1962

January 1962
            1 – Warming, low about 18 went over 30º. Home all day. Bright & clear. Watched Parade Bowl games. Neterers kids slid on south hill.
            2 – Temp 20-35.
            3 – Temp went over 40, thawed a lot of snow. Took Otto to Dr. at Constantine.
            4 – 32º 42º Thawing.
            5 – Heavy fog all day. Went shopping. Light rain, melting 32º 42º again. Temp falling at night.
            6 – Raining & freezing. Temp around 30º. Turned to snow at night.
            7 – Still cold throughout Midwest. Temp 14-24º. Home all day.
            8 – Snowing off & on. Temp 14-20º. Dropping by evening. Snow about 6 inches.
            9 – Zero at 7 a.m. high 8º above. Clear. Coldest day of Winter. Dropping to 6º below at 7 p.m.
            10 – Clear. Temp hit 10º below in night. Lowest in 16 years. Up to 5 above during day. Coldest since we been here.
            11 – 8 below at 7 a.m. Up to 8 above. Clear & sunshine. Trees still loaded with ice. Went to Jones. 2 above at 7 p.m.
            12 - 8º above at 7 a.m. up to 20º by p.m. Partly cloudy. Went shopping.
            13 – Warming. 20º in a.m., up to about 34 high. Still clear. Ice melted off trees, after a week. Lux gave me $70.00 to look after his mail & place.
            14 – Low 28, high 33º. Went to Milly's to pick up oranges. Started snowing in p.m. Left early for home. Snow slushy.
            15 – Still snowing, temp around 30-32 all day, snow stopped & temp falling, 22 at 7 p.m. Lux didn't leave today. Snowed about 3 inches.
            16 – Lux's left this morning. 4 above rising to 15º. Dropping to 2 above at 7 p.m. Clear.
            17 – Low 8 above, 18 high. Dropping to 6 above at 7 p.m. Took Otto to Dr. Clear.
            18 – About 1 above at 8 a.m., up to 18º. 7 p.m. 8 above & falling. Clear.    
            19 – Snowing & 5 above at 7 a.m., high 15º above. Holding around 10 above at 7 p.m.
            20 – Low 10 above, high 24º. Clear. Cleaned barn. Weaned Pixie.
            21 - 20º at 7 a.m., rose to 30º all day. Cloudy. Home all day.

            23 – 10 above, up to 18, dropping again at night. Ran out of oil today. They brought out 15 gallons.

            26 – Couldn't make hill today. Raining & ice under. Low 30, high 35º. Cloudy.
            27 – About 10 above a.m. up to 22º. Clear, cold & lots of ice.
            28 – Frank & I went to Union for paper. Still icy. Clear. Had Mais in for dinner. Low 15 in a.m. up to 24. Dropping again.
            29 – One inch snow fell in night. Temp low 22, high 42º. Clear.
            30 – Temp dropped in night to 15º. Was around that all day. Down to 10º at 7 p.m. & dropping. Clear, windy all day.
            31 - 2º above at 8 a.m. High about 15º. Went to Elkhart shopping. Some snow. 3 days zero or below in January.
           
February 1962
            1 – 8 above at 8 a.m. up to 15º high. Clear & nice. Snowed again last night. About 6 inches on ground.
            2 – 5 above at 8 a.m., high 24º. Partly cloudy. Some snow.
            3 – Low 28º at 8 a.m., high 42. Foggy.
            4 – Record heat, high 51, low 42. Thawed lots of snow & ice. Went to Milly's for dinner.
            5 – Temp fell to 22 in night, dropped to 16º in day. Several snow flurries in blizzard-like proportions. Colder.
            6 – 67 years old today. In good health. Had to get drivers license in blizzard. Really bad driving. Had dinner at Mais. Temp 8 above low, high 15º.
            7 – 2 below this morning. Clear. High 22º in p.m. P.C. & some snow.
            8 – 6 above at 7 a.m., up to 42 at barn, 32 at house. Clear. Went to Jones.
            9 – Went to Elkhart. Got car greased, oil change & heater fixed. Temp 20º high 28º. Some snow. Ate at Union.
            10 – Low 4 below at 7 a.m., high 25º. Clear.
            11 - 10º at 7 a.m., high25º. Cloudy. Home all day.
            12 – Low 22º, high 42-32. Clear. Some thawing.
            13 – Temp 25 low, 42 high. Clear. Eva had dinner for Mildred today, with Mais.
            14 – Temp 28, high near 40º. Clear. Some thawing.

            19 – Temp raised to 30º by 8 a.m., high only about 32º, dropping to 22 by 7 p.m. Snowing most of day with sleet.
            20 – John Glenn 1st man in Orbit 3 times around earth 4:56:26 seconds. Low today 20, high 38. Clear.
            21 – Low about 20º at 8 a.m., high 32º. Snowed hard all day, 3 or 4 inches.
            22 – Low 18º, high 32º. Dropping. Clear. Went to Jones. No mail.
            23 – Low 5 above at 7 a.m., high 25º. P.C. Went shopping. Ate at Union. Snowing & blowing tonight. Dave & Annetta had 9 lb. 11 oz. girl. Dana Lynn. [Baby info probably added after receiving announcement in the mail.]
            24 – Biggest snow of year fell last night with 2 & 3-ft. drifts. Clear today. Low 12º, high 28º.
            25 – Low 18 at 8 a.m. 43º high, 52º at barn. Clear & thawing.
            26 – Low 30º, high 43. Some thawing. Cloudy & temp dropping. Got word we are Great Grand Parents. Hurrah.
            27 – Coffee – Low 27º at 8, high 33º. Clear. Thawed slightly.
            28 – Low 15º, high 27º. Some snow & wind. Typical winter day. Dropping.
           
