississippi crowned Miss America.
            13 – Kids went home. Cedric got out, kids caught him on highway.
            14 – Got Hawk license transferred $32.00. Tax paid.
            15 – Poured all concrete in garage & stable, about 12½ yards.
            16 – Beautiful weather, but no rain. 30 days today since it rained.
            17 – Went to Gary to close house deal, netted over $14,000. Cash deal. Paid commission $1125.00.
            18 – Worked tonight. Paid off all mortgages & other debts. Put roof on garage.
            19 – Kids came this morning. We started shoveling dirt around garage. Went to see Margaret & Toots.
            20 – George's birthday, 85. Kids went home before noon. Finished filling in garage. Went swimming, water 68, temp 82. Beautiful day. Went to see Mary & Jack.
            21 – Finally got our rain .8", soaked in good. Put tar on garage roof & other finishing. Wrote letter to Lou & Russell.
            22 – Finished stable & garage all but railing, etc.
            23 – Had .2" rain. Warm.
            24 – Had 1" rain, making 2 inches so far this week. Grass greening up. Worked tonight.
            25 – Sold first car this month, '59 Plymouth wagon to Kline Matthew.
            26 – Starting slow easy rain in night. Looks like a day of it. Total rain 1.4". Wayne's out, went to Centerville Fair.
            27 – Beautiful day in 80's. Painted garage doors. Wayne's left about 5. Milly & Eldon out.
            28 – Worked today. Sold car. Stormed again. Rained .7 inch.
            29 – Dodgers won play off. Pennant against Braves.

October 1959
            1 – World Series started. Sox won 11-0.
            2 – Second game won by Dodgers 403. Worked tonight.
            3 – Mom & I painted garage railing.
            4 – Cut weeds all morning. Went to Milly's for supper. Saw game. Dodgers won 3-1. Rained.
            5 – Still raining some. Dodgers won 5-4.
            6 – Rain over 2.4" for the 3rd day. Worked tonight.
            7 – Went to Ft. Wayne to a DeSoto-Plymouth meeting. Still warm, in 90's.
            8 – Temp dropping.
            9 – Temp. down to 45 in night.
            10 – Worked today. Sowed grass seed 25# Brome, in rain.
            11 – Got paper, fixed fence & stayed home. Windy & cool.
            12 – Rained .7 inch.
            13 – Mabel & Mary came home with me for one night. Mom had good supper.
            14 – Girls went to bus this morning. DeSoto & Plymouth Preview today & tomorrow. Worked 'til 8:30.
            15 – Worked 'til 9:00. Getting warmer.
            16 – Official Show day. Worked 'til 9:30. Had very good reception. Warm, about 73º.
            17 – Worked 'til 3:00. Wayne's arrived here about 4 p.m.
            18 – Dick Messner cleaned & fixed furnace $10.50. New filter & nozzle. Regulator was bad. Painted some. Wayne's closed cottage & left about 4 p.m. Balls stopped to see us. Took in boats & pier.
            19 – Mom got 2 bushels yellow delicious apples $1.00.
            20 – Sold first '60 car, DeSoto.
            21 – Temp. still mild.
            22 – My day to work.
            23 – Raining, in 60's.
            24 – Fixed south fence.
            25 – Got 19 bushels corn on trailer at Campbells $19.00. Ate lunch at Union, run by Lynne's from Valpo. Stayed home all day.
            26 – Brother Alex came with Ev & Jack at 8 a.m. I changed days. Raining. Had good visit.
            27 – Alex left today about 2 p.m. Clearing.
            28 – Getting colder. Went to 31 º in night. Froze ice in water tank. First time.
            29 – Leaves are beautiful, but falling fast.
            30 – Worked tonight.
            31 – Worked in a.m. & around home in p.m. Went to see hay man. Watched football. Rained again.
           
November 1959
            1 – Wayne's came in about 11 a.m. Here for dinner. Left about 4 p.m.
            2 – Vern not too good. We took him home.
            3 – Election Day. Vern stayed home.
            4 – Vern still home.
            6 – Had first snow storm, off & on all day, but it mostly melted.
            7 – Worked all day.
            8 – Chas. & Minnie came up & shared our dinner with us. Nice day.
            9 – Isenagle's on way to California. Should arrive on Wednesday.
            11 – Turned ponies loose in barn.
            12 – Snowed all day, mostly stuck between 2 & 3 inches. Roads slick. Mrs. Hazel Harvey hurt.
            13 – Rained, turning to snow. A lot of yesterday's snow melted.
            14 – Watched football games. Sat around house.
            15 – Went to Jones for paper & to Milly's this evening. Roads clear.
            16 – Cold in 20's. Went to Dr. my blood pressure was up to 238, highest of record. Got medication.
            17 – Temp dropped in night to 10 above. Coldest since 1891. Kept ponies in 1st time.
            18 - 10 º above again, but warmed during day to around 30.
            19 – My day on Floor. Temp about 30 this morning, to go over 40.
            20 – Getting warmer.
            21 – Worked around house & place.
            22 – Got about 120 bales of hay from Mallo, $35.00. Eldon & Milly came to give me a hand. Real nice day.
            23 – Went back to Dr. Blood pressure down to 192. Got thyroid pills too.
            25 – Had a little snow, enough to make roads slick.
            26 – Thanksgiving. We were going to Wayne's, but threatening weather kept us. Went to Milly's instead. Turned out nice day.
            28 – Worked 'til noon. Temp. in 30's.
            29 – Temp. around 30 all day. Snow flurries. Stayed home. Painted garage doors yesterday evening. Tied ponies in first time.
            30 – 20 above & clear. Went to Dr. Blood pressure down to 180. Got thyroid tablets.
           
December 1959
            1 – Getting warmer.
            2 – Temp in 50's.
            3 – Temp still over 50.
            4 – Another day over 50. Sold 2 geldings $175.00 for both.
            5 – About 1½ inches snow. Worked. Man got ponies in rain.
            6 – Snow flurries all day, but didn't stick much. Not too cold. Stayed home.
            8 – Sunny & warm in 40's.
            9 – Still over 40.
            10 – Sunny & warm.
            11 – Rained all day. Cooler.
            12 – Eva's birthday. Eva had hair set. We went with Milly & Eldon to eat out at Tony's in Elkhart.
            13 – Got 2 loads wood from Frank $7.50. Stayed home & wrote about 50 cards.
            14 – Rotary. Took Mr. Weise to South Bend.
            15 – Went to Penney's in South Bend.
            16 – 54 today, record since 1877. Foggy. Picked up basket fruit from Marie at Cass. No charge.
            17 – Worked today. Nice weather in 50's.
            18 – Temp in 40's.
            19 – Rang bells for Salvation Army 2 hours at Elkhart. Kind of cold.
            20 – Colder in 20's. Went to Milly's for dinner. Snowed in p.m.
            23 – Snowed about 3 inches in night. Looks like White Christmas. Eva got a permanent & went shopping.
            24 – Had Christmas Party at Ball's. Got $50.00 bond. Snow nearly gone. Took Major to kennells.
            25 – Got up at 5:15 left about 6 for Hammond. Ate on Toll Road & arrived at Wayne's about 8:30. Milly's & Harbert's there for dinner. We stayed all night.
            26 – Left Wayne's about 11:15 a.m. Picked up Major & groceries & ate lunch at Union. Arrived home about 3 p.m. Temp in 50's. Snow all melted.
            27 – Real warm day, about 55. Home all day. Weaned Candy (6 months).
            28 – Still warm.
            30 – Snowing again.
            31 – Stayed home. Roads O.K.