March 1962
            1 – Coldest March 1st in years, except 1960. Zero at 7:30 a.m. High about 15º. Clear & bright.
            2 – Low zero at 7 a.m., high 22º. Clear. About 30 at barn. Went shopping. Still a lot of snow & ice.
            3 – 8 above at 7 a.m., high 30º. Clear. Thawed some. Elkhart won Regionals, beat South Bend Central 66-62.
            4 – Cloudy. Low 14º at 8 a.m., high 32º. Home alone.
            5 – Low 14º at 7:30, high 28º. About 1½ inch new snow fell in night. Had T.V. switch put on & new tube $12.23.
            6 – Low 18º, high 34º. Cloudy.
            7 – Low 24º, high 38º, 42 at barn. Sunshine & thawing.
            8 – Low 26º, high 42. P.C. Had Misc. checked on car at Jones 50¢. Washed car outside. Had rectifier put in T.V. $9.24.
            9 – Low 30º, high 38º. Cloudy. Went shopping & to Dr. Weight 163, blood pressure 160/90. Some thawing. Lake still froze over.
            10 – Low 32º, high 42. Cloudy. Thawed a lot. Elkhart beat Ft. Wayne Central 61-58. Kokomo beat Huntington. Lost to Kokomo 73-70.            H.B.
            11 – Low 32º, high 42. P.C. Home all day. Still thawing. Wind has been in ENE for over a week. Had electrical storm at 10 p.m. with rain, 1st rain since December.
            12 – Low 30º, high 38. P.C. & snowing. Eggleston installed bathtub today. Now we can take a bath.     HB
            13 – Low 30º, high 35º. Cloudy & snowing. About 1 inch fell last night. Wind finally shifted to SW after 10 days of ENE.
            14 – Low 25º, high 32º. Snow in a.m.
            15 – Low 22º, high 33º. Clear. Car wouldn't start. Called Vandalia for jump battery. Went to Cass. Had points installed $5.60, tow 5.00. Wayne called.
            16 – Low 22º, high 33º. Cloudy. Went shopping. Sold 70 shares BL & 10 B.G. Total $235. Saw Turtle Doves.
            17 – Low 20, high 40º. Clear. Thawed. Dave & Annetta came with new Great Granddaughter, a real cutie. Left at 8 p.m. Evansville beat Madison, East Chicago beat Kokomo, Evansville beat East Chicago 74-71.
            18 – Went to Milly's. Low 18º, high 44º. Melted a lot. Snow off lake. Clear & warm. First 2 robins came today.
            19 – Low 33º, high 43º. Some rain. Took car to Elkhart, had broken wire in distributor. Put in, set plugs at 14,000 miles.
            20 – Low 25º, high 45º. P.C. & foggy. Thawed a lot more.        HB
            21 – Low 30º, high 43º. P.C. Some rain & snow, but all melted. Got Hormones at Vets.
            22 – Low 32º, high 42º. P.C. Went to Jones. Got bran & lice killer. Hauled 11 loads of manure out of barn.
            23 – Low 32, high 45º. P.C. Went shopping. Snow about gone. First time this winter.
            24 – Sunny, 30º 48º high. Lux came home at 1:30. Snow nearly gone.
            25 – Low 32º, high 52º. Sunny & thawing fast. Milly's here for dinner.
            26 – Low 25º at 7 a.m., high over 50º. Snow practically gone except low places. Hauled manure. Fixed T.V. short. Eggleston finished tub, $233.24.
            27 – Low 30º, high 55. Clear 4th day. Snow gone. Hauled manure.
            28 – Low 38º, high 65º, 68 at barn. Warmest day of year. Clear. Went to Bristol for wheat germ oil. Cut down dead elm on hill.
            29 – Low 50º, high 75º. Clear, windy & warm. Picked load of corn. Finished manuring big garden. Lake breaking up. Rained .3 inch. First real rain of Spring. Wayne called at noon.
            30 – Temp dropped to 30º by 6 a.m., only went to 42º today. Clear & windy. Went shopping.
            31 – Low25, high 42. Clear & windy. Kids came up at 11:30, left at 6 p.m. Wayne couldn't get pump primed. Diane along.
           
April 1962
            1 – Low 26º, high 42º. Clear. Windy. Home all day. John Ball raked leaves.
            2 – Low 22º at 6 a.m., high 42º. Clear & windy. Hauled manure & picked load of corn.
            3 – Low 20º, high 48º, barn 52. Clear. Windy. Picked load of corn. Sold Pinto to Lyle Manning for $50.00. Delivered him. Lake nearly all broke up.
            4 – Low 30º, high 50º. PC & rainy. Lake all but open. A month late from 1961. Went to Mishawaka. Picked up toaster & ate with Milly's.
            5 – Low 34º, high 48º. Raining. Went to Jones.
            6 – Low 34º, high 55º. Clear. Went to town. Got blood pressure medicine. Went to Mais for pancakes.

            8 – Low 36º, high near 60º. Clear. Went with Milly's to Dick Peterson wedding at Mentone. Saw Aunt Maud & Jake & Agnes.
            9 – Low 32, high 49º. Windy & clear. Uncle Chilly buried at Ardmore, Oklahoma.
            10 – Low 34º, high 50º. Clear. Washed car.
            11 – Low 30º, high 55º. Clear. Picked up trailer license. Planted tomato seeds.
            12 – Low 30º, high 56º, 60 at barn. Planted sweet peas. Rain this evening.
            13 – Woke up to white ground cover. Flurries all day. Gone by p.m. Low 30º, high 38º.
            14 – Low 28º at 6 a.m., high 40º. Clear & windy.
            15 – Low 26º, high 42º. Clear. Went to Nancy Feldman's wedding at Bourbon. Windy.
            16 – Low 24º, high 40º. Very windy. Planted tomato, cabbage & flower seeds in hot bed.
            17 – Low 28º, high 54º. Clear. Moved some hay. Started tractor & raked leaves.
            18 – Low 32º, high 55º. Clear.
            19 – Low 34º, high 42º. Very windy. Clear.
            20 – Low 25º, high 58º. Clear & calm. Plowed strip of garden. Fixed Wayne's pump.
            21 – Low 35º, high 72º. Sprinkled some. Tilled garden strip & planted row of peas & onions. Wayne's came, left at 8:30. Milly's came late.
            22 – Easter Sunday. Temp stayed at 58º in night. Highest of year. Today's high 72º. Bake & Nora came at 11 am., brought a lot of stuff. We enjoyed their visit.
            23 – Clear & windy. High 55º.
            24 – Low 40º, high 72º. Clear & calm.
            25 – Low 52º. Highest low of spring. High 83º, record high for date. Plowed west side of garden. Got worm medicine.
            26 – Low 58º, high 84º. Clear. Plowed in garden square.
            27 – Low 57º, high 83º. Clear. Went shopping. Planted row of carrots, radishes, beets, bibb & head lettuce.
            28 – Low 60, high 80º. Plowed some. Rained about .2 inch in evening. Good for seeds & pasture. Lake temp 42º.
            29 – Low 60º, high in low 70s. Ate dinner at Wayne's. Changed to summer underwear.
            30 – Finished plowing & tilled enough to plant 1st 2 rows of corn Iochief. Big wind storm 75 miles per hour to hit at 3:30. Blew down trees, power off. Rained over 1 inch.
           
May 1962
            1 – Went to Cass Tax Sale. Lot 134 paid up. Nancy & Catherine came out to lunch. Rained. Cool in 50s.
            2 – Low 40º, high 43º. Cool & raining.
            3 – Low 50, high 72º. Clear. Had mess of new rhubarb.
            4 – Low 52º, high 80. Clear. Tilled flower garden & hoed.
            5 – Warm 80º. Dave, Annetta & Wayne's came. I planted 14 hills midget melons & row of beans, Tendergreen. Everything greening fast. Seems to be ahead of last year. Wrens came.
            6 – Cool all day in 60s. Clear, windy. Wayne's left early, took Snipe home. 1st peas coming up. Onions growing.
            7 - 40º low, high 60. Helped Frank cut 5 loads of wood at Harveys. Worked 6 hours. Rained .2 inch.
            8 – Planted 10 dahlias & 56 glads. Frank & I cut up dead elm in pasture. Cool 42 - 62º.
            9 – Cool in 50s. Frank fixed points & cleaned carburetor in mower. Cut half the lawn, 1st time.
            10 – Rained .4 inch last night. Still cool. Mid 50s. Finished cutting grass.
            11 – Went shopping. Temp 48 - 60º.
            12 – Rained .4 inch this a.m. Wayne's came at 1 p.m. Cleared & went up to 70º. Julie Ebeling [Weaver] here.
            13 – Mothers Day. Milly's came. We all ate at Nancy's. Warm 80º. Put pier in & Wayne stained top.
            14 – Low 65º, high 88º. Clear. Planted 2nd row peas, 2nd 2 rows corn Golden Rush. Also planted small flower seeds. Sprayed trees 2nd time.
            15 – Low 66º, high 89º. Clear & hot. Went to Cass. Tilled some garden.
            16 – Low 68º, high 88º. Clear. Replanted musk melons. Planted 2 rows sunflower & acorn squash. Also 2 rows potatoes (Maine) & set out 6 Fireball early tomatoes. Lake temp. 58º.
            17 – Got hair cut. Hot 60 - 89º, 94 at Chicago. 1st row of melons up fine.
            18 – Went shopping alone. Got drapes. Low 60, high 90. Cooler at night. Lake temp 65º.
            19 – Low 64, high 88. Clear. Planted 2nd row potatoes. Cut grass 2nd time. Went swimming 1st time, 3 weeks earlier than last year. Water temp 61º. Kids didn't come up.
            20 – Sugar foaled a male colt about 5 a.m. Found her at 7. Lively & cute. About 2 weeks past due. Beautiful day about 75º. Nice breeze.
            21 – Low 54º, high 75º. Clear. Re-planted 1st 2 rows corn. Golden Cross. Planted 2nd row of melons. Finished grass. 2nd corn planting several inches high.
            22 – Helped Frank cut up tree off Bryan's fence. Ate lunch there. Was cool in 70s, clear.
            23 – Low 60s, high in 70s. Clear & windy. Planted last row of onions, radishes, beets, lettuce. Paul Mullins died today.
            24 – Cool near 70. Sunny. Watched Scott Carpenter complete 3 orbits. Went to see Paul Mullins.
            25 – Cool day. Went shopping. Big winds.
            26 – Had thunder storm in night & 1 inch rain with .3 more falling. First rain since May 10th. Getting dry. Wayne's came at 1:30. I went to Mullins services.
            27 – Cool 60 & raining off & on. Wayne's left at 4 p.m.
            28 – Low 54, high 73º. Cloudy. Planted 60 tomato plants. Some cabbage, broccoli & head lettuce. Also glads.
            29 – Went to Nappanee to see Chas. Baker receive his 50-year Masonic pin. Warm.
            30 – Had rain .2 inch this a.m. Helped tomato plants. Went to Milly's for lunch & supper. Real nice day - 82º.
            31 – Shower in night. Fairly cool, .1 inch.
           
June 1962
            1 – Cool in high 60s. Tilled rest of garden. Cut ¾ lawn, 3rd time. Went to Scholma's Farewell Pot Luck. Set out petunias & 6 peppers. Sprayed trees.
            2 – Finished cutting lawn. Planted 2 rows 3rd corn planting & 2nd row beans. Wayne's came about 12:30. Diane too. Cool. Wayne painted his boat. Called on Frank Nelson.
            3 – Cool in 60s. Sunshine.
            4 – Cloudy, but cleared. Temp rose to 78º. Cultivated & hoed flowers & garden. Rained in evening & night .7 inch.
            5 – Cloudy & clearing. Replanted some corn. Temp about 72º.
            6 – Went to auction at Shipshewanna. Re-planted 1st row corn, set out cabbage. Temp in 70s.
            7 – Clear. About 72º. Otto painting window sash.
            8 – Went shopping. Otto finished windows. Cultivated garden.
            9 – Rained ½ inch in night & 2 ½ inches this p.m. Wayne's & I went to Auction at Shipshewanna. We brought home sulky & harness, $85.00.
            10 – Rained another ½ inch in a.m. Hitched Candy to cart. She ran away with Wayne. Set out Walter's tomatoes. Warm, near 80º.
            11 – Planted 2 rows 4th planting of Golden Cross corn, and replanted 10 hills cucumbers. Temp in 70s.
            12 – Picked 2 boxes berries. Drove ponies in harness, warm.
            13 – Uncle Earl died today in Florida. Picked 88 quarts of strawberries, earned $5.50 & a free box. Pretty stiff tonight. Cool.
            14 – Went to Jones. Drove ponies.
            15 – Went shopping. Hoed around potatoes & melons. Temp 78, 50 in a.m.
            16 – Cultivated whole patch. Drove ponies. Picked 2 boxes of berries, 25¢. Wayne's came for 2 weeks. Went swimming.
            17 – Nice day. Milly's here, Fathers Day. All ate at Nancy's. Had grilled chops.
            18 – Real warm, about 86 here. Rain threatened. Went to Cass with Wayne. Planted 5th 2 rows of Iochief corn.
            19 – Cool in 60s. Went to Wawasee to look for snipes.
            20 – Manning delivered 122 bales hay in lieu of Pinto sale. Temp. 70 out, but 100 in mow. Picked 4 quarts berries. Drove ponies. Clear, no rain.
            21 – Temp near 80. Built a trellis for tomatoes.
            22 – James went shopping with us. Warm. Cedric got out west corner. James & I put up electric fence.
            23 – Diane 19 today. Dave & Annetta came. Harbert's too. We had barbecued spare ribs & 1st mess of peas. Picked 8 quarts of strawberries. Wayne sold his Snipe $250. Rain .3 inch.
            24 – Cool in 70s. Clear. Wayne sailed with Linda [Ebeling].
            25 – Cultivated garden. Went with Wayne to Battle Creek to see a Snipe. No deal. Warm in 80s. Went to Mais for Frank's Birthday. Gave him tobacco.
            26 – Put straw on tomatoes. Warm.
            27 – About 78º. Wayne got new Snipe $1250.
            28 – Drove ponies. Temp around 80º. Picked 5 boxes strawberries.
            29 – Went shopping. Hot, around 80º.
            30 – No rain yet. Diane came on South Shore at 2:40. Sailed with Wayne. Went to Milly's for cook out. Turned cool.
           
July 1962
            1 – Beautiful day. Good wind. Wayne won 2nd & 1st in Snipe race. First time. New boat O.K. He & Diane went home. Had 2nd mess of peas & 1st beans. Sprinkled garden.
            2 – Got first rain since June 10th except for .3 on June 23rd. Drizzling rain all day total 2 inches. Soaked in good. Cooler.
            3 – Wet & cloudy. Picked 3 quarts black raspberries - $1.20. Set out 55 rose hedge.
            4 – Wayne's came at 9 a.m. Dave & Annetta's folks at 10. Wayne came in 3rd. Won 2nd in Regatta. Cool & P.C. in 70s.
            5 – Fairly warm.

            6 – Laura's birthday. Went shopping. In 70s. Wayne came late.

Birch Lake birthday celebrations were the best.

            7 – Warm, high 85º, low 68. No wind. Noticed the heat at night. Cool before morning.
            8 – Wayne won 2nd & a 1st. Was last away & 1st at finish. They all left tonight.
            9 – Penny had a filly colt last night. Spotted, 331 days. Windy & cool in 60s. Lucy & Bev's families came to Wayne's cottage. We ate with them at night. Fried chicken.
            10 – Real nice, near 80. Went swimming. National League won All Star 3-1 from American. Aunt Minnie died today. [Minnie Baker, Charlie Baker's 2nd wife. His 1st wife was Lester's sister & Bake's & Marge Rae's mother.]
            11 – Kids left today. Real nice. In 80s.
            12 – Got haircut & set. Went to South Bend. Got Midas Muffler $15.95 & tail pipe. Also rear shocks $20.80. 16,000 miles. Ate with Milly's & stopped to see Mary & Jack.
            13 – Went to Knox. Minnie's funeral. Mabel there, also Marj. Mabel came home with us. Tola came with Wayne's from Hammond. Rained .5 inch.
            14 – Wayne entered Regatta at Eagle Lake. Won 8th & 5th. Rained. Had pot luck at Mary's.
            15 – Wayne came in 4th & 5th place for Regatta. All ate at Mary's again. Tola stayed. Rained .2 inch.
            16 – Dave & Annetta here on vacation. Cut lawn. They ate with us.
            17 – Put Mabel on Dowagiac Bus at 11:15. Went to see Alex & Jim. Sunshine & warm. Uncle Clyde's came with Donnie.
            18 – All went to Milly's for barbecue chicken. Picked 1st tomatoes & cukes.
            19 – Painted south end of barn. Need more paint.
            20 – Went shopping alone. Dave cut tank. Rained nearly 2 inches. Washed out. Cool, in 70s. Bought gallon Penta Prime.
            21 - .3 inch rain in night. Clear today. Drove Candy & Cedric today. Cool & nice.
            22 – Good wind in p.m. Wayne's & Dave won 4th & 1st. Tola came with Mary & Jack & went home with Wayne. Milly & Eldon came in evening. More rain, .3 inch. Sold Friskie to Pam Foote.

            23 – PC & clearing. Cleaned basement. Went to see Mrs. Martin with Neterers.
            24 – Had dry well repaired with new hole & gravel, $65.00. All water removed. Painted basement floor. Cool in 70s.
            25 – Still cool. Patched veranda. Had good mess of 2nd beans, first real corn also tomatoes.
            26 – Painted steps. Cleaned garage. Drove ponies. Dave fixed barn lights. Mom got $10.00 perm. Cool & clear.
            27 – Went shopping. Cleaned up rest of basement. Still cool. Wayne came.
            28 – Painted deck & rest of basement. Drove all 3 ponies including Penny. Having lots of corn.
            29 – No races this a.m., no wind. Wayne came in 1st in p.m. with Mary crewing. They all left tonight. Warmer 78º.
            30 – Russell's leaving Denver for Indiana. Cool. High 78, low 60.
            31 – Low 59, high 74.
           
August 1962
            1 – Russell's arrived at 6 p.m. They are fine. Cool today. Lost my glasses in fence row.
            2 – Went swimming. Drove ponies. Warmer.
            3 – Went shopping. Russell's went to Clyde's. Wayne's came at 8:30. Warm. Ordered new glasses.
            4 – Real warm today. Russell's came back. Dave & Annetta came. Temps dropped 10 degrees with wind change.

            7 – Had fish fry with Dean's. Cool.
            8 – Warmer, in 80s. Went with Lou & Russell to Aunt Maud's, cemetery, Bass Lake, Knox & Doris. About 215 miles. Ate supper at Azar's.
            9 – Got haircut & all ate barbecue steak here.
            10 – Went shopping. Got new glasses $33.00. All went to Milly's for cook-out. Russell's stayed. Cool.
            11 – Drove & rode ponies all a.m. Dave, Annetta, Diane & John came up. Ate with Dean's in evening at Wayne's.
            12 – Russell's came, also Milly's. Had ham & chicken. Good wind. Wayne & David came in 2nd & in p.m. Wayne & Diane won 1st.
            13 – Russell's went to Doris'. We washed. Still cool.
            14 – Low 55, a cool day. Had first fire in fireplace. High 66.
            15 – Russell's came back at noon. We went to Cass & Diamond Lake. Cool & warm, about 70.
            16 – Russell's left at 9:30 for Straits. Sold Smoky for $75.00 to R. Breece. Warmer, near 80º - 60 at night.
            17 – Went shopping. Went to Mary's & Clyde's. Saw Connie. Ate at Mary's. Wayne's here when we got home. Still cool, in 50s at night.
            18 – Cool. Drove ponies.
            19 – Wayne & Dave won 1st & 2nd today. We got 2nd in Boat Parade, Pa's Off His Rocker. Collet's came to Douglas cottage. Nice day in 80s, 91 in Chicago.
            20 – Warm today in high 80s. 93 in South Bend.
            21 – Warmer today, in 80s. Cool at night.
            22 – High 82, low 60. Clear. Need rain.
            23 – High 86 & high humidity. In 90s in town. Started on 3rd planting of corn. Tomatoes coming on fast now.
            24 – Went shopping. High near 90. Wayne's came late. Diane & Dave's too.
            25 – Vern Ball passed away at 1 p.m. Cooler, rained slowly all day about ½ inch.
            26 – Wayne came in 4th with Diane & 1st with Mary. Cool & clear. Had some of 3rd corn.
            27 – Nice day in 70s. Went to Funeral Home. Standing line for blocks. Paved hill.
            28 – Lank & I went to Vern's Funeral at Church. Temp about 80. Cool nights. Balls came out.
            29 – Warm in 80s. Cool nights.
            30 – Paris dug Martin's dry well. Still warm.
            31 – Went shopping alone. Got car side swiped south of Union. Damage over $300. Had ½ inch rain tonight & thunder storm.
           
September 1962
            1 – Wayne's came in time to race. They came in 3rd. Nice day. Big dinner at Yacht Club. Wayne won trophy, 2nd for Fourth of July, Dad's Day 1st & 2nd for Boat Parade. Nancy stayed home.
            2 – Wayne & Dave got another 3rd. Wayne called home at noon. David & Dave P. came in 1st after Traeger broke down. Got 1st place trophy for Labor Day. Beautiful day in 70s.
            3 – Wayne's had baby girl 8 lb. 3 oz. at 7:20 a.m. Doing fine. Labor Day. Temp 76º. Name Amy.
            4 – Went to get car estimate $419.80, got O.K. to leave car at Balls. Drove a '54 Plymouth.
            5 – Temp 48 this a.m., high 80. Canned 8 quarts tomato juice.
            6 – Low 40º, high 65º. Furnace came on awhile. Warmed up. Clear. Got hair cut, also repaired transistor $9.76. Canned 6 quarts juice.
            7 – Went to Dr. Blood pressure same. Weight 159 pounds. Car approved for repairs.
            8 – Barn pump burned out. Called Haines & Carter. Dean's & Mabel came at noon to stay at Wayne's. Miss Ohio won Miss America.
            9 – Wayne, David & 3 kids came. We all ate with Dean. All left at night. Rained in night & most of day, total for 24 hrs. 1 inch.
            10 – Low 60, high 70. Clear.
            11 – Low 59, high 70º. Clear. Cut Frank's corn.
            12 – Low 55º, high 82º. Clear. Got barn power motor rewired $43.88.
            13 – Low 55, high 80. Clear. Canned 13 quarts juice.
            14 – Cooler 65, high 75º. Clear. Went shopping. Car to Part shop. Sowed grass seed.
            15 – Still cool. Julie & Doug dropped in this evening.
            16 – Weatherly won 1st race from Gretel by 3 minutes 46 seconds [America's Cup sailboat race]. Wayne & kids came up. Weaver's all ate with us outdoors. We had corn & tomatoes. Wayne & Dave came in 1st & 2nd in races.
            17 – Went to pick up car. Eva bought 2 dresses, hat, 3 hose, girdle & bra also a lay away black coat. Clear, high 66, low about 56º.
            18 – Low 50, high 72º. Clear.
            19 –Low 48, high 60. Clear. Went to dump.
            20 – Temp 35, 32 at barn. High 62º. Went to Fair, horse races & show. Cool. Heat came on 1st time.
            21 – Low 32 here, 30º at barn. First light frost. Froze ice on tank. Didn't seem to hurt things much. Rained .2 inch in evening.
            22 – Low 49º, high 70º. Clear. Wayne's came about 4 with new baby. Everyone fine.
            23 – Milly & Eldon up. Ate here. Nice day in 60s. Had sweet corn, about the last.
            24 – Low 45, high 65. Clear. Hauled dirt for yard. Rained .2 inch.
            25 – Low 59, high 62. Clear. Weatherly won 4-1 over Gretel. Liston knocked out Patterson in 1st round. Planted grass.
            26 – Low 40, high 62. Clear.
            27 – Low 45, high 64º. Clear. Picked Northern Spy apples – over 1 bushel. Ate last sweet corn.
            28 – Went shopping. Temp 42º. High 64º. Clear.
            29 – High 60s, low 40º. Clear.
            30 – Kids came at 12:30. Ate lunch in evening. Positively ate last 3 ears of corn. National League ended in tie. Nice day.

October 1962
            1 – Giants won 8-0. Temp normal.
            2 -  Fixed fence. Had ½ inch rain in night. Dodgers won 8-7 at L.A.
            3 – Low 55, high 64º. Giants won Pennant 6-4 in 9th. Play Yanks tomorrow.
            4 – Yanks won 4-3. Low 45 - 66º.
            5 – Giants won 2-0. Stanford shut out Yanks. Low 50º, high 68º. Rained ½ inch.
            6 – Got 36 – 6xd [No idea, but he sells something similar in November – maybe stock shares?]. Low 55, high 72º. Clear. Wayne's came at 1:30. Fixed electric fence.
            7 – Put away all boats, pier, table, etc. Kids left at 5:30. We had about .2 inch rain in night. Warm.
            8 – Cloudy. Temp 50 – 70.
            9 – F.E. Stolte came on South Shore, stayed all night. Temp. over 70º.
            10 – Took F.E. to South Shore in p.m. Stopped at Mary's & Milly's for supper. Temp. over 80º, 86 in Chicago a record. Yanks won 5-3, Terry.
            11 – Real warm low 64º, high 83º. Clear.
            12 – Temp. 60-72º. Clear. Game rained out.
            13 – Went to ILR Party at Smidts. Took Mais to South Bend & left Mom at Wayne's. Real warm, hottest night of summer. Clear.
            14 – Went to old Church. Saw old friends. Temp in 80s. Got home about 7 p.m. 115 miles both ways.
            15 – Still warm. Low 65, high near 80. Rained in evening .3 inch. Giants won 6th game 5-3. Pierce & Ford. They were rained out 3 days.
            16 – Yanks won 7th 1-0, Terry-Stanford. Temp cooler 70º.
            17 – Temp 50-65.
            18 – Cool 49-65º.
            19 – Shopped. 60-72º. No killing frost yet.
            20 – Rained nearly all day about .75 inch. Temp 60-72. Don fixed T.V. $8.16, line in center.
            21 – Cooler 40-62º. Foggy in morning & clearing. John & Ada Ingram came up. Was here for dinner. We enjoyed their visit. They left about 5 p.m.
            22 – Raining. Temp dropping in 50s. President spoke on Cuban Crisis. Looks bad.
            23 – Still raining & first snow flurries. About .75 inch. Left stable open 1st time. Ponies stayed in.
            24 – About 2 inches wet snow. Power off 6 hours in night & 2 this morning. Couldn't go to town. Temp. 30 low, 38 high. First real freeze.
            25 – Snow started again about 7 a.m. & came down hard. Canceled trip to town. Temp below 30 low. Heaviest snow this date, between 15 & 18 inches. Beautiful with colored leaves.
            26 – Too much snow. Didn't go to town. Temp 25-38. Thawed a lot. Helped Manning drive hogs. Feeding ponies some hay & grain twice daily.
            27 – Went shopping. Roads dry. Got new tire. Wayne's came at noon & shut off water. Left early. Temp 30 low, high in 50s. Most of snow disappeared.
            28 – Remained 45 in night, near 60 today. All snow gone. Almost as fast as it came.
            29 – Went to dump. Clear. Temp in 40's.
            30 – Helped Manning with hogs. Raked more leaves.
            31 – Had trailer tire changed. Helped Frank cut up sumac & we cut up all mine. Nice day about 50º. Had 25 kids in [for Halloween].

November 1962
            1 – Got haircut & set. Frank & I cut up sumac for kindling. About 50º.
            2 – Low 35, high 50. Went shopping. Took Mais to bus. Put tube in T.V. $10.81.
            3 – Mild temp. Home all day. Dean's came in p.m. to see Stantons. Left about 6.
            4 – Went to Milly's for dinner. Started to rain & snow at 4, so came home. Temp in 30s.
            5 – Frank & I cut Budzinski's trees. About 40º. Got oil changed. LDO [long distance oil], 18,500 miles. Oil & air filter installed.
            6 – Election Day, a lot of upsets. Romney won in Michigan. Nixon lost California. A.W. Clarks came, stayed all night. Temp in 40s. Clear.
            7 – Clarks left about 9:30. Had a good visit. Mild temp, about 50 high.
            8 – Went to Balls, got job finished & had points put in. Got groceries. Temp 44.
            9 – Cool wind. About 40 all day. Got 15 or 18 bushels corn from Manning. Value $15.00.
            10 – Fair, in 40s, high 48º. Milly & Eldon dropped in for supper. Been feeding ponies since snow storm.
            11 – Temp 40 & 48º. Clear. Home all day alone. Bears beat Vikings 31-30. Put on long underwear.
            12 – Low 30º, high 50. Sold 3 Vc6 today [Stock shares?].
            13 - 40º, 54º high, 56 in Elkhart. Went with Lux to Liberty Homes.
            14 – Nice Day. 31 low, high 56º. Split wood & raked leaves.
            15 – Went to Jones. Temp 35-52. Washed car.
            16 – Rained most all day, slow. Went shopping. Temp in 40s.
            17 – Low 32, high 40. Home all day. Watched Purdue lose to Minnesota 7-6.
            18 – Low 30, high 35. Chilly & cloudy. Home all day.
            19 – Low 26º, high 35º. P.C. Split wood & raked a few leaves.
            20 – Low 31, high 38º. P.C. Cleaned gutters, dug bulbs.
            21 – Temp went to 52º. Nice day.
            22 – Thanksgiving. Left 8:30 a.m., arrived at Wayne's at 10:20, 108 miles. Clear. About 41º. Had dinner at Harbert's, stayed all night at Wayne's.
            23 – Had car checked at Biekers, visited Burkes, Mrs. Doolin, Stephens & Mrs. Doolin. Arrived home about 6 p.m. via South Bend. Temp in 40s. Frank fed the ponies.
            24 – Nice day, in 40s.
            25 – Went to Milly's for roast chicken dinner. Out to see Bill's ponies. Nice day, in 40s.
            26 – Beautiful Day, near 50º. Mom washed, but feels punk. Helped Frank cut two trees at Cox. 22 low, 1st real freeze.
            27 – Cut 4 trees. Low 22, high 50. Had Cisco for supper. Started to wean Friskie, 6 months 1 week. Dark of moon.
            28 – Low 30, high 56º. Beautiful clear weather. Finished trees at Cox.
            29 – Low 30, high 54º. Cut trees at Mais. All ate supper there. Grazing mares in Foote's garden.
            30 – Went shopping. Low 30, high in 50s, 56º. Warmest November in years, 66º Chicago.
           
December 1962
            1 – December started with low 28, high 60º. Beautiful weather, like March. Changed filters in furnace & oiled motors. Navy beat Army.
            2 – Low 28, high near 60º. Clear. Ponies still on some pasture.
            3 – Low 30, high 58. Good weather still prevails. Put screen over corn.
            4 – Temp 28º-56º. P.C. Picked up 15 bushels oats at Manning's. Value $9.00. Nancy had surgery today.
            5 – Our good weather ended with a high of 35 & light snow fell. Let ponies stay in, 1st time.
            6 – Snowing most of day. Temp around 30º. Ponies hung around barn all day. Got out a lot of cards.
            7 – About 5 or 6 inches of snow. Hill rough. Didn't go shopping. Temp stayed around 30.
            8 – Low 18º, high 30º. Snowing off & on all day. Got bacon at Lanks.
            9 – Low 18º, high 25º. More snow, about 8 inches fell in night. Stray cat came.
            10 – Temp 15º, high near 30º. About 12 inches of snow on ground. No plows out, no mail man for 1st time. No schools.
            11 – 10 above in a.m., high 20 & dropped to 7 above by evening. Plows & mail came. Total snow about 15 inches. South Bend had 26 inches. Freezing in Florida.
            12 – 5 below at 5 a.m., 3 at 8, & zero at 9. High of 18º today. Went to Elkhart with Neterers. Got banking & groceries. To Neterers for Eva's birthday dinner. Lowest temp since January '62.
            13 – Temp. low 10º, high 20º. Snowing, 3 inches. Went to Jones & H.D. with Frank. Hills bad. Snow now 18 inches deep.
            14 – Lux's left today for Florida. Low 18º. High in 30s, about 38º, 45 at barn. Dropping again tonight. Lake froze over some & broke up.
            15 – Low 20º, high 32º. Raising. Got 163 gallons oil. Full tank. Used 275 to date.
            16 – Low 25º, high 34º. Cloudy. Took car out first time since Dec. 4th. Got papers.
            17 – Low 20º, high 38º. Bright & sunny. Thawing, now about 12 inches.
            18 – Low 30º, high 40º. Sun came out. Snow going fast. Down to about 6 inches.
            19 – Low 28º, high 35º. Cloudy. Went to Cass. Shopping. Saw man about snow tires.
            20 – Low 20º, high 25º. Colder. P.C. Mailed last of Christmas cards.
            21 – Low 18º, high 24º. P.C. Light out at 8 a.m. Went shopping. Bought snow tires $30.00.
            22 – Low 23º, high 28º. Flurries at night. Light out at 8:07. Cloudy. Sunrise 8:16. Set 5:20. Winter begins, shortest day. Milly & Eldon here.
            23 – Snowed flurries most all day. About 1½ inches. Colder, lake freezing.
            24 – Clear & about 4 above, up to 13º by 11 a.m. Went to Mishawaka & to Hammond with them. Arrived at about 3. Stayed with Harbert's.

            25 – At Wayne's for dinner. Left at 3. Got home by 6. Last 10 miles rough, heavy snow. Went off road at Lanks corner. Made it OK & home safe. Frank fed ponies. Temp about 24º.
            26 – Low 10º, high 15, clear. Temp dropping by evening.
            27 – Temp zero at 6 a.m. High near 30º. Went to Jones. Sunny all day.
            28 – Low 10º, high 30º, clear. Went shopping. Dr. appt. blood pressure 160/90. Weight 161, up 2 pounds.
            29 – Temp 30º at 8 a.m., dropped to 24 by 3 p.m. Clear, windy & cold.
            30 – Low 10º, high 15º. Clear. Home all day. Green Bay won championship over Giants. Temp dropping fast.
            31 – 3 below at 8 a.m., went up to 20º. Took Otto to Cass. 5 above at 9:30 p.m. Coldest winter so far in years.
